Talk Like A Scotsman/St Andrews Day/Burns nicht
YoungWillz replied to scsibear's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Tezza May's Burns celebration didn't go too well. Only invited Tory donors, snubbed SNP and Scottish Labour MPs, spelt the names wrong of a few of her own new Scottish Conservative MPs on the guest list, served (ugh) crispy haggis as a starter (which Mundell actually had the temerity to address) and celebrated Burns as part of the great British Union to which we belong. And Burns was anti-Union. What a dismal, dismal display. -
Retired British Army Major General Henry Dalzell-Payne has died aged 88. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thetimes-uk/obituary.aspx?n=harry-dalzell-payne-cbe&pid=187959714 One of those bodies in charge of Northern Ireland, particularly at the time of Bloody Sunday. He gave evidence to the Saville Inquiry denying that the Army were ordered to shoot "illegal marchers": http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/2331217.stm Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Dalzell-Payne

Whilst I cannot say I'm familiar with his work, I'm well aware of him. He was the kind of guy who popped up on things to be a bit of a "bad boy", but seems to have "fallen" out of favour by the media when more commercially successful bad boys like Shaun Ryder came along. I didn't listen to John Peel, though plenty of my uni pals as it transpired shunned the charts in favour of his kind of stuff. Notwithstanding, I really have no intention of listening to The Fall - ever. 60 is no age to go though, and I am truly saddened by his decline and death.

Leslie Phillips duly saved. Never right, never....
-
Is there a day goes by the Reaper isn't hitting this Pool? You really should be aiming for people who die later than the fall...not members of The Fall. Two teams whack some minor points on...
-
RIP. Honestly can't say I was a fan at all. I know nothing of his oeuvre.

Wow. the hits keep coming. Ursula K Le Guin, author, a unique for....Book. How apt. Points AGAIN!

Following on from last year's effort, here are the list of Best Film Oscar Nominees: Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer star in a romantic coming of age movie that ends in genocide in Cull Me By Your Name. Gary Oldman re-imagines World War II in which Owen Wilson becomes British PM in Dorkest Hour. Christopher Nolan directs the epic story of the evacuation of a local Church Bake Sale in Bun Kirk. Daniel Kaluuya and Alison Williams star in the racially charged story of a dispute over a bad tennis call in Let, Out. Greta Gerwig directs Saoirse Ronan as a woman who is not all she appears to be in Laddy Bird. In his farewell role, Daniel Day-Lewis hears the heavy footfall of ghosts in Phantom Tread. When journalists are forced to become catwalk models, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep try to outdo each other in The Pose. Frances McDormand draws the attention of a small town to the joys of forks with three prongs instead of four in Threek Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Sally Hawkins tries her hand at deadpooling when she discovers how unwell Chekhov from Star Trek is in The Shape Of Walter.

Oscar Noms about to be announced - get your bums over to BBC News Channel if you are interested...

For me, he's a contender for most significant death of January 2018. What surprises me is that more folk didn't pick him...been ill for years, addictions before that and this last re-occurrence just smacked of the end for me. Once again, RIP.

Oh, Joey, Masekela took a turn for the worse all right....
-
@Joey Russ Hugh Masekela has died before the start so my first sub comes on to the team. As I had Masekela as a Joker, I'd like to replace him with Dilip Kumar. Hope this is ok.
-
Looks to be my first hit of 2018, my Joker: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42786749. Very sad, excellent musician and part of the anti-apartheid movement. RIP.
