Beth Whittall, a Canadian swimmer who competed at the 1956 Olympics (7th in the 100m butterfly) and who will be posthumously inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame as a sporting legend in June, has died at age 78. http://www.brandonsun.com/sports/breaking-news/former-olympic-swimmer-and-pan-am-games-champ-elizabeth-whittall-dies-at-age-78-302250671.html?thx=y

Sadly yes. "African-American" has for some time been the go-to PC euphemism for non-white people, at least among the sheeple. I've definitely heard black British people referred to in this way. Speaking of which, why do we never hear of "English-Americans"? Every other nationality seems to be represented, they have Italian-American, Irish-American, you name it. Surely some English people emigrated to the USA at some time? Anglo-Americans? WASPs? *shrug*

Phantom called it over at Dead Pop Stars when we were discussing Sledge and Ben E King's songs being used in Levis commercials. Sad news if it is, probably one of the hardest working men in showbusiness.

Political Discussions And Ranting Thread

How is the voting system there? Is it that the victor takes the seat if they get most votes or is it a proportional system with votes transferred up from losers until someone has 50% or what? Also, if you have hot politicians, does everyone stand round them on cold days? -

No point, nae cunt left.... Wilz, you could start one...... 'Or'..... I would be hugely surprised that there was not one, at least, already. Ha ha, right off the bat I could name about 50 soul singers, musicians, producers etc. I appreciate the Forum might not want things to get too fractured, and if the mods confirm there doesn't appear to be a Soul thread, happy to start one. Edit: should have mentioned there is also a rock/metal thread too.

Time to institute a Soul Thread? I've seen country, folk, blues, jazz and pop.

Count me in. I am of the opinion that there will be another General Election sooner rather than later. And if that doesn't resolve matters, we are looking at PR and parties being forced to work together.

No it will be tomorrow and I will claim my prize of a smug prediction of slightly late.

I know you won't believe this but I was doing an update to when I noticed you had replied! Thanks gcreptile, some hot possibilities if they survive the year I think.

If death comes in threes, than which other 60s soul legend is going to die soon? How is Al Green doing? (Apparently, fine.) Or Sly Stone? Otis Williams, Little Richard and Smokey Robinson all seem ok too...but you never know. Or it could just be Nick Kamen from another Levis commercial.

I'd like to add that Labour have hardly ever had to rely on Scottish seats to win an election with a majority. And I'd like to think that some of our friends across the islands would like Labour to have a little more gumption and distinctiveness to their campaign, rather than looking like the substitutes for the current incumbents without really changing very much. On the performances tonight, Miliband will not be PM on what he says, the Lib Dems are irrelevant as they can't do a deal with a Tory red line Europe referendum or with Labour who have ruled out deals. Which kind of leaves what I've always believed but dare not - Conservative and UKIP governance on a minority basis with occasional support from DUP. Which will inevitably lead to a constitutional crisis and political reform - it's 1815 -1832 all over again.

British composer Ronald Senator and his wife, pianist Miriam Brickman, killed in a house fire in Yonkers. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/04/30/fatal-yonkers-fire-ronald-senator-miriam-brickman/ Edit: Yes, it's another Ron, though unpicked I understand. -
Signing off soon to watch the Question Time Special (The Three Amigos and Vow Smashers) and then Ask Nicola straight after. I have a feeling there will be a big name death announced during that time, seems to be when I'm away. Three Amigos should be fun. Watching professional politicians who've never done a hard day's slog in their life look longingly into the camera for your vote while all the time thinking of their seat, salary and possible expenses claims and how to cosy up to their respective vested interests. They speak with forked tongue, it'll be like watching the science fiction series V again. Laters Listers. YW.

"I will do it until they put me in a box or I can't do it anymore." This is exactly the kind of statement that ends up being prophetic. So I'll submit 83yo boxing promoter Bob Arum. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-3062243/Boxing-promoter-Bob-Arum-going-strong-83.html
