    Thoughts On The 2017 List

If we got the forum users to write the list instead of the committee.

Wish I'd included him on my own personal list now! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38827688 Thought of him, didn't put him on my list, and then he died. That's how it goes sometimes!

Also, can someone explain to me what Drop 40 is? Don't care if I come across as a newbie. I'm a casual death lister...

Biggest Misses By The Committee 2017

It wasn't his health that dissuaded them I suspect but more the sense that he wasn`t famous enough.I mean only the mirror have reported his death so far of the main stream media..the only arguable misses so far are Soares Armstrong-Jones Hollingworth Sarstedt Pomsel and Hurt. Currently fifth most read story on BBC News: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38812944 Definitely famous enough, no problems there.

The Italians absolutely loved prog rock in the seventies, and produced a handful of great acts of their own like PFM and Area.

Daily Mail link http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4176842/Asia-singer-John-Wetton-died-aged-67.html Right, I've got other things to do so won't be back on here tonight. If you find any other obits for Wetton, please be posting them here. Thanks! EDIT: Just been checking Google News. Plenty of sites around the world reporting his death, but the UK media has been rather slow. I suspect there will be more reports of his death in the UK media tomorrow if they don't appear tonight.

Sometimes the mainstream media can be pretty slow. I suspect that there will be BBC and Guardian obits for Wetton at the very least, although they may not surface until tomorrow. Both of those news outlets recently reported the death of Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, a figure significantly more obscure than Wetton. Would not at all surprise me if Chris Evans plays "Heat of the Moment" on tomorrow's Radio 2 breakfast show.

    Close To The End

Thanks people. But first of all - rest in peace John Wetton. Not only a great musician who was an important figure in progressive rock during his years with King Crimson and many other bands in the seventies and who later found huge success with Asia in the eighties, but also an inspiring individual in beating alcoholism and battling cancer bravely. I first learned of Wetton's illness around summer 2015, after having listened to a radio broadcast featuring him. Initially he was saying that he'd survived cancer, but then it emerged that the cancer had returned and spread around autumn 2015. From then on after, and especially after the sepsis and the wedding and the photos after that, I knew that he was a goner. He chose to remain optimistic, saying that he was going to be appearing at a festival and going on tour in 2017, but it wasn't even remotely realistic. And then earlier this month he said he was withdrawing from the festival and tour, and then he stopped tweeting, and that was basically it. And, I think I'm justified in saying, shame on you, Deathlist Committee. There was plenty of discussion about Wetton on this forum, yet the committee chose to ignore everything that was said and exclude him from the list. Oh well - when all is said and done, a hit for my list if not for the Deathlist!

    The 2Nd Death Of 2017

I have never, ever gotten one of these polls right ever. Never ever. Going with Peter Sallis.

    Sir John Hurt

That much I can agree with.

    Sir John Hurt

2017 is eyeing the bar set by 2016. Apart from John Hurt and Mary Tyler Moore, who else have we had this year? Jaki Liebezeit? And a few obvious picks who were old and frail anyway (Soares, Hollingworth type deaths). I read an article which said that there was no "curse of 2016" - it's simply a fact that celebrities are ageing and the number of famous people known to the general public mushroomed starting from the 1960s onwards, in large part due to the increased popularity of television. That group of celebrities are the ones who now are dying off in large numbers. To take the music world alone, there were many high profile deaths in the years leading up to 2016, for example Lou Reed in 2013, Jack Bruce in 2014, and so on. There was just a "statistical spike" in 2016.

Jaki Liebezeit (possibly German for "love time", appropriate for a highly skilled drummer) of influential krautrock group Can, dies aged 78: http://pitchfork.com/news/71067-can-drummer-jaki-liebezeit-dead-at-78/ I didn't realise there was going to be a partial reunion of Can this year - but apparently maybe not now! Sad stuff... http://pitchfork.com/news/69749-can-members-reunite-for-50-year-anniversary-show/ So out of the "core four" of Can, with Karoli and Liebezeit gone, only Czukay and Schmidt remain! And Schmidt was quite a fat guy who was always seen smoking cigarettes in his younger days and he's nearly 80 now so he's done well to hang on for as long as he has... Liebezeit, Czukay and Schmidt were a good bit older than typical 1970s musicians, though. And Damo Suzuki was ill a while ago, from what I'd heard. Malcolm Mooney seems to be doing alright by the sounds of things.

    Dead Drummers

Shitty bollocks! Those teams who picked Holger Czukay have chosen the wrong member of Can! RIP: One of the greatest drummers of all time - a human drum machine! Who picked Holger Czukay? Is he ill like? And yes, beaten to it. Agree with those who say one of the best drummers of all time - but still basically an unknown figure amongst the general public who are not committed music fans. Doubt we will see a BBC obit for Liebezeit - just too obscure for them. Maybe in the Guardian... And while we're on the topic of Can, does anyone else think Czukay is basically a doppelganger for the late David Allen of Gong fame? Two very similar looking musicians there. And born in the same year as well. And both with a proclivity for making some crazy psychedelic sounding shit.

That's Trump in now and Bush senior not dead yet. Is that a record number of living Presidents?

    George Bush Senior

Yeah, big respect to him for fucking up Trumps inauguration if he goes in the next couple of days ! I am sick of all the hate for Trump to be honest. Give him a chance and see what happens. Yeah, I know a lot of people will hate me for saying this but I don't care.

    George Bush Senior

Heard about this on the radio - sounds like it could be the end for him. Nice timing! If he died on Friday, that'd really be great timing... but then again didn't Obama's grandmother die the night before he was elected or something?

Biggest Misses By The Committee 2017

Well, to be honest I didnt really expect an OBIT for Zhou Youguang and thats how I didnt consider him in my personnel DL. Maybe thats the same reason why the comittee did never consider him? It`s bloody difficult, like a bet you have to place, cause you never know before if People like Zhou Youguang are really obitable. Depends what you want to consider as an obit, really, doesn't it? I personally think any mention of the person's death by any UK news source - local or national - is sufficient. There are probably people on my list that wouldn't UK obit but that's a risk I'm willing to take. Doubtless though, most of them would (over 90 percent).

    Life In Prison

Well, well. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/soham-child-killer-ian-huntley-9627494 Soham child killer Ian Huntley 'wants a sex change so he can move to women's prison', ex-inmate claims As if we needed any, more proof that the whole "transgender" thing is a load of nonsense. There's no such thing as a sex change - apart from a few rare biological aberrations like intersex people and Klinefelter's syndrome, people are either born male or female - XY or XX. I'm not an expert on biology or genetics but I know that these are in the chromosomes of every cell in the human body. But apparently, what people feel they are is more important in the world today than what they actually are. And "gender" is a grammatical term.

Biggest Misses By The Committee 2017

Well, that's their decision, and a bad one at that. According to their own rules, "candidates cannot be famous solely for the fact they are likely to die in the near future". That would NOT exclude people like Zhou Youguang from being eligible for the list - it would only exclude people like Emma Morano who have no other claim to fame than age.

Biggest Misses By The Committee 2017

Zhou Youguang was an easy and obvious miss. Although maybe not particularly well known in the West, he was definitely an important enough figure in China who also happened to live past the age of 110. (People like Emma Morano would not qualify for Deathlist as the only thing that makes them famous is their highly advanced age). He also got a Daily Mail obit: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-4119592/Zhou-Youguang-father-Chinese-Romanization-dies.html

    The 100 Club

He lived to 111 years and 1 day - all the 1s! (Actually not really, because it was 111 years, 0 months and 1 day - should have waited another month to die!)

    Dead Pop Stars

Bronski Beat and The Communards were two different bands, right, both featuring Jimmy Somerville? Both the same kind of gay 80s pop? (and I use the word gay here in the "homosexual" sense rather than any other sense)

    Rolf Harris

I read somewhere recently he had his hands up the skirts of 12-year-old and 14-year-old girls in the 70s. Basically a serial predator like Saville.
