Roberto Anzolin, Italian goalie who played for Juventus and the national team, has died at 79. (link to a translation from the Italian)
-
Fair enough, but she's nearly 80 now - old enough that it wouldn't really be a complete shocker. (Also, relatively pointless, but if she'd won, I'm pretty sure she'd be the first winner who has written graphic novels, right?)
-
At this point I'm just wondering if she'll get it before she dies. Because if it's the high profile adaptation thing that prevented it from happening, she's out of luck next year as well - for some reason there's a second season of Handmaid's Tale coming out, and Alias Grace came out in Canada recently, and will be out world-over November.
-
Still annoyed Atwood didn't win last year. Or this year.
-
I should probably pick up something by him, sometime.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/05/nobel-peace-prize-2017-who-are-the-likely-nominees List of favourites for nominees/winners for the Peace Prize - I agree the White Helmets are probably the front runners (especially after the Netflix documentary was nominated for an Oscar, and all the drama with a couple of the participants being unable to come to the Oscars because of the travel ban), but I think both Francis and the ACLU are potentially entertaining candidates as well. Francis being the first Pope to win would be fun, especially after all the infighting that's supposedly (and likely) happening in the Church. Other winners already announced: Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss, and Barry Barish won for Physics, and Richard Henderson, Joachim Frank, and Jacques Dubochet took it home for Chemistry. Doesn't look like any are in danger of croaking this year or next, at the very least, though we all know that can change quickly.

Issue is also that under Nevada law, any mass murderer is labelled a terrorist, and yet no one if officially willing to call him that - cops specifically stated it wasn't terrorism, as a matter of fact.
-
I'm missing something too, and it's the 'have his babies' part of it. There's no attraction there, whatsoever, IMO.
-
To be fair about this point, there were like 3 guys with the same name that were being blamed, one of whom was a sex offender. So, I get why they'd get confused there. Other points spot on, though.
-
Well, he's united the world's leaders against him, so he's got that going for him (to be fair, so does Trump to a lesser extent)

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2017/oct/02/las-vegas-two-dead-in-mandalay-bay-casino-shooting-latest-updates Deaths up to 58, injuries to 500.

Watch them give it to some government that came to a ceasefire with some militant group again. (Over/under on Trump tweeting about Obama's Nobel when he doesn't win?)

As a lit major still doing my masters last year, that was a travesty and I don;t think we spoke about anything else for a week. One of my profs thought it was deserved, but no one ever liked them so no one cared. I hope Atwood wins it, tbh - her prose is great IMO, though some of her books are difficult to read more than once (still haven't been able to re-read Handmaid's Tale after I first read it, it's freaking horror from where I'm standing)

Ah makes sense - what I wanted to say was he was a longtime sportscaster, and also the announcer for the Stars at the time of his death (he returned for a couple of games when he could in 16-17, so I count him as active-ish), but I can see where that might have been confusing!

Stephen Paddock being reported as the killer is also apparently 60+
-
Injured up to 200+ as well now, so I still think we haven't seen the final casualty + fatality lists yet, unfortunately. Gunman identified on several news organisations as a Stephen Paddock, with rumours that he may have been a sex offender. Until the BBC/Reuters/someone else very reliable reports it, I'd still advise taking it with a grain of salt.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/marilyn-manson-cancels-nine-shows-after-nyc-stage-injury-w506461 9 shows cancelled, returning home to recuperate (not sure if he's already left the hospital). Currently scheduled to return to tour on Oct 15, but I guess that could change. No news on how severe the injuries are/were, but if he's returning on tour in 15 days, I guess they're not awful.

Active shooter in Vegas: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41466116 Update: Deaths up from 2 to 20, more than 100 injured so I'm guessing fatalities will rise. BBC updating on the above link only.

His arms still look nothing more than bones, though - my guess, either this year or next, unless something significant changes.
-
Yeah, I called him the Stars' announcer because that was the last team he was with before he left to deal with his cancer.

To be fair I'm always surprised when a cancer mum type obits, so maybe I underestimate how desperate some papers are for material. I do think he was picked in a couple other pools, though not the DDP.
