I'd be surprised if he obits, but even more unlikely people have managed to gain one, so maybe I'll be proven wrong. But yeah, pretty surprised - I think they were dedicating something to him during the first game of the season or some such thing, so I don't think this was expected by any means (given value of unexpected when talking about someone with cancer, of course).

Dave Strader, longtime sportscaster and play-by-play announcer for the Dallas Stars, has died aged 62. He won the 2017 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame for his contributions to play-by-play broadcasting of ice hockey.

Lorenz Funk, West German ice hockey player who won a bronze medal in 1976, has died of cancer aged 70.

Ludmila Belusova, two time pairs' figure skating gold medalist ('64, '68) with husband Oleg Protopovov, has died aged 81.

Zinke, Mnuchin and Pruitt all under fire re: use of taxpayer money for private jets/unnecessary trips/wtv as well, though at a different scale (Price was between 400k - 1mil depending on which trips were counted, the others are all under 100k according to what I read). Depending on how hard they're pushed about this, more resignations could be coming regarding this current scandal. If I had to bet on any of the three resigning, Mnuchin would top my list given the drama his wife caused on Instagram replying to a comment that criticised them spending taxpayer money for vacations or summat.

I remember him in the BBC Pride and Prejudice. RIP

Given Downie's apparently releasing a new solo album or something, I'd say while he's a cert to die soon, that's probably going to happen next year, not this. He could still surprise me, but I'm not nearly as sure about him as I was. That said, Bracknell and Michael are still certs, I agree, and there's a couple that aren't certs but wouldn't surprise me at all if they corked it - Mugabe, for one, and given everything that's been happening with the abdication (of which we admittedly haven't heard much for some time) Akihito wouldn't surprise me either. And I just personally find it difficult to believe that all the centenarians still left will make it to next year. So yeah, a lot of space for more hits this year.

Norman Dyhrenfurth, who led the first American expedition to scale Everest (but never managed to reach the summit himself) dead at 99.

Wouk once again. At least one more of the centenarians has to die, right? RIGHT?

Lady Veronica Bingham of Lucan, widow of vanished and declared dead Earl John Bingham of Lucan, was found dead in her home at age 80. Edit: Apparently there's a thread for Lord Lucan that I missed and this was posted these a couple hours back, but I think it also fits here, so not deleting it.
-
Holy hell I missed a bumper of a day, didn't I? How is Wouk not yet dead? I'm still on that train...

DDP pick too, I think Edit: BBC

Article talking about the hospitalisation says: "While the pontiff is insisting on being discharged, the medical team will make a decision on his discharge when they consider him medically fit to do so, added the statement" I suspect he won and not the doctors.

The Mars heiress looks like she's the most likely of the lot, both by age and that picture.

Interesting that there's been a lack of updates the last couple of days. Shakila, actress in 50s and 60s Bollywood films, dead at 82 of a heart attack.

I mean, at this point, I'm just going down with the Herman Wouk ship until the end of the year/him dying, whatever comes first, I guess.

Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Mudslides

Included in the deaths is at least 20 children who were killed after a school collapsed. -
Also when it was caught - early enough and she could be perfectly fine for a couple of years.
-
Anyone know what he was suffering from? The Google Translate said he was suffering from 'the disease,' but doesn't clarify what, and I don't read/understand Italian.

How are we even quantifying 'bigger year?' More DDP hits? More DL hits? If it's just big names, no - the music angle's already been mentioned, and in terms of film 2016 had both Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, one of whom was a main character in one of the biggest sci fi movies ever. Unless something drastic happens, nope.

Where Will The Next School Massacre Be?
CastAway replied to maryportfuncity's topic in DeathList Forum
Doesn't seem to be a better place to post this, so: 1 dead, 3 injured after shooting in a Rockford high school. Shooter was a student. -
Yup, the toll was updated. And on that point, there's a chance numbers related to the storm go up, at least in a round about way - HuffPost reports that Little Havana is still without electricity, and notes that there is concern that it could cause a situation like the one in the nursing home given the fact that a quarter of Little Havana's population is over 60. Hopefully light is restored soon, but I guess we'll see.

There's also a Nobel prize winner waiting for an obit, and I'm pretty sure there was one previously in the year who never got one. (NYT and WashPo have carried obits for both of them, but it obviously doesn't count)
