    Laughing At Funerals

Fits of laughter are not at all unusual at funerals, it's a stress response. Personally, I'm hiring a comedian to do my eulogy; leave 'em laughing, I always say.

National holiday here in the states today; Memorial Day. It's a day we honor those who have died in defense of the country, yet several people have wished me a "Happy Memorial Day." Always struck me as odd.

Our Oz guesty really should register, seriously the most worthwhile visitor in ages. I'll be back down for Sydney Hobart on Boxing day this year, perhaps we cold get drunk? Brisbane is a trek from there, though.

Yeah, but he was diagnosed in 2004.... Unless you cut and pasted this (and I can't be asked to check) I'm impressed. 98% of all statistics are wrong would have been sufficient.

I had dinner with her one night back in 1986 (as I recall), at the height of her popularity at the time, and the way she was so gracious to the interminable number of people who interrupted for an autograph was, eventually, awe inspiring. Her patience waned in her later years, I'm told, but my memories will always be of her class and dignity. RIP, Wendy, and thanks for the hit.

Knew this one was coming but wasn't happy about it. It's the price of this deadly game of ours that we maintain our sense of humor when it hurts.

    The Dead Of 2009

The mother of infamous Branch Davidian sect leader David Koresh has been stabbed to death, and Koresh's aunt was in custody Saturday. Bonnie Clark Halderman, 60, was found Friday afternoon at the home of her sister, Beverly Clark, in a rural area near Chandler, Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said. Chandler is about 175 miles north of Houston. "It's still under investigation, and we really don't know what the motive was or what caused this to happen," Nutt said Saturday. Authorities found a knife they believed was used in the slaying, he said. He said deputies were called to the home Friday and the two women were the only people in the house when deputies arrived. Clark, 54, was being held without bail pending a court appearance. Jail officials said she did not yet have an attorney to speak for her. Halderman wrote a 2007 autobiography, "Memories of the Branch Davidians: The Autobiography of David Koresh's Mother," that described how her son, Vernon Howell, became David Koresh, leader of the Branch Davidian cult. In 1993, agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tried to arrest Koresh for allegedly stockpiling weapons and explosives at the Branch Davidians' ranch compound outside Waco. The confrontation led to a 51-day standoff that ended when the complex caught fire and burned to the ground on April 19, 1993, killing Koresh and nearly 80 of his followers. About two dozen children were among the victims. The government claimed the Davidians committed suicide by setting the fire and shooting themselves. Survivors said the blaze was started by tear gas rounds fired into the compound. A 10-month independent investigation concluded in 2000 that Koresh was solely to blame.

    The Dead Of 2009

Dr. Richard Sharpe, the cross-dressing Gloucester dermatologist serving life in prison for killing his estranged wife, was found dead Monday night in his cell at the state prison in Norfolk, according to a spokeswoman for the Department of Correction. Sharpe was discovered hanging by a bed sheet by his cellmate at 7:26 p.m., said spokeswoman Diane Wiffin. "An emergency medical response was initiated," Wiffin said. "He was transported to Norwood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:11 p.m." The department's emergency response procedures were followed, Wiffin said. State Police attached to the Norfolk district attorney's office are investigating Sharpe's death as a matter of protocol, according to spokesman David Traub. The state medical examiner is expected to perform an autopsy today to determine a cause and manner of death. More information is expected to be released today, Traub said in a statement. Sharpe was sentenced in 2001 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his estranged wife, Karen, to keep her away from his $5 million in assets. The case drew national media attention when photographs of Sharpe wearing slinky dresses and fishnet stockings were widely published after his arrest. Sharpe was later accused of hiring a hitman from behind bars to kill Robert Weiner, the former Essex first assistant district attorney who sent him to prison. A Norfolk Superior Court jury acquitted Sharpe of those charges in 2007.

Currently (and temporarily) living in Nashville and I am officially sick of hearing about the Titans. It's incessant. As a Bears fan my season is over, now I just hope for good games and an NFC win in the Super Bowl. It was fun watching the Lions make history this year, almost as much fun as watching the Cowboys get their butts handed to them in their last game at the old stadium.

I think that's a hit for our very own OoO. Hard to say since the DDP board just shows white pages for the current game. @ OoO, I know it's a lot of work. Better you than moi, mon ami.
