Are you Jimmy Carter? -
Have you considered... 1. Obama served eight years, Trump only four? 2. Many people get their first grey hairs in their early thirties, with full on grey hair (or no hair at all) by their early fifties. Trump at 69 was already far beyond the age most people turn grey, so four years in office weren't likely to change that. 3. Trump hid his real hair colour and skin complection by dying his hair and usage of Oompa Loompa Skin Care™ products. 4. Your Dorian Gray comparison only seems to work on the "is scared to age and will do anything to make himself look better" front. I don't think Trump looked particularly healthy or youthful in office, and in recent pictures he does look like a normal, if not particularly grumpy, American man in his mid to late seventies. Besides his weight I don't see any imminent (natural) health risks for Trump, on average he looks better than Clinton and worse than Bush. On Biden, yes he his well beyond his prime and seems lost or forgetful more than many other people in their early eighties. But that's no death sentence at that age. Had he not been president but member of the local stamp collection club, people would probably say he was a typical eighty year old.

Most Surprising DeathList Celebrity Omission
ThereWillBeDeaths7 replied to The Daredevil's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
One that springs to mind is Sir Ian Holm: he had big roles in Alien, Chariots of Fire and the Lord of the Rings movies (I was a fan of his portrayal of Bilbo Baggins since I first saw him in the role) and visibly had a health decline over his last years. You can't put every famous English actor over 85 on DL but Holm just felt like someone who could have been on the list. -
2007, aged 89?
-
@The Daredevil is correct! Nelson Mandela debuted on the DL in 1989, one month after his 70th birthday.

Thanks, bit of an oversight by me. Kerkhoff served in the foreign legion during the war, which cost him his Dutch citizenship and he later wasn't a member of the Genootschap van Engelandvaarders. Might be an explanation why the organisation wouldn't be made aware of his passing, if it did happen. Johannes Roest I'd say is more likely to be alive given he would still be a youngster at 96, compared to most other Engelandvaarders. But something we have to remember is that not everyone makes it to 96 According to my research, about 15-16 Engelandvaarders passed away since the final yearly meeting of Engelandvaarders in 2018. Even if there are some names which have gone unnoticed until now, the total number of living Engelandvaarders would most likely not be higher than 3 or 4.

Quite surprising as Leo Hendrikx and Bernard Uiling were the two men sitting on the left; when this picture was posted I did not expect them to outlive all of the other male Engelandvaarders (perhaps Hendrikx (L) but certainly not Uiling). Very relatable to me, there are multiple Engelandvaarders which I would presume are dead but which I haven't been able to find an obit for. The only one we can be sort of sure about being alive is Ellis Brandon, I agree. Ellis Brandon (99) 8 april 1923 Below are Engelandvaarders which were probably alive in recent years so could be alive, but I'm not sure about it. If they died in recent years they probably lived in a nice cottage in Ruinerwold, given the lack of an obit: Johannes Roest (96?) 2 april 1927 Jack Kerkhoff (100?) 21 juli 1922 Mink Ferwerda (103?) 17 november 1919 And these ones I'm quite sure of are dead but as above, their obits must've been published in one of PM Rutte's text messages as they seem to have vanished off the earth: Jan Bastiaan (April 21, 1921) Jan Bernard Marinus "Bob" Haye (August 28, 1922) Ben Reynders (April 14, 1924) Sietse Rienksma (December 26, 1915) Hans van Zanten (1919)

I've got a new question for you: At what age did Nelson Mandela make his debut on the DL? With age on debut I mean his age at the start of his first year on the list.

An argument could be made for Dame Vera Lynn as well in my opinion. Her almost century long career and being seen as "Forces Sweetheart" during WW2: Songs like We'll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover which capture the time of the war. And the fact she was alive 75 years later was just so surprising and lovely.

Not even close to 4365 likes could be interpreted two ways and just to be realistic, I'll go with the reasonable number of 5678 likes

Well I wouldn't say so, unless you are an 86 year old Argentinian living in Vatican City and you love wearing white robes?
-
I can't remember if he was a hit when he died, I'd say he made his debut in 2009.

While we're at it with the statistics: For each living US President to reach Carter's age (which he will likely add some final weeks or months to): 98,5 years old on April 1, 2023 (Not bothering with exact number of days, just a casual estimation) Biden (1942): May 20, 2041 Trump (1946): December 14, 2044 Bush (1946): January 6, 2045 Clinton (1946): February 19, 2045 Obama (1961): February 4, 2060 While I could see a couple of them living to 90+, chances of any of them breaking the record are pretty small.

The Happy Birthday Thread

A very happy 91st birthday to my beloved grandmother -
Looks like he sadly has a bad case of All Caps Disease

Sadly even the more healthy looking nonagenarians eventually decline. Just look at Christophers Lee & Plummer, who were multiple years younger than Attenborough is now when they died quite suddenly, or Dick van Dyke who, although it looks like he'll recuperate from his car crash, could just as easily have sustained injuries far worse. Most people don't live to such a high age and those who do mostly don't age as well as Sir David has up to this point. While I do agree his voice sounds weaker than before and it is sad to see him decline, he is almost 97 and still doing the work he loves which in my opinion is a great way of living your retirement. If he survives the year (which is an if at this point, he is 97 after all) I'd say he is a must for the DL24.

LOL at this part

Former footballer and coach Kees Rijvers (96) has been honoured by the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association). During his senior career he played for the likes of NAC Breda, Saint-Etiénne (Fr), Feyenoord; and was a member of the Dutch national team between 1946 and 1960. As a coach, he managed the Dutch national team from 1981-1984 during which the likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman and Wim Kieft made their debut. Here he is pictured receiving the bondsridderschap of the KNVB. He will turn 97 in May.
-
As long as he doesn't pass away at the end of April. I've just bought two tickets to go see Obama in the Ziggo Dome on the 1st of May and a state funeral on that day might just be a hindrance to the whole event

In which case, thanks Elon! Hoping his next tweet is about Putin's 71st birthday

That's really sad news to read. New him mainly from the John Wick movies where he was great in the role of Charon. -
Update about George Kooymans: He can eat, drink, read and watch tv. Has difficulty walking and picking things up. And he can't play guitar anymore. In his own words "he's not doing well, but it's still do-able". He gave this interview promoting the upcoming album of supergroup De Vreemde Kostgangers, with members Henny Vrienten (1948-2022), Kooymans (1948) and Boudewijn de Groot (1944). Some of the musicians who contributed to the album were Thé Lau (1952-2015) and Jan Rot (1957-2022). Quite a high death toll, and sooner rather than later the oldest one will be the last on left.
