Even as someone who is a Brit old enough to remember him at his most newsworthy I still don't think he was famous emough for the list. The only reason he has been in the news in recent years is because his wife is a prominent daytime TV journalist who made a couple of 'tear-jerker' documentaries about looking after him. The media (particularly the BBC) loves stories about itself, witness today, one of the top stories on BBC breakfast news, 1 o'clock lunchtime news and the BBC website is basically 'One of our reporters has a new guide dog'.
