Just finished 'Hunky Dory - Who Knew?' by Laurence Myers - former manager, accountant and financier supposedly at the heart of British music (and the odd film) for 20 years. Nowhere near as interesting as the blurb would have you believe, while he came into contact with a lot of famous musicians, he had no input into the creative side at all and his involvement was primarily drawing up contracts with record companies, about which we get quite a lot, not much of which is fascinating. There are brief anecdotes about David Bowie and Marianne Faithfull (sadly not involving novel uses for a Mars Bar) but he remained steadfastly in the background while most of the interesting stuff was happening. Not worth the £17 my brother paid for it to be my Christmas present.

That’s simply not true. Anyone with a degree of interest in U.S. politics in the U.K. knows who Limbaugh is. Not anyone. I listened to a US news podcast most days for 3m prior to the US election and I don't know who Limbaugh is. Maybe I'm special :-). Not disputing either that he's a 'cert' or that some UK politicians, soap actresses, ex-rugby players, 'cult' 70s musicians etc who have been on the list in years past are a complete mystery to non-UK people (and probably quite a few UK ones too).

Because no one in he UK (outside deadpoolers) has a clue who he is?

Late to the party but just finished Queen's Gambit. Not bad but undeserving of the plaudits it has had IMO. SPOILER ALERT Found the protagonist unlikeable and difficult to care about even before the alcohol abuse/(even more) self centred behaviour kicked in. A few examples of music being used whilst portraying events on a date some time before it was written, which - being anal about pop music of the 60s amd 70s - always annoys me.

Agree with 40+ of your selections, but think if you asked 100 members of a Pointless (UK game show) audience which of your newcomers they'd heard of, I suspect Gupilil, Limbaugh, Rosemary Harris and Trintignant would all be pointless answers (i.e. no one would have heard of them). There is a trio of famous old tories (Hurd, Lawson and Tebbit) all pushing 90, would add Cleary, Clarissa Eden, Berry Gordy, Junior, Buzz Aldrin and (for a punt at no 50) Harvey Weinstein

Enjoyed Ben Elton's Identity Crisis - he has a tendency to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut in some of his books, but this one stays believable and is amusingly written. Has a pop at both the Tory right and their connections to Russia on one side of the political spectrum and the excesses of gender politics on the other.
