    Gerald Ford

Agnew published his memoirs in 1980 and caused a bit of a stir with the contents. He also ran around spouting anti-Zionist statements in 1976 or 77 or so, so that could have been what you're thinking of. He died in 1996. Yes that is probably what I'm thinking of. Thanks for that.

    Gerald Ford

Peanut poisoning? Last I heard he was in fairly good health. Didn't he join Bill Clinton and George Bush senior on a do good trip earlier this year? I forget the details but there were three of four ex-presidents meeting to discuss the environment or something, I'm sure Carter was one of them.

    Gerald Ford

No he was not. Check your history Sherlock. In 1972 Richard M. Nixon was re-elected President and his running mate was Spiro T. Agnew. Agnew ran into some problems related to taxes and had to resign. Nixon then chose Gerald Ford to replace Agnew in the Vice-Presidential slot. Ford had been elected by local constituents as a Congressman, not as a V.P. and definitely not by the entire nation. His approval as V.P. was made after hearings were conducted and he was approved....not elected....by his fellow politicians. The only time in which Gerald Ford appeared on a Presidental/Vice Presidential ballot was in 1976 when he was in the slot for President. If memory serves, Robert Dole was his running mate and it was Dole who was in the spot for V.P. so Gerald Ford never was elected by the Nation, either as President or Vice President. Thanks for this, it all makes sense now. I just couldn't work out where Spiro fitted into it all. So spiro resigned BEFORE Nixon. Did he ever hold any office again because I'm sure i read/heard about him doing something in the Carter years. Unless my timeline is very much twisted.

    Gerald Ford

No, president Ford wasn't elected in office. He was appointed vice-president after Spiro Agnew resigned and became president after Nixon did the same. regards, Hein Does that mean that Spiro would have been president if he hadn't resigned? Why did he resign, was it because he knew what Nixon was up to but didn't stop him or because he didn't know and should have realised what was going on?

I fear hope is all we have. Though a BA pilot had a good go at getting rid of Blair this morning.

    Gerald Ford

Heard about this on waking this morning. One of the more amusing president's (wasn't he always falling over etc) and the only President not to have been directly elected as he took over after Nixon but lost the election to Carter. Puzzled as to why he has not yet been put on the home page as he numbers 13 in 2006. Only 5 days to equal the record. What are the chances?

    The Bible

I take my views from the Bible. The Bible says it is a shame for a woman to have authority over a man and I quite agree for Thatcher's misrule was a great shame to the Nation. Xenon II: Mega Blast .... SUCKS .... Lemmings ..... in the arcades several years later. What as in, "she has authority over me, that's a bit of a shame"? Which particular bit of the bible have you decided to take out of context to suit your own pre-formed sexist views anyway? It's interesting that not even the church complain about women being in charge these days (except for in a few key religious positions of course), and oddly even in the most sexist (not sexiest) of times in history women still manage to become Queen i.e. considered only fit to do the most subservient tasks, or run the country.... I'm sure if I could be arsed to read The Good Book I'd find a bit that clearly shows how anyone who names themselves after a 1980's Amiga game is a twat. In the same way that some Jehova's Witnesses once proved to me the bible had predicted the (then current) Balkan conflict by showing me a passage that said, "and brother will turn against his brother" or something equally conclusive. I bet the Generals on all sides were shitting themselves when they realised the Bible had such detailed...erm...details of all their troop movements available to their rivals. No, not those sort of movements. Perhaps a new religious world order is on the cards, based on Christianity, male dominance and sci-fi type 'shootemup' computer games? It would be ridiculous if good old (well, dead) L Ron Hubbard hadn't already beaten you to it. Now if it was Rob Hubbard starting up a new religion (he of the C64 music for Delta, I-Ball, IK+ etc.) I'd sign up like a shot.... Oh, and what Thatcher did to our country was because she was a gritty, tough, uncompromising Prime Minister (who went against the rules but got results), not because she was a woman. I personally wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire, but her gender is most definitely not the issue for me. Absolutely brilliant reply!

Aww this is so sad. I love Tom and Jerry, not so keen on the Flintstones but you can't have everything.

    Margaret Thatcher

And I suppose all women should be chained to the sink, barefoot and pregnant. What a quaint view of life you have.
  12. Gwynhafyr

    Margaret Thatcher

    1. I think Blair is managing to this just as well and in some cases better. I don't think gender has anything to do with it but 'agenda' does. She set out to prove she was as tough as the men and he's set out to prove he's as influential as the US president and they were both wrong. 2. No you hadn't metioned that but I kind of guessed.
  13. Gwynhafyr

    Margaret Thatcher

Yep they'd be the ones. Seriously though at least she did think for herself unlike the present poodle even if she did come up with the wrong answer from time to time. Don't get me wrong, I'm no great lover of Mrs T, I'm even handed, I hate all politicians but I don't think she's as bad as the present PM.

    General Pinochet

I wouldn't be too sure of that. Yes I suspect there will be a good deal of cheering going on but she was the UK's first female PM and the only one with any balls to take on the unions. Discussions have already taken place about whether she will get a state funeral and the Brits being the Brits will suffer from short memory syndrome and turn out to mourn her in droves.

    General Pinochet

Could someone please explain this to this thick newbie? Do we get to choose who we are backing and win points or something? Many thanks in advance.
  16. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

You beat me to it. How many more do we need to beat the record?

    General Pinochet

Isn't everyone on the list 'unreliable'? Can a death ever be a rock solid certainty? (OK, yes, there is Saddam). Surely uncertainty is the life blood of the deathlist.

    General Pinochet

I haven't been back for some years but originally from Cwmfelinfach. More about Cwmfelinfach at Wikipedia. Small world isn't it. I hail from Aberystwyth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberystwyth but I suspect you'd guessed there was something of the Cymru about me by the name.
  19. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

I'd been thinking that. Very heavy on the politician front this year but then if you look at the ages of these international leaders it isn't so strange. All were over 60 and most had suffered some sort of health problem for years. Others whose health has caused concern this year are Mrs T and the Queen, both in their 80's.
  20. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

Ooer! They are now going for the full bypass. It was an angioplasty (spelling?) he had this morning but it didn't work now they are opening him up. Looks like DL might reach 11 by the end of this week.
  21. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

I hope Castro is going to be on the 2007 list. Looks like a sure fire winner to me.
  22. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

A lot of them do that don't they. That Italian bloke has just given it a go but was very unconvincing I thought. I suppose getting yourself operated on might be a little extreme but the courts are hardly going to drag you into the dock when you are still attached to life support.
  23. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

Nothing being reported on Sky yet and they love a good death. If he does go Sky will report on it with the irritating 'Breaking News' banner scrolling behind them ALL afternoon while the BBC might just remember to mention it after the cricket.
  24. Gwynhafyr

    General Pinochet

He's going to join Sharron and Casto on the Almost Dead list I'm guessing. And hang on in there in the twilight zone until it is 'safe' to let him die. You'd better include him on next year's list just in case.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2007

Top of my possibilites for 2007 are: Bruce Forsythe Jimmy Tarbuck - had a heart scare when asked to dance on Strictly Come Dancing John Simpson - liberator of Afghanistan now in Iraq - well someone must want to shoot him besides me. Tony Blair - doesn't look well, rumour to have serious heart problem Margaret Thatcher Queen Elizabeth - rumoured that back problem is cover up for more serious illness.
