Sorry but there ARE areas of this country that HAVE been turned over to people who are socially and culturally 'alien' to the indigenous of this country, to say otherwise would be taking the Ostrich option. The reality is that all those Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians and the like will, as the Poles and Italians did generations back, completely assimilate into our society while retaining a pride for their heritage. Unfortunately, generations later, we still have Asians who have done fuck all to achieve that and never will. Sharia Law certainly exists in their communities as does other things that really shouldn't be done at all. Its fucking stupid not to consider the faint possibility that those we now seek to embrace and bring to our little Island wont necessarily love us, wont want to embrace a western culture and will expect us to fit around them.

On that basis, Warren Mitchell would fit the bill, he's British and has looked ancient since the sixties. Yet somehow he doesn't seem worthy. It's a difficult one as I think DL benefited in a strange sort of way from worshipping at the totem-pole of the omnipresent deity that was Clive Dunn, but, as you say, he is just irreplaceable. I think a lot of Dunn's legendary status is down to the perception of time. Those of us who grew up in the seventies and eighties would have sat through episodes and episoses of Dad's Army understanding that the programme had been running forever (before one was born) and because it represented the war (which in 1975 was closer then than the Falklands war is now) pushed it further back in time in our minds. We would also recognise Dunn from kids TV and again assume the distance between the two was longer and then 20 years later when we start deadpooling and the guy is still alive it is a miracle. I agree Mitchell is a possibility but I think the closest is probably Peter Sallis who spent 40 years playing a retired man in LOTSW. As well as delighting everyone as the voice of Wallace. That's a real programme? I heard a reference to it on something and assumed it was exaggerated for comic effect. All this is a long way from William G Stewart. He was notably absent from that programme Bradly Walsh did last year about quiz programmes but that doesn't necessarily mean he's in bad health. I was actually going to reply that he had been dead for years till I googled him and found that he was well and truly alive!! Well I never!!!
