Kill or Save: UK No.3 Hits of the 70s
Death Impends replied to wannamaker's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
From what the previous 70s KoSs tell me, they were somehow even bigger in the UK than in the US. Some Osmond songs we killed in the past I didn't recognize the names at all. If I play a KoS round I'm going to educate myself on the songs I didn't know, but if it's an unfamiliar Osmond song I take that as a sign from God to steer far, far away! -

I think War is the best song here, though Rose Garden carries nostalgia points for me as my grandparents loved to play older country music and it's one of the few songs I can explicitly remember being played. I didn't have much interest in "real people things" as a child so the songs I do remember are bound to have some sentimental value. Oh Pretty Woman was another song I have explicit memories of my grandparents playing, but then, Roy's on his own level entirely. -

The latter. She's still alive, occasionally making the news with a hospitalization. I remember there was a dead pool here that was "pick ten 1910s births, first to have them all die wins", I picked her in light of a recent hospitalization and thought that it would make her a clever pick. Only for her to not be a 1910s baby after all and outlive almost every other pick!

Drew members of the Guinea Pig Club and outlived every single member. Probably for the better she was not a DDP pick, to spare the front page from my inevitable godawful "I was a member of the Guinea Pig Club too! Oh wait, that's a different guinea pig entirely" lines.

There's the stat for most picked celebs overall. Keef and Holly Johnson's total means that they're picked on every DDP where records are known (ie every game from 2000 onward + 1998). Holly Johnson, Keith Richards 26 Hulk Hogan, Liza Minnelli 25 John Astin, Michael Barrymore, Jimmy Carter, Queen Elizabeth II (d. 2022), Mikhail Gorbachev (d. 2022), Imelda Marcos, Rupert Murdoch, Mike Tyson 24 Woody Allen, Michael J. Fox, Angela Lansbury (d. 2022), Desmond Tutu (d. 2021) 23 Emperor Akihito of Japan, George W. Bush, Kirk Douglas (d. 2020), Henry Kissinger (d. 2023), Ozzy Osbourne, Prince Philip (d. 2021) 22

Cheers. Previous post modified to include her.

You know, it's late, but only four names, I'll do it now. Three of the four were not DDP hits. Two were just not picked, the other currently lacks a DDP-friendly obit. First up is Jaime de Armiñán, a Spanish director Oscar-nommed for Mi querida señorita (My Dear Senorita) and El nido (The Nest). He also wrote Nuestro fantasma (Our Ghost), y ahora es el fantasma del HPDP. WEP chalks ups 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus). Well before Susan Collins perfected the usage of "concerned" to seem far more moderate than you actually are, Beverly LaHaye founded the evangelist anti-feminist group Concerned Women for America. She learned how to be a homemaker because she felt it would teach her to be more submissive, and Reagan said she changed the face of America, so yeah. As far as the HPDP is concerned, she's a unique pick for arghton worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus). Josip Manolic served only a year as Prime Minister of Croatia, but he did manage to be in the post when the country declared independence from a quickly-dissolving Yugoslavia. Seen as a conciliatory figure in his later years, he also saw scrutiny for oppression under his watch during the Tito years. Croatian social media accorded him a Zsa Zsa stature he worked hard to earn: His first wife died in a house fire, his second was 35 years his junior but still predeceased him, he survived COVID aged 101, and he received last rites at the end of 2023 yet was able to muster up another season's worth of breathing. He could only run on low fuel for so long, so was a natural cult pick here: wannamaker gains 40 points, Book and chilean way 35, and John Key 15. Political heavyweight Frank Field needs little introduction hereabouts, with his surprise endurance in the face of terminal cancer frustrating deadpoolers like his political quirks frustrated Labour mainstreamers. He made a very strong debut in 2022 at 26 pickers before collapsing to 9 in 2023. He enjoyed a decent rebound to 16 teams this time: drol fields 45 points. chilean way, Hell, John Key, and Pedro67 35. maryportfuncity and The Unknown Man 30. Captain Hemlock, Thatcher, and The Old Crem 25. ladyfiona 15. diego and Torva Messor punch in their second sub hit for 50 points. and An Fear Beag, BuffaloPhil and Charles de Gaulle their first for 25 points. New scoreboard ahead. The heavyweight Field hit means a new leader, as Torva Messor climbs to first on the back of clearing her subs bench: 1. Torva Messor 200.19 2. Perhaps 190.19 3. Banana 173 4. Thatcher 155.19 5. MariNisia 151 =6. Book 135.19 =6. drol 135.19 8. diego 124 9. YorkshireBanker 120.19 10. chilean way 119 11. Should update tomorrow. Seems Jaime de Arminan, Josip Manolic (who got a WaPo shout to skate by here in face of his dearth of UK press), and Frank Field were the only hits since last time?

Did some searching and found it interesting that she directly succeeded fellow centenarian Janis Paige as the title character in Broadway's Mame. Angela Lansbury originated the role and Celeste Holm also portrayed her, so although Ann Miller "only" reached 80 taking the character on Broadway seems a good omen for lasting a long time!

Folk shitting on vulnerable minorities gets characterized by the powers that be in society as "forthright telling it like it is". Whereas if the vulnerable speak up, or folk speak up in defense of the vulnerable, it gets characterized as whiny. Equal parts saddening and disgusting.

People I Was Surprised To Find Are Still Alive
Death Impends replied to Catherine's topic in DeathList Forum
I had pared through those charts in 2020/21 and during that time I found a music website ran by Gail Menefee's nephew that has an article on the Loreleis. The site is still being updated, so I'm inclined to assume Menefee still alive until he mentions otherwise. IDK if the same would apply to Reinagle. -
I should've spent more than a split second thinking there.
