I associate esophageal cancer more closely with stomach cancer than head-and-neck cancers. Head-and-neck cancers are among the more survivable, with there even being quite a few people going from stage 4 to sustained remission, whereas esophageal survival rates are much worse.

Probably because WV is a super conservative state (and even the state's Democrats tend to be more conservative, albeit quite a few don't actually vote Democrat any more) so they have to go for a rather conservative Dem to have any chance.
