Useless trivia: I just learned that he was the ex-husband of Ruth Jacott (Vrede #6 in 1993, a little better known I think), so she was one of his background singers in 1992, and he was one of hers in 1993.

And, looking at the post above last one.. Lenny Kuhr was heckled during a concert last week because of her (alleged?) pro-Israel stance: https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/03/activists-heckle-singer-lenny-kuhr-74-over-israel-links/ .

Humprey Campbell (66), #9 in 1992 for The Netherlands, has died. (Never heard Wijs me de weg before today, so it didn't become a Eurovision evergreen..)
-
I read an interview today with Thérèse Steinmetz, second to last at 1967 Eurovision for The Netherlands. She still performs and I've never seen a better looking 90 year old (but well, most likely not all natural) - Greetje Kauffeld (#10 in 1961, 84 now) is interviewed as well and is also still in good shape.

It was once again pretty quiet on the Pere Ubu front (they released a new album but did only a few shows) so I decided to look for any updates.. And i found an update from David Thomas a few days ago. There has been a lot going on, he married his gf/manager, he's been in the hospital and has had operations which were like hell.

With all those survivors from early lists dying this year I really think it's time for a Leo Beenhakker thread, the sole survivor of the 1991 list. Been willing to start one for many years (in fact, every time I read a snippet of news on him) but never really took the time, but I will for sure regret it if he passes away without thread. He's the former football trainer of (among many many other clubs) Real Madrid, Ajax and Feyenoord and of the Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago and Poland national team. I have no clue why he was on the 1991 list (i hope anyone else can shine a light on that) but but he's an avid cigar smoker, has had skin cancer in 2015 and he looks pretty pale nowadays. Plus he's 78 years old. He announced his retirement from the football world in 2015 but most likely he still is some kind of off-the-radar technical advisor at Sparta Rotterdam. Last news i can find is a radio interview in april this year, with Beenhakker complaining about sitting at home and feeling his life was over without being able to meet people and watching football.

With the new year approaching i decided it was a good opportunity to look for any clues about Beenhakkers current health.. but no news at all.. no new pictures, no new interviews, not even a response when Feyenoord won the Eredivisie. So we need an insider...

Smeets died today. He lasted longer than I expected..

Adler turned 90 yesterday. Last week he was present at the Lakers together with Ray Nicholson. No sign of Jack (but maybe he'll only show up for the playoffs)
-
Looks like Maurice was sitting front row.

I think it's good to have some people on the list that make a lot of public appearances, so we'll have something to talk about. A list full of celebrities living off radar and then suddenly dying is not much fun issit?
-
Didn't see any video yet, but he was walking around on his own (without cane) at the Brazil GP yesterday and talking to reporters.

Just had to share this pic.. Han is 81 now, still doing great, but tonight he got a honorary award together with André Rieu

Henk Hofstede, singer of Nits (artpop with quite some european fame in the 80's thanks to MTV, as well as 'the band I've seen most often in my life') and friend of Vrienten and Rot, is suffering from a rare autoimmune disease. Wants to continue performing, but not sure if he can.

He gave an interview last night in which he revealed he recently had another operation with a lot of complications. Right now he needs to keep rest for two more weeks.

Jan Jongbloed has died: https://nos.nl/artikel/2488668-voormalig-oranje-doelman-jan-jongbloed-82-overleden . He played professionally until he had a heart attack during a match at the age of 44. A year before his son (21) died while he was stuck by lightning during a football match.
-
Jan Janssen looked really youthful for many years, but after his liver cancer in 2015 he looks more his age. But he still does interviews and did the kick off of his own Jan Janssen classic earlier this year.

I'm intruiged by his toupée.

I read about a new live recording of a John Coltrane concert and wondered how many jazz musicians that played with Coltrane are still alive. Wikipedia gave me the names of Albert Heath (88, who played on his first album als a band leader) Julius Priester (88) and Reggie Workman (86). He played (once) with Sonny Rollins as well. But how many more are there? Edit: Found some more: Kenny Burrell (91), Louis Hayes (86), Roy Haynes (98), Archie Shepp (86), Carlos Ward (83).

Dead (in fact, for almost 6 months now) -
Torben Ulrich hasn't been mentioned in this thread. Apart from being Lars Ulrich's dad, he was the oldest player in the atp top 100 ever (aged 45, in 1977). He is 94 now. This is a recent pic from facebook, the discription says his body is weak (could be posted in The Fringes Of Fame as well)

André Darrigade was present at the start of today's stage in his hometown Dax. Still able to do interviews.

The Guardian has it as well now: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jun/23/peter-brotzmann-legend-of-free-jazz-dies-at-82, just 4 months after they reviewed his show in London: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/feb/12/peter-brotzmann-review-free-jazz-saxophonist-on-fiercely-good-form .

Another new interview:

Yeah my dad had the shingles last year, resulting in not being able to raise one arm for months. Good thing he's not in the Hitler Youth.
