How many chess players aged 95+ are still with us? There are several with Wiki profiles but I think they may just be missing death dates.

Don’t give drol ideas…

Seems like an appropriate time to resurrect this old chestnut from 2012. With the news that Camilla will be Queen (consort), can’t wait to see what ridiculous plotline The Globe/National Enquirer will run with…

She’s declined slightly. Mahathir has cardiac problems which is far more serious than back/posture issues. Seems a lot of nonagenarians declined over the lockdowns. Not being able to stay as active had a negative effect on them physically. I watched the tribute to Betty White the other day and her step daughter said that if it hadn’t been for the pandemic, Betty would have continued working and that she’d still be here. If the Queen had been 4-5 years older during the lockdowns I think the pandemic would’ve had a much worse impact on her. Very important to keep moving at that age.

Political Discussions And Ranting Thread

Pedo peer Lord Nazir Ahmed (wiki), 64, has been jailed for 5.5. years for attempting to rape a child under 13. One of Tony's Cronies. Looking at his CV prior to becoming a peer, one has to wonder what his credentials ever were in the first place. Anyway, not that it matters now. He was forced out of the Lords in 2020. They will now likely try to strip him of his life peerage, which has never happened in modern times. It almost happened to Joseph Kagan (who had his knighthood but not his peerage stripped) and Jeffrey Archer. It will require an Act of Parliament to do but the support seems there. Let's see. -
Christ, that's a weird story! Baronets are by no means high aristocracy. They're pretty low in the pecking order and many of these ppl have long since stopped caring about their lineage and succession. In fact, many now live abroad. Others don't use the hereditary "Sir" because they're often embarrassed by it (Edward Mountain being one such example). I suppose you would be if you had to answer the awkward question of "so what did you get your knighthood for?”.

“Er, I wasn’t being serious. I’ll post a “joking” placard as a cue next time, but for the time being maybe stop taking other posts as seriously as you take yourself? Relax a little. Don’t let it get to the private message meltdown again.”
-
Hmmm not so sure about that. Your aggressive rants on the Kier/Boris/Trump threads aren’t too distinguishable from any of your “jokes” elsewhere. I reckon you’re a rageaholic. A Flaming Quim
-
I think you might be up there as one of the most intolerant ppl I’ve come across Quim, and I’ve met Commies and neo-Nazis. You seem to want everyone you disagree with dead. It’s all a bit… fascisty?
-
That doesn't mean we want to hear about it twice though.
-
Can't say much due to confidentiality but I've contacted friends in the media and they're away to do a big story on this.

Francisco Raúl Villalobos Padilla dead at 101. Seems he was diagnosed on Thursday 27th Jan as an asymptomatic COVID-19 case. He remained a mild/asymptomatic case until yesterday, when his health suddenly deteriorated.
-
Yeah not trying to take anything away from you. Merely trying to diverge onto something that I can give an opinion from personal experience on. I'll just gently remind you that I wasn't born when Ravenscraig was an issue.

I just know him as one of the "Labour for Independence" ppl during the referendum. He was probably one of their few members who was actually in the Labour Party(!!) The group was choke full of SNP activists who pretended to be Labour members/activists to make it look like there was a broader spread of support for Indy. They were all exposed, not sure why they thought it would work.

Spanish is such a beautiful language.

Thanks for this! I've added her. Not sure how I missed her tbh. There may be others I've missed too given how huge a project it was to do. Greece and the USA look certain to become the next countries with no leaders left from the Cold War.
-
Updated the Cold War leaders list following the death of Christos Sartzetakis. Just Constantine II left from Greece. Still a pretty "young" name. 82 in June, though admittedly I know nothing of his current health.

Believe it or not, but organisations like ISIS and the Taliban do maintain a good thread of communication with the western media, to an extent. They have to. I've been at the Telegraph before when one of my journo friends received a phone call from a Boko Haram spokesperson. Very strange experience. You should be okay for points. ISIS were very quick to confirm the death of al-Baghdadi in 2019. They had replaced him within a week as well. Quick replacement makes it look like the death is not as meaningful to them as the West would like to believe. It's a show of strength and resilience.

This article states he was unable to attend the Jan 25th installation of a new archbishop due to failing health. Also mentions his last public appearance was in Nov 2021. Says that he is "well and sound", which sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me. Months rather than years left would be my guess. -
That's true, but it's generally the same. Until it's explained, I wouldn't take it as confirmation of her death. The names "Vera" "Frances" and "Ward" are not exactly the most common, but nor are they rare... ... we've been here before when mistakes have been made with similar or same named people. Baroness Turner (wiki) springs to mind. There was a death notice for a different Muriel Winifred Turner circulating a couple of years before the Baroness died, and the family had to issue a statement denying she was dead after most assumed it was the same person.
-
Yes, also @Gisooo, if you find any new information on anyone but it's dubious and unverified, then it belongs in the Detective thread. FYI though, it appears Vera Frances may have died in 2016 in Southwark, London, but you'd need to prove it's the same person somehow. Her maiden surname was Still so you could verify it by ordering a death certificate (if you really care that much) or getting verification from elsewhere online that she went to live in Southwark in her last years. WARD, VERA FRANCES 1930 GRO Reference: DOR Q3/2016 in SOUTHWARK (251-1A) Entry Number 514050703

That isn't true. She was interviewed in 2008. It was her husband who died in Cambridgeshire in 2000.
-
She definitely was in 2009 because she granted an interview. Best place to find your answer is via a photo and/or post search on Facebook under both English and Urdu/Hindi? names.
