Unusual East Coast earthquake - 4.8 off New York.

Is it me, or are earthquakes getting really common these days?

An earthquake has to be 7+ to be considered major. There are only on average 15 of those per year on the entire planet.

There are variations from year to year. It goes up and down, but there's no evidence to suggest they're becoming more or less frequent in general.

    Make that 248.

Death notice for Hans Hamilton, 4th Baron HolmPatrick (wiki), aged 69. Sat in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer from 1991 to 1999.

  3. Oh and btw, a lot of the hereditaries are absolutely skint. Some live in squalor – flats or houses falling apart in disrepair, leaking pipes, damp and rot everywhere. Just because their great grandfather had money and land does not guarantee they do. There's a lot of modern day ignorance about the hereditaries.

The only group of people our population is more ignorant about is the military, what they do and how they operate. Yet, just like the hereditaries, everyone is quick out the door to give you their strong opinion about them.

I think it's easy to be nice when you inherit huge landholdings from which you derive a merry income, knowing you'll pass it on to your kids relatively tax free because it is held in trust or by a nominated company. Meanwhile, Mrs Pensioner who got that house when her husband died gets her family smashed with a 40 per cent inheritance tax bill.

No doubt this chap did a lot of good in his area though. Just a pity they have all the privileges with little of the responsibility we all have in our lives.

So you're saying peoples' mood and behaviour is driven by their social status or income? That's very classist/snobby of you (see how I turned that against you, motor mouth ;)).

    Absolutely love these nobs' names.

So it is with a sense of responsibility that I refer to the report of Gerard Neville Mark Fane-Trefusis, 22nd Baron Clinton, aged 89: https://www.sidmouthherald.co.uk/news/24231080.lord-clinton-gerard-nevile-mark-fane-died-aged-89/

Heir apparent is his son Charles Patrick Rolle Fane-Trefusis (b. 1962).

That's a bit unfair. Silly name does not = nob. On the contrary, I've always found the hereditary peers are far better people – nicer and wiser – than the crony life peers the HoL is now stuffed with.

His death means that 249 out of the 666 hereditaries removed in 1999 are still living. New and improved list can be found here. Funny to think that King Charles was one of the hereditaries removed in '99!

There's controversy on that. According to most sources he was born on 01/11/11, but Shanghai census always gave 01/11/12 as a date. I don't doubt about his age.

We ultimately settled for 1912 on Wiki. The reason being that 1911 could have been spawned as a confusion over his age according to East Asia age reckoning.

Not selected in any deadpools as far as I can see...pity.

A pity. She would have been a hella good pick.

  8. Markoff or the Taiwanese guy don’t count. I think the List of Centenarians page on Wiki uses a fair definition ie known for reasons other than their longevity so oldest veteran, oldest marathon runner, oldest beekeeper blah blah blah don’t count. I’d also exclude masters athletes unless they had a professional or amateur athletic career of note before longevity brought them further attention.

  9. So Zhang Lixiong's death means there are now no notable persons born in 1913.

If Shi Ping dies that will wipe out 1912.
If Marita Camacho Quirós dies that will wipe out 1911 (not counting Fraudster Singh, who "turned 113" yesterday... **groan**)
If James Clayton Flowers dies that will wipe out 1915.

1914 still has 9 bloody names. Could be a couple of years yet before we see that one off.

Who's the oldest living former member of a Parliament now that Zhang Lixiong supuestamente morto?

According to my list it's France's Jean Turco (b. 19 December 1917), though oldest politician is surely China's Song Ping (b. 30 April 1917).

Had expected an obit by now in the form of a Mirror or Metro style article. I don't think he's the type to get a full Guardian or Telegraph style obit, so looking like he could end up as a List of the Lost name in the DDP.

Olympedia missed big time with Igor Rudakov whose Russian wiki has a date of death with reference

The reference looks like it could be credible but is a "take my word for it" style reference that cites an article without linking to anything. Probable that Olympedia looked into it and couldn't find anything to back it up.
