    2009 DDP

TMIB - you have my regular updates on the front page, plus DL to discuss any illnesses (Not that anybody does any more, mind...) I normally rant in the (unread) e-mails anyway. If you wish to start a blog that is officially "endorsed" by DDP, be my guest. Handrejka- Thank you. Being laid low after surgery today, I haven't had the strength to get on here until now & catch up. So only 5 out of 100+.. EDIT - It's 6 - Lynn Kohlman obit Interesting. Very in-ter-est-er-ing (said a la Alec Guinness) I shall put it to the wider audience whenever someone dies (F*** knows when that'll be going by news lately) & make a final decision late October so everyone has enough time to prepare. However, I think changes - as they are - will be minimal. I may well take you up on that OoO... Also, Has there been any points won thanks to the much malaigned 'Other Lives' Obit in the Grauniad?

    2009 DDP

I have a few suggestions in terms of presentation.. It is workable to have a blog, to stream latest news, gossip on potential picks health etc? Also, how about a podcast? Everybody's doing it...

    Jane Goodie

But I remember coming across an article once which said she blinded herself with a pair of scissors, so I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Funny if she did go though (in the peculiar sense). She'd probably go down as the Janis Joplin of reality TV...

    2009 DDP

It's funny you've kicked off DDP09 OoO because I was sorely tempted to start a thread as I'm already pondering possibles and definites for next year! (99 days to go..) Yes the Guardian is a farce, but I would only include 'proper' obits, that's published in the paper with the exception of those wanky "My father Alfred was a great milkman" 'Other Lives' obits.. Thing is, if you exclude the Guardian, do you also exclude the Times, Telegraph etc if they have brief mentions? As for those who are famous for being ill, there needs to be some definition here. Linda Uttley and Paul Birch are at least known for something else other than illness (to be fair though, I didn't know Uttley from adam before the news of her illness, whereas I've seen Birch play in the dim and distant past). But those who are known only for their 'brave fight' and nothing else, maybe should be excluded... As for British bonus...hmmm. Don't want to complicate things. The great thing about DDP is its simplicity. That's why I didn't enter the other deadpools around: They're far too fiddly! I did think about an idea for bonus points for unique picks even if they don't die! I know it sounds odd, but once the cats let out of the bag, they have to stiff or all your hard work digging out a unique would be for nothing. You get the bonus first and then the extra points when they die. The drawback of course is that any old (or young) hobbledehoy gets chosen, even if they haven't the remotest chance of pegging it! There are my thoughts...

    The Dead Of 2008

Yes, but it's not really what he was best remembered for - although no-one here will remember him anyway because no-one's heard of him (Apart from BC Alum perhaps, he excels in knowing people no-one of us have ever heard of! Heath who? Tim who? ). It seemed a random thing to post about his basketball, when you consider for 25 years he was a baseball coach at Indiana University. Anyway, I mis-read it on Wikipedia & thought Emil Andres had died all over again. I hope this trend of nobody famous dying continues until December 31st. It certainly would make life easier.... I keep forgetting that I am a Yankee and most of you guys are British. That's why I "excel" in knowing people none of you guys have heard of. We Yanks have different standards of who a celebrity is. If you ask an American who Jeremy Beadle, Carol Barnes or Mark Speight is, 99.9% of Americans would be completely scratching their heads. On the other hand, if we ask British people who Bernie Mac, Tim Russert, or Don S. Davis are, most British would be flabbergasted. Never the Twain mate, Never the Twain...

    Dead Drummers

Wasn't this the same Travis Barker who was falsely reported dead about a year ago??? Yes. There were also rumors that Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction frontman) and Gavin DeGraw were on the plane, but both were not and are still alive. Now there are rumors that one of the dead is Shanna Moakler, Travis Barker's ex. However, there are other rumors that the female who died was identified as just an assistant of Travis (and not Shanna). So who knows????? Right now, this plane crash is big news in the states b/c there was the possibility that all three musicians (Perry Farrell, Gavin DeGraw, and Travis Barker) were on the plane during the crash. This could've easily been another tragedy like February 3, 1959. Imagine if all three were on the plane and none of them made it...America would be mourning the loss of three prominent young musicians. But it looks like all of them are gonna be okay (Travis is still in critical condition, but rumor has it the doctors are optimistic that he'll make it). Travis Barker is VERY lucky to havep pull through. Bernie Mac notwithstanding, many celebrities who were on the brink of death have miraculously pulled through this year (Morgan Freeman, Kelsey Grammar, Patrick Swayze, Elizabeth Taylor). God must really love our American celebrities. With respect, none of them would have matched up to Buddy Holly, or even Lynyrd Skynrd.....

    Paul Gascoigne

In relative DL terms, still a bit of a long shot, but you never know. Would you risk him in your DDP 2009 team, when you are likely to be defending your hard-earned title? As you must know by now TMIB, the DL and the DDP are chalk and cheese. I second the Gazza proposal and will continue to niggle at the committee members I know. Much good that will do. V. True, Harry. There are 30 more spots available in the DL than in DDP, so he would represent much more of a 'risk' in that sense... I suppose there can be room among the low hanging fruit and Clive Dunn...

People Who Are Dead According To Wikipedia...

But they often are - probably because they think they're too obscure & nobody would notice. If you put.. Amy Winehouse, say, it would be ignored. But the Wiki police are getting stringent. When I posted Phil Hill's death on there before the official press announcement it was removed after a mere two minutes - by the time I had a citation - it had gone! Where they in denial or something?

Newcastle and Sunderland skipper Bobby Moncur's copped it. That's another one in the can. He had a heart attack last week after fighting cancer. Bobby Moncur's not dead either, dickwad, why don't you f**k off and play with the traffic? Ooo I'm in a mood. And people think that I rant!!! Is this just another example of the British "Justice" system exacting their pound of flesh? Terrorists free to walk the streets, a self confessed dangerous sex offender released, despite psychiatric reports saying he will probably reoffend and an elderly, on his last legs, lag who probably did no more than shift the sacks into the getaway cars, kept inside, half dead and will probably die before his release. Makes perfect sense. Don;t forget the old lag spent years in Brazil mocking England and it's justice system, this the UK getting it's, he only came back fro bit of free healthcare and he can get that in jail just as easily as he can outside, plus where is he supposed to go if they let him out? Not exactly got a nice semi in the suburbs to go home too has he? He lives in Norwich, that's punishment enough....
