    Ask A Deathlister

I did go and vote, as I'd feel too hypocritical not to, as I'm always encouraging others to vote. I'm going to be very interested in a) the turnout and b ) the percentage of spoilt ballots. From what I read in the local press, there is much apathy/antipathy towards these elections, at least here in the 'city' of Brighton & Hove, but I'm wouldn't necessarily assume that that extends to the rest of the county.

Former Manchester United player, PA announcer, DJ and scout Harry McShane has died aged 92. He played in the 1951 title winning season but didn't get a medal as he hadn't played the requisite number of games, because of a knee injury. He was also the father of actor Ian McShane.

New Here And Just Saying Hello

I was thinking of putting him on my list for the next DDP, but then I found out you can't murder anyone on your list You can, but bear in mind the authorities take a dim of this, plus you don't get any points.

Francis Matthews has been on my DDP team for couple of years now. I've a feeling he might be indestructible. Just seen Francis Matthews on stage this very evening, at a Film & TV Nostalgia gathering near Elstree (a superb evening!). Very frail and at times somewhat bewildered. Sad to say I think he'll be on my 2013 list, if he lasts that long... Francis Matthews has been on my DDP team for couple of years now. I've a feeling he might be indestructible.

    The New Dunn...

Half-right, at least The way I remember it is: Firstly, Clive was always GR's man, from the original night at the Mandela till the day he died. He certainly suggested him, made sure he was written down and put on the list. (Actually, just about everyone written down on the original manuscript made the '87 list, except for a racehorse which had died earlier that day/week - why we were even suggesting dead horses does show how much booze had been consumed, I suppose). Anyway, we may have thought he was older than he really was, but I'm sure we soon found out the truth so it doesn't explain why he kept making the list. Which was because, despite our protests, GR had this certain thing about Dunny and, being a stubborn kind of fellow, always insisted he get added. In the end the rest of us grew to accept, even relish, his inevitable place on the list. And when the DL turned into a website under GR's benevolent dictatorship, Dunn's position became virtually unassailable. So you can see the History Of Clive was an organic process over time amongst friends, and no matter how many good 'replacements' there might be, its pre-internet nature means there can never be another in the same mould. I think some memorial would be nice though, and there are plenty of good ones on this thread, but just remember - GR doesn't really do democracy, and that's the way I like it. Uh-huh. Finally, though I doubt they'll stick around, it was nice to see Clive's passing bring a few old faces back (and maybe a few new ones). If I've read this right, it was an organic process originating during a discussion while the committee were half-drunk. So, to arrive at a suitable replacement the very least we need is another discussion where the participants are half drunk. I'm game. Anyone else?

Not really, as this is the third report he's had on this site, spread over 5 days, whereas poor old Clive is getting his all in one hit.

I don't think you can plan a successor, but maybe one will emerge, and we'll just instinctively know when (if) that happens.

    Clive Dunn

I'm sure you mean Bud Flanagan and the Band of the Coldstream Guards.
  17. Ronnie Biggs. Two reasons: 1) If Dunn can go, anything is possible. 2) He's not in my 'Ronnies' theme team, which makes his going more likely.

Carmen Basilio, the two-weight world champion has died aged 85. As a footnote, I see he worked for the Genesee Brewing Co after his retirement I've had many a happy evening partaking of their product but such was the effect on one's constitution the following morning, it was rapidly nicknamed 'genocide'.
