Its 30 years since the death of Innes Ireland, army officer and racing driver. After some success racing sports cars, he was picked up by Formula One Team Lotus in 1959, finishing 4th in the world drivers championship the following year. The 1961 season began badly, with a crash in practice of the first race of the season, the Monaco GP, which resulted in a broken leg; he recovered to win the US Grand Prix some five months later, finishing the season in 6th place, after which he was 'let go' by Lotus, Colin Chapman electing to replace him with Jim Clark. In the 24 hours Le Mans he finished once (of 6 entries), in 6th place, and in the 1967 NASCAR Daytona 500 (his only participation in the race), where his engine blew up outside the stands. He retired at the end of the season. He died aged 63. Each year, the BRDC (of which he was once President) awards The Innes Ireland Trophy to that driver who has displayed courage and sportsmanship as epitomised by Ireland.

No-one ever mentions his managerial career... But seriously, one of the greats, from a different age, when football was more about enjoyment rather than big business.

Its 31 years since the death of comedy actor Bob Todd. He performed with a veritable Who's Who of British comedy talent, including Dick Emery, Sid James, Spike Milligan and Marty Feldman but its his position of straight man/stooge for Benny Hill that he's most remembered. Having a fondness for drink, he once missed a performance at the London Palladium and woke up five days later in a Dublin Hospital. For this transgression he was fired by Hill, but was later reinstated. He was featured in This is Your Life in 1984. He missed Hill's funeral owing to a series of mishaps, including a traffic jam, and missing his train owing to standing on the wrong platform. He died, aged 70, six months later, falling victim the curse of Half Man Half Biscuit after 7 years and 14 days.

My Sex Education 2p, FWIW. Good, but not as good as S1-S3, but still better than most of the stuff I've watched recently.. My major quibble was the number of new characters introduced, but I suppose that's inevitable with the change in school/move to US. Shame we also lost some of my favourite old ones too. Regarding the music, it seemed as though there was more Ezra Furman in S1-S3, whereas S4 had more generic (for want of a better word) tunes. -

"Queen of Rockabilly" Wanda Jackson is 86 today. Minimal success in the UK charts, her biggest hit being her cover of Let's Have a Party (number 32, 1960). More success on the continent with her German language recordings, as were popular at the time, especially Santo Domingo, which reached number 1 in Austria and also charted in Germany & Belgium. -

Composer Howard Shore is 77 today. (Picture by Sam Santos, Canadian Film Centre) Toronto-born, he learnt a multitude of instruments as a child, and studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He met Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels at summer camp at age 13, which lead to his involvement in SNL, including writing the original opening theme as well as the closing theme. he's also credited with the name "The Blues Brothers" for Aykroyd & Belushi. He's the winner of three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, four Grammys and a plethora of other awards (though never a BAFTA, despite 6 nominations). Into the West, the closing theme to Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe. -
I interpreted it as he didn't like the fact that Gatwa is gay/flamboyant rather than black, as he was complimentary (ish) about Jo Martin

Singer, songwriter & producer Chris Andrews is 81 today. He wrote and produced several hit songs for Adam Faith and Sandie Shaw, amongst others, including Shaw's UK number one hit Long Live Love. As a solo artists, he had a number of UK chart entries in the mid-60s, his biggest being Yesterday Man, reaching number 3. This reached number 1 in Europe and elsewhere, establishing his popularity in Germany & Austria, (possibly owing to the similarity of the rhythm of his songs to that of 'Oom-pah' music!) as well as South Africa and Zimbabwe. The instrumental segment of his second hit To Whom it Concerns was used as the theme to RTE's Late Late Show. -
