This is probably my all-time favourite trope: when proper full-scale cheating occurs in a field that most people take see as a sedate hobby. Inspired by the news that 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League champion Aleksandar Antonov has been stripped of his title for unknown reasons. I wanted to use this thread to collate other instances and see if you knew of any others. In 2017, former British Scrabble champion (and Scrabble columnist for The Times) Allan Simmons was banned from competitive play for three years after he was caught looking in the bag before drawing tiles. In 2008, Kristina Contes had her membership of the Scrapbooking Hall of Fame revoked when she was found to have taken false credit for photos she included in her scrapbooks. The story of this and the war between two different schools of scrapbooking thought (the traditional white picket fence mom crowd and the upstart Myspace-influenced scene kids of the early 2000s) really should be made into a movie. And, of course, there was the bad blood, corruption and accusations of widespread cheating that marred the 1990 Subbuteo World Cup: Anyone got anything else?

Of moderate note and on the "classy pick" vibe, long-time New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz had a stroke back in February and still hasn't returned to editing duties. He does still make radio appearances though so idk.

Scenes when he holds on to cast a vote, and his last words are "I think it's time to back a third-party candidate".

The designer Gerald Gulotta, who has items currently on exhibit in the V&A, Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian, died in 2018 without any news coverage. The first two museums still list him as alive in their bios as well.

He was on the (second) incarnation of the 100 Great Black Britons list. Always struck me as a flawed idea, because even the "all races welcome" version of the list had to include jobbers like Michael Crawford, sex-with-children-afficionado John Peel and Bono (not great, not British). And yet the 100 GBB list still, twice, managed to miss out Walter Tull.

Did you find his personal Facebook account? Gives some more information, that he was born in Northampton, and that his birthday was August 23rd. Going to guess that self-help author Lynda Field (nee Goronwy) was his sister, which also gives us his parents' names (Idwal and Barbara).

Carter would put me in the lead but I'm almost certainly going to need more points because I don't have Godley. Kamolvisit going (95% chance) and QOing (80% chance, less if it's a busy news week) would give me some nice breathing room. Elmore Smith going would be close to sewing it up for me, but that's probably less than a 50/50 (he was always high risk/high reward as a pick).

Would be kind of fitting if the one team that didn't pick Carter is the team that wins the DDP.

Archie Karas, who turned his last $10,000 into $40,000,000 during one of the longest winning streaks in Vegas history (only to lose it all again in a few months) dead at 73. At one point during his run the Binion casino ran out of $5,000 chips due to them all being in Karas' bankroll.

Williams has had "personal issues" in the past, which is why he seems to miss 50% of the Fast Show reunions. Dunno if he's over them these days.

Was well enough to give a statement to PA following Chris Serle's death. Beginning to think she's a lock to see in 2025.
