    Thoughts On The 2022 List

I am getting the hint, quite a subtle hint, that you might not be a huge fan of the pro-wrestling lark, Biblio.

    Academic Footnotes

Lung cancer is noted but the death was so sudden it took most of his friends by surprise. We had a drink in his memory last week (but I didn't want to mention him on here till the broadsheet obits arrived). Ted was a hilarious man and a brilliant teacher, a tsunami of educational stuff, blue jokes and drink! A complete one of a kind.

    Betty White

It was on Channel 4, but Channel 4 was the place to go for US sitcoms at that time - Cheers was on 4, Frasier and Friends were too. I'm just about old enough to remember it being talked about (but only watched it as an adult decades later) but a quick look over the Radio Times archives has references to it being a smash hit on Four, and certainly big enough for White to have been interviewed on Wogan, and appeared on Comic Relief (1991, apparently, which I would have seen but have no memories of whatsoever!). Which hypocrite was it again who said these discussions were pointless? TV Granny Syndrome. Alas, there can only be one and for me, Angela Lansbury (or to be precise, Jessica Fletcher) locked that role down early on!

    Betty White

I was woken up by Mrs msc playing Spectors music this morning so it was literally part of the soundtrack of my life earlier! Anyhow, tbh I've never understand the continual wrangling over folks international fame or lack of it on here. If you liked the person, what does it matter if 5 others did or 5 billion? That's just me. Its one of those boring inanities alongside "I never heard of this person/Who?" - Google it if that's puzzling, it's what most of us always do!

    Keir Starmer

Who is the least popular Tory contender with the public? That's my choice for next PM.

    Keir Starmer

tbh Labour did show small signs pre-Christmas of waking up from their long slumber. A competent and sensible government would have been wary of this potentiality.

    Milan Kundera

If they are, it rarely shows! You might like Zen, tbh, though it has a right downer ending.

    Deathlist Cup 2022

    2017 - 26 competitors 2018 - 28 competitors 2019 - 47 competitors 2020 - 42 competitors 2021 - 41 competitors To date. Looks like a record breaking number of competitors this time.

    Deathrace 2022

Nearly 58, in fact. Although there is a strong line of thought among Bond fans that Roger Moore should have retired at 55 after filming Octopussy which was a more fitting farewell (and made more of the fact he was clearly an older Bond), rather than come back again for the disappointing View to a Kill. Something Pierce Brosnan failed to take on when hanging around for the abysmal Die Another Day.

    Robert Durst

Will add the front page obit is one of Grim's best in ages. "In 2001, misfortune struck again, when an elderly neighbour of Durst’s disappeared and turned up dismembered..." gave me a good laugh as a turn of phrase.

No, there's only 24 returnees on the list, to fit that theory. DDT (who is an admin and therefore would know) said Denis Law was the sub a few days ago.

He one of your Crumble DDP picks too?

    Boris Johnson

If anything, holding the Hartlepool election so quickly was an error as the Tories haven't had such friendly mood music since last May. They couldn't have strung it out till October-ish time when folk started getting pissed off badly, mind you.
  14. msc

    Horse Racing

Yes, but its great news for folk who might pick these obscure notables in deadpools and need a QO.

    Boris Johnson

All I'll add is: see this lingering death by a thousand cuts when everyone knows Boris's tenure is fucked but on it lingers on and on like a fart in a church? And how the exact same thing happened with Theresa May? It's really killing that old claim that the Tories are shit hot at getting rid of leaders ruthlessly when they need to. It's the seemingly random (to us non-medical experts) nature of it too. I've had friends far healthier than me catch covid and just die in days (and no, you don't just get over that in under 2 years), whereas others who were number 1 on the vulnerable list and caught it, leading to a shared "oh shit, no" among our friends have managed to recover from it. Those underlying conditions can be anything from cancer to undiagnosed mild asthma, which the person could have lived with for 30 odd more years.

    Derby Dead Pool 2022

And I genuinely nearly choked on my lunch at the time. Granger was a young doctor who was diagnosed with one of the rare but incurable sarcomas in her late 20s and, concerned by the quality of end of life care in the NHS, went about campaigning to get it changed to be more patient friendly, to the point of her campaign being linked to government policy (iirc the Hello My Name Is stuff is still linked to the NHS/Health dept online). She died in 2016 after lasting considerably longer than anyone expected, aged only 34, and now has buildings named after her, the annual Kate Granger Award for compassionate care beyond the call of duty in the NHS and her campaign was cited down the early stages of the pandemic, as the NHS was being overcome by the number of fatal covid cases. She was quite big in the news around 2014-16 and in fact it was my mum who broke the news of her death to me!
  17. Durst finished 12 spots off a TCD spot, so I was nearly at 3 obits to write for the quiet game already. Making a mockery of me having a bit of a rest! As for wagers, I'm afraid Sir Creep beat me in one of those a few years ago and the shame was just too much. My wallet's still scarred!

    The 3rd Death of 2022

    Look away, Book. Marianne.
  19. I did genuinely see folk elsewhere, non-deadpool wise, say the weekend reminded them a bit of 2016 and I was reminded of you! (imo, far too early to have an idea of the year. 2019 had a killer opening week then fell asleep for a while.)

    Twisted DL

Forgot until Books post that I had Durst. According to the post in Page 1, I don't have Russell Bishop yet. So Durst out, Bishop in, thanks.

    Robert Durst

Bloody hell. I guess he wasn't taking the piss then!
  22. , Paul Arland was a magician from the time period who specialised in magic tricks involving fish. Modern magicians sometimes reference him as one of their forbearers but I don't know if any of his stuff was ever recorded.

    Deathrace 2022

The rate at which Banana seems likely to win this one, and you did last year, is really putting a dent into my theory that the Deathrace is best won by being a jammy fucking git! Which is entirely what I owe both titles to. In fact, the first one, I pipped @Death Impends at the post, and she responded by kicking my ass in pretty much every single deadpool in the last 6 years as revenge!

    Derby Dead Pool 2022

My criteria for my own team in these particular cases is "would my parents bring them up in conversation without my starting it?" Which is yes for Phelan and yes for Dr Granger but no on pretty much all the other ones. My own singular version of the Clapham Bus. Also, I have only just twigged I am older than Granger. Thought she was late 30s. Time bloody flies.

    Comedians & Comedy Writers

tbf he's better known over here now than he was a decade ago due to How I Met Your Mother (which was a surprisingly good sitcom, but his is a voice only role), and the US Masked Singer getting shown en masse over here last year when the UK version turned out so popular (FAO LFN, no, I can only get Michael Owen this year, my ear for voices is clearly shite). But that's by comparison, not massively well known. I vaguely recall Full House being one of the Sky offerings, though we never watched it. Obviously a far bigger name in America but an "Oh yeah the name vaguely rings a bell" one for me thanks to HIMYM above.
