So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

Right, excuse the geek talk for 2 seconds, everyone else... Yeah, Eric Saward is a shit writer. Warriors of the Deep, where he talks up peace while slaughtering two entire species? Who was the script editor on that bollocks? Oh, yeah, Eric Saward. PERTWEE? With the karate and the thumping folk? A pacifist? It's like calling John Steed a pacifist, because he doesn't carry a gun. I know Guardian types like to think of the character as pacifist, but it's more someone who'd prefer a non-violent solution if possible, but is willing to fuck your shit up otherwise. Right, geek talk over.... Yeah, hard serious SF is fucking tedious. imo, of course. Dune, 2001 and all that. Yawn. Anyhow, Capaldi at 60 is too young for LFN.

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

Changes depending on the writer. Jodie Whittaker and the other new regulars were good. The dialogue and pacing were shite. As usual, Chris Chibnall tends to be the worst thing about any script by Chris Chibnall, but the actors did their best, and I hear better writers are on board in a few weeks. 8.2 million viewers overnight btw (ie before Iplayer and On Demand gets added on) - excellent for British drama in 2018.
  3. LA MUERTA 12/50 6th October 2018 When the voters of this forum picked opera singer Montserrat Caballe for the 2018 Crowdsourced list, your honourable host wondered what they were thinking. Well, it turns out to be yet another case of What the hell Does he know, as Caballe has died to provide the list with its twelfth success of the year. Montserrat had a career in opera which stretched over 50 years, and saw her in demand in Europe and in Carnegie Hall. This high demand appeared to continue well into her 80s with the tax authorities in Spain. In the UK, she was probably best known for her duet with the brilliant Freddie Mercury. Barcelona reached 2nd in the UK Singles Charts in 1987. Caballe, who was 85, had been in poor health for some time, and so was selected in 33rd position by voters.

A great sacrifice. You watched it so we didn't need to.

If he makes it, imo. Yeah, we should think of the real victim here: Spade Cooley, reading the 2019 DDP entries.

    World War II Veterans

If yer fussed... since we're in a civilised country, every Birth record from 17-something or other is all in the same database you can check online for free (though it costs to order the actual certificates obv) if you just wanted to know years of folks birth. Obv if they had a name like, say, Duncan Campbell, not so helpful free...

His oldest child - the aforementioned Conscientious Objector - was born in 1922. If not for those German POWs risking their life, my entire branch of the family tree wouldn't exist. Funny thing, perspective!

    World War II Veterans

None of my family served in WW2. WW1 produced such a wipeout that pretty much all of them were too old or too young. My uncle was a conscientious objector and went to prison instead. (He was a great man, no longer with us.) Another uncle would have been the right age, only he was allowed to join up in 1917 and died in action aged 12 or 13. My great-grandfather was gassed and shot and left for dead during WW1, but rescued by a POW stretcher party. These facts are in the wrong order, but are linked.

*hides* PS I stand by what I told TMIB in 2014 and last year. Future of the games a rolling stock Committee of people who can do various bits and bobs. Asking one person to do all the tasks and their real life job KO's most folk, as great a job as TMIB and Spade have and are doing.

You can't. The years not on the Wayback Machine had to be reconstructed from scratch using the Who's Dead page, TMIB's notes and this forum. Which is why no one is insane enough to have tried that before.

Bit of a live update from the commentary on Bayern v Ajax in the Champions League, as one of his friends did a celebration for him. Nouri is apparently "getting better, thankfully" despite having "recently been in a coma".

Ok, so someone we'll call J Russ (nah, too obvious, Joey R) has been asking what the longest "runs on top of the DDP" were, because apparently his side did OK in the Derby pool this year. This did make me think about the actual DDP leadership lineage however, as whenever it comes up, someone asks "Oh isn't this, say, Odstock's first time on top in 4 years?" or what not. Now, this is a nearly impossible task, for a number of reasons. Who picked who in 1996 is entirely lost, so we lose any changes at the top at the very start, and indeed, who fucking picked a 7 year old... Other times, the obit came in some time after the person died, which nobbles at least one Odstock lead at one point, but while some are spottable via forum/website, most of those pre...2005 or so are lost in the mists of time. I also searched for some "remembered" runs at the top, only to find they don't appear to have actually existed. I'm also pretty sure there are "1 week wonder" runs missed out here or there, but they can be edited in later... DDT has taken the lead at the top of the Derby Dead Pool 13 different times. From what I can see, only 3 women have ever led the DDP. 23 Deathlist forum members have led the DDP (DDT, Death Impends, Joey Russ, Drol, Capn Chorizo, Bert, Spade Cooley, RadGuy, Maryport, Gcreptile as Shameless, Esturian Float, Octopus of Odstock, Harrymac, Garn, Godot, Toast, Canadian Paul, Rude Kid, Miser, Going Underground, The Man in Black, Football Fan, and Rotten Ali) but only 5 of those have won. Survivors

Pre-internet, innit. Look at Bette Davis showing up post-death because none of them read the newspaper that day. So instead of research*, basically a lot of "not seen X on TV in some time" and so and so must be quite old now. Hence Clive Dunn. Anyhow remember that in the days before mass internet use, the points for Roy Rogers in the DDP only got added in 1999 when they found out. As in, died in July 1998, mega movie star Rogers. Miss the 10 seconds on the news or the wee paragraph in a newspaper and...well. *Yeah, I know...
