Deathlist Dreaming
msc replied to harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Earlier, vividly recalled having a debate on here with @YoungWillzabout Norman Fowler dying today and his contributions to health care in the UK. Away to do some work, and it's only now, after checking what age Fowler must have been ,that I realise the Tory grandee is in fact still alive, and this whole forum conversation was a dream during the night. -

Possibly? tbh the sock/alt conversation was going on for a while in Time Added, I was just making my usual smart alec comment. If anyone else goes for "I Am Not a Sock" before my lazy arse self ever does though, I'll be pissed!
-
Drol's Immortals cannot die. Only the actors who play them!
-
I often joke to DI about starting an alt on here called I Am Not A Sock, and get the internet equivalent of the Paddington Bear hard stare in return.
-
He's liked a few hundred of mine but I don't mind pretending to be popular on a niche internet forum tbh.

Ray Dorset (Mungo Jerry) made another appearance on The Heritage Charts to introduce a version of Alright Alright Alright. Looked and sounded very good, appears to have put his heart issues behind him for now.. Suzi Quatro also showed up looking exactly like how you'd expect a 73 year old Suzi Quatro to look. Her voice is a bit gone but she can still hit notes I blatantly never could.

Actually not picked by looks of it?
-
Yeah he looked very frail at Christmas talking about Jimmy Stewart iirc. One of Sky's better talking head experts on their various documentaries this decade.
-
Yes, he was looking very frail lately. DDP pick for my notable oldies team.
-
Real skill, running the country. Yeah I'd like that to turn up yesterday, too!

Note that it's market value too. Dermot Murnaghan left the BBC for Sky because Sky were able to double his salary. But Sky and other non-BBC organisations are not required to publish salaries. Kay Burley is on circa 450-500k a year, which is higher than all BBC presenters bar Gary Lineker and Zoe Ball. (And Lineker yes is a massive outlier even in sports punditry, that I can see, but I suspect it's like Jonathan Ross before him. They're paying for his presenting jobs AND for his connections in the sports world and ability to convince folk to do interviews, documentaries etc for the BBC. Ross used to get shitloads because they were paying him to present and also his production company which made shows for the BBC.) Is 400k+ a year too much to present the news? Possibly. But according to the star salaries list from last week, all of the BBC's news anchors could leave for a rival and get a significant pay rise! PS What I got from this is that, by the standards of their peers, Kirsty Wark and Clive Myrie are significantly underpaid for the amount of work they do. I suppose it doesn't matter when you get 250k a year, mind you...

I had to go double check this because you know, a few years have passed since, but yes, my memory did not cheat, not only was Clijsters health and death mentioned a lot on this forum, but he was a DDP hit back in 2009! When the host of the DDP was a certain Mr Octopus of Odstock!

More that its 40 years since The Five Doctors, not 20! Tom Baker was for much of his life a functioning alcoholic. He cut down the drink and fixed his diet around the late 90s and that's almost certainly added about 20 years to his life, but he is probably on borrowed time now. It'll be sad when he goes (he IS Doctor Who after all) but I'm glad he's got these extra years to bury all his old hatchets and issues with old colleagues and become a happier, healthier old man.
-
20th anniversary of The Five Doctors?
-
Superstar's anger at innocuous forum phrasing suggests blood pressure issues to me. One to watch for deadpoolers imo.
-
Watching the Dolly the Sheep documentary, Sir Ian Wilmut (now 79), the "father" of Dolly, has advanced Parkinsons now which "will significantly shorten his life". One to watch, obit certainty.

Following in The Goons footsteps. Peter Sellers 1925-80 Michael Bentine 1922-96 Harry Secombe 1921-2001 Spike Milligan 1918-2002 They've also followed in that firstly the mercurial "haunted by demons" one died far too young (Cook/Sellers), then the seemingly healthiest of the three took unexpectedly terminally ill (Moore/Bentine), then there were two left, one with more health issues than the other, only for the other one to decline more quickly after a batch of illnesses (Miller/Secombe). Meanwhile the oldest one that had all the health scares in life outlives the rest (Bennett/Spike). irc Betty White was the oldest Golden Girl but Rue (the youngest) died after Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty.

Alan Bennett on BBC4 tonight looking and sounding ready for his DL debut. I've seen healthier hands on skeletons. Still mumbling along but I had to put subtitles on to make him out. About two years left tops imo, reminds me of my grandfather in his last year.
-
To be honest I haven't read his books. That said, I am still in favour of more writers on the Deathlist!
-
Why do you think he hasn't retired?
-
He should be on the list but this is him holding on to replace as many of Benedict's henchmen with his own. He's quite keen on his successor not coming from the right wing pro-Benedict side of Vatican politics.
