Right, wake up from a few hours sleep, and there's 5 new teams to add! Must be Hogmanay! So I'll send off my own DDP teams and sort those out ASAP.

Charlotte Rae has been covered several times by the Daily Mail this decade, for opening up about her alcoholism, for her sadness when family members died, and they reviewed her autobiography. I'd put her Qualifying Obit chances at around 99%, with that 1% being she dies on the same week as, say, Donald Trump nukes everyone or the Queen dies, or Theresa May finds Boris Johnson accidentally made Jeremy Corbyn PM via an arcane 14th century word of mouth law...

Ok, so with 2017 nearly history, how do you rate your success (or lack of) in the various deadpools you took part in? Hartlepool Deadlypool - Marked improvement on previous years. Never going to win with RadGuy's 150 points pre-January 1st, but a likely top 5 finish is nothing to be sniffed at. B+ Hare's Pool - Lots of people died, though for a lot of them, my belief in their ability to fight illness long and hard was practically the kiss of death. Choice and luck is very important here. B- Deathrace - Finished before I'd even noticed it'd started. D. Death by Numbers - Lead for a bit, likely losing to Gcreptile. Unlucky in that Yahoo take down their obits after X amount of time, but then, that's what you get for picking no mark no names. A- Alt Obits - First time in, top ten finish. Could have gone worse. Completely overestimated the fame threshold, given some of those getting QO for it! B Scavenger Hunt - If I'd actually taken my specialist subject of the 5 (Doctor Who!) seriously, the game would have ended long ago and I'd spared everyone the long wait. F, as result. DDP 1. Pan Breed - Picked too many obscure non-obiting folk, ignored too many gift horses, and chucked the likes of Steve Hewlett for Anna Holmlund on Hogmanay. There is talk of bad luck elsewhere, but the team did as it deserved. C- 2. Here's Who You Could Have Won - looked like beating my main team until Gord Downie's death. A rag tag bunch of obscure programmers, musicians and the like which has done well above expectations to finish with 80+ points. B+ 3. Not the List of the Missed - Just a daft bit of theme team fun. Got 1 success from 20 names, and amusingly, the actual List of the Missed is full of names rejected from its shortlist. Well, that's sods law for you... C

CROWDSOURCED Deathlist of course. I've been up too long today. Hah.

No new articles for much of 2017, even his die hard fans are beginning to lose faith in any new Clive James stuff now. Surely he's 24 hours and a bit off returning to the Deathlist.

Roger Moore being a huge miss for the Deathlist was a big one until someone evil put up the entire voting record for the 2017 Deathlist, in which not a single point had been given to the former Bond.

Yep in about 24 hours the complaints will start! "They missed X?" "I can't believe they missed X either!" "All this talk of X. What about the letter Q? That got snubbed too!"

So, question: is the annual Deathlist New Years chat around the reveal of the new Deathlist 50 happening, and if so, how, given we don't have a chat function anymore? iirc (and i probably don't), DI set up some chat thingy last Hogmanay?

It's an evolution of sorts. There was a deadpool. It got won with 20 points once. Then there was Ali, who used early number crunching, but couldn't upset the "pick all the old dying dudes" people under the standardised 5 points per hit system. Then the rules changed to what we know today. Then DDT showed up, with his ability to sniff out those about to snuff. (Is it good research skills, or is he actually the Reaper? I prefer the latter explanation, his off years in the DDP are meant to put us off the trail..) Then Spade came along: equally good research game, but with more specialist know how (ie what papers obit what types of celeb, how to look for folk off the radar entirely) and blew away the rest of the field. So the rest of the field decide to learn from Spade... Now we're waiting for someone to take the next step and outperform all the Spade clones. Which is a bit of a nuisance for those of us who just twigged how to get to 90 points when that's no longer enough!

I think people should be wise and pick all 3 to be on the safe side.

It really was one of those "little chance of seeing 2018, but just in case" Deathrace picks. It happens.
