Only Famous For Being Ill And Dying

Iirc me and @gcreptile and you (?) decided her fame passed the threshold. She did present a BBC documentary after all.

    Curse Of The Eurovision

From the ones I heard yesterday, I quite liked this one, but that probably sums me up tbh. Wont see Semi-final one tonight because some daft football team are playing at the same time, whoever they are...

All of this. One of those known for playing iconic terrifying roles who was actually by all accounts lovely off camera. One of those few reported deaths which are genuinely upsetting to see. RIP.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2024

Roger Ordish showed up on TV this week talking Eurovison, 84 shortly and looking ancient. Apparently he once managed to convince executives he was the Albanian entry for Eurovision (in the 1960s when Albania wasn't in Eurovison) by putting on a wig and speaking in Russian. As the producer of Fry and Laurie, Parkinson and the Paul Daniels show, he'd already get a QO but "Jimmy Savile's producer" makes him an 1000% cert lock QO.

It is the 99th birthday of Laurie Webb and apparently he is still keeping active! Incidentally, Patricia Prior (Webb's Mrs Ollis in The Three Doctors) is still alive and 94 now.

    Sir David Attenborough

Picture for all those sensible folk who didn't watch. Three points. 1. Yes, he looks old now compared to how David Attenborough used to look. 2. He looks and sounds incredible next to nearly every single other 97 year old male in history. 3. Get him back on the list ASAP anyhow.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2024

US TV is as small a world as UK TV! Trying the first episode of Cheers as its on Channel 4s terrible On Demand service. Recognised Diane's one episode only fiancée instantly. To imdb.... He's the guy who kills his wife in Columbo classic A Friend in Deed, with Richard Kiley as the corrupt police chief! He was also in seemingly everything from The West Wing to Manimal. Manimal! Michael McGuire - apparently he's been in nearly everything and is still alive aged 89. Hasn't been mentioned on this forum before, a Labour MP with the same name was, but he's living, and should get a UK obit with that CV.

    Comedians & Comedy Writers

Until earlier this year when @Death Impends pointed out my error, I thought Ray Jay Johnson was a Simpsons joke about dull US TV comics, not an actual real life act they were spoofing on!

To be fair he is older than all five DL hits so far. Should never have been dropped.
  16. Oh and in other news, the Tories are getting a right thumping!
  17. Very. And I live here. Clorox's right - it gets drummed into kids from an early age to pick one side and live up to all the stereotypes of it. I'm staunch atheist yet have experienced anti-Catholic prejudice solely because of who my family was. (And ditto mrs msc, whose from a Presby family - I'd joke we're a Joan Lingard family but actually both sides got on like a house on fire like most non fucking idiots in Glasgow tend to!) It got to the point where when folk used to ask me who I preferred of the Old Firm, I knew it was coming from Celtic fans so would say Rangers specifically to wind them up. But I can't stand either side. My family have a long history of Partick Thistle supporting, but as a family of orthodox Catholic socialists with a fair number of veterans and royalists (I'm neither), we are a very contrarian bunch! But yeah, its really stupid how seriously people take this. I remember a guy trying to break into my primary school to attack the kids. At the time we laughed at him tbh, but the adults justifiably freaked out. The weans even had prejudice shoved in their face, though they turned to the person in question and told them they should be ashamed of themselves. I was a proud Dad! (Oh and TQR, believe me, when anyones shoving sectarian shite in my kid's face I can get really fucking grumpy in a hurry, understatement...) Life isn't so binary. I'm not a royalist, but I liked the Queen, I have sympathy for Charlie (he seems well meaning but thick) and I respect Anne, and that's more of them than I can say for the current government! A Head of State is a Head of State, doesn't really bother me if their a monarch or a President, its the same power and money going towards the top 1% no matter. The issues's the inequality, not the type of leader. Oh and England's a lovely place. If Scotland was to get independence, I'd be on the side advocating strong relations with the neighbours. Between England's financial power and Scotland's likely position as an energy creator this century, it would only be beneficial to both sides. I get the romantic notion of independence, but the SNP tend to screw the pooch every time on the fine details (cough currency cough). Had they gone down the Devo Max powers bit by bit route proposed a decade ago, they'd be a lot closer to Canada status now than they are. But, as Douglas Hurd once said of the DUP, the trouble is they never know when they're winning! PS The whole "other country" homeland stuff, I don't get. I was born in Scotland, live in Scotland, will die in Scotland, nowt Irish about me, bar ancestry. I'm not anti-heritage, just I don't personally get that line of it. That said, any Celtic/Rangers fans who cheer Ireland/England over Scotland in sport (as does happen) to troll the other side can fuck off. Oh yeah, Thistle are in a must win game tonight to get in the playoffs. Fuck the Old Firm, mon the Jags, I say.

Betty Driver Memorial Soapstar Superstar Thread

There's a clear difference between getting actual treatment in a world renowned cancer hospital, and just claiming you had cancer but never getting treatment (Buell) for it. We've seen folk make full recoveries from bad situations, misdiagnosis's, and folk who last longer than expected by smoking lots of weed, painting and having outdoor sex (RIP Brackers you mad bastard). We've also seen folk die stunningly quickly from treatable cancers. People are strange, no one really knows how they'll react to treatment till it happens. Key point in the Keltie case is it appears to be experimental treatment that has worked in this case far better than expected. We don't know what that means long term, though.
