It was recorded this year. The first one is up on Iplayer already. To be blunt, by most people at 95 years old standards, she looks great. And she's recorded about 40 minutes of this (over several sessions by looks of it but still). By Patricia Routledge's standards, however, she's clearly declined a fair bit since her Channel 5 interview in 2022. More pauses in sentences, lost weight compared to then, clearly faded slightly as the reminisces went on. Reminded me of several elderly relatives in their twilight. Not at deaths door imo but I'd keep her on the list tbh.

Wouldn't bet on that if they need to drop 21 people!

Tbf the obits for every single name in the current format only continued because Spade said "I bet you can't come up with those puns for five hundred people" and I am a contrary shit.

That would be a sad loss. Director of some forum favourites like episodes of Thriller and Armchair Thriller. However, his and the late David Mittons work on Tugs was revolutionary in TV terms. They invented ways of shooting model work around waterways, stimulating weather effects and pioneered a whole bunch of camera techniques for versimilitude that didn't only get taken up by other kids shows (Thomas benefitted heavily from it) but also Hollywood films and beyond. An important SFX behind the scenes name.

It's a BBC show from 2018 with a different name. For what it's worth, the other three (Eileen Atkins is the fourth) were concerned about Joan Plowrights health back then!

This means the only one of the five Villanos still alive is the one that nearly died in WCW (IV). Life can be silly like that!

I can answer the why. When I co-ran the DDP we tried to make it as democratic as possible and a whole bunch of players asked for it. The list of qualifying obits was expanded greatly as people who ought to score under the rules (actors, Nobel prize winners) weren't and this got a lot of complaints. (Indeed, you might recall a Carrie Hamilton situation which cost you a third DDP title a number of years ago.) This is why the Radio Times and Economist are there despite never producing a necessary QO. Because one day they feasible might. Anyhow it was a correction to the rather stricter QO rules a predecessor put in place where DDP picks could get BBC obits and not get a qualifying obit. I am unsure as to the success of the Yahoo qo loophole. I am aware it has been claimed to be abused (though imo that's a ffbi issue) and I have no say in future rule changes, thankfully. However if you were to show me a list of DDP hits that only got yahoo obits and there was politicians, actors or scientists on that list then I would stand by it doing exactly what it was intended to do.

Tbf the 110 Club confuses me because from what I can see, this Charlotte lady lived in good health and active until her 104th year when she took ill, only to make a recovery and remain active and lucid until she died in her sleep aged 114. Seems to me like a long healthy happy life where you can enjoy it right up to the moment you pop off peacefully is basically the jackpot.
-
Listening to a recent interview with Ric Flair. He was asked how he's still alive "with all his health issues" (apparently he forgot who Charlotte was during a recent illness) and he said he hadn't a clue. That makes two of us.

I'd much rather Mujica was exaggerating his health and Fujimori was the one dying for real but yeah, this feels like a matter of months.

Political Discussions And Ranting Thread

tbh I had no idea he made a speech, and am enjoying the ability to go entire weeks without having to check if the government have fucked up my income yet again (like the last lot). More boring politicians, please. -
As it was never mentioned on here, am I the only person who missed the news William Shatner announced earlier this year he had recently recovered from Stage IV melanoma? Because I feel like one of you would have mentioned that. Anyhow he seems in decent nick for his age now after immunotherapy.
-
He's been in remission for about a year? Hah, well that was me fooled for the DDP!
-
I unironically loved Sid. Easily my favourite person ever to attempt to murder Arn Anderson.
-
Good find @Ulitzer95 on James Marcus though sad news as he was a good actor.
-
Puts me fourteen points behind the leader with four months to go but not sure there's enough differential picks left to make the difference.
-
Good DDP pick though.

Not a death and actually a bit old news now, but this came up in my feed and I knew a number of folk round here would be interested. Willie McLean (not the MIA guy from the 1930s) is 89 nowadays so a possible contender for Octopus's oldest thread before too long. Especially as he was born in Lanarkshire where 89 years for a man is equivalent of 500 years in normal humans. Anyhow, McLean was a journeyman footballer who went on to enjoy several spells as a manager in Scotland, most notably at Motherwell, where he took them to 4th in the Premier League, as big an achievement back then as it would be today. And at the end of last year, someone went and interviewed him and put it on YouTube! Worth a mention also as he's a QO cert (Motherwell plus being Wee Jim's brother), isn't off the radar, and seemingly hasn't been mentioned on this forum before, according to the search engine. (Unless its been avalanched by all the mentions of Don McLean in the Hurt/Heal game.)

It's a cliche to say that buses were run better by the council here but I'm old enough to remember that and they bloody were. The roads and most of the rails are there, they just need the will from those in charge...still waiting for that bit.

Happy birthday Time.
