Grim, Welshman and a few others (Harry at one point at least, the former poster Mr Stats too) meet up each December, get very drunk and put together the list. Grim has been the public, err, face of this for the last 20 years at least. When the forum started, DL committee decisions were discussed more commonly (there's an amusing argument over why Princess Margaret got lost in 2002 somewhere on the forum archives) but less so with time.

Grim's the boss!
-
I do expect him to be sent to some godforsaken place like America tbh.

Must admit, the Paddington as Grim Reaper meme on Twitter due to all the Paddington/Queen pictures has raised a chuckle! Anyhow, Wombles, Paddington, that's like asking me to pick just one Dr WHo!

Look at other heads of state of the world - Trump, Putin, all those African strong men Drol updates us on - or historic British ones (like every single Tudor) and 70 years as a mostly harmless insignificance seems worthy of praise, due to it being so damn unusual. Her public legacy is rather widespread decolonisation. Her private legacy is impossible to know until historians are allowed access to the files. And that may be a century yet. Tony Benn's story suggests she was quite pro-active behind the scenes, but to what extent and for what purpose none of us will know in our lifetimes. You ever seen Mr Smith Goes to Washington? Idealist goes to the Senate, is railroaded by how obstructionist and corrupt it is. Great film, the politics are fluffied for Hollywood but Jimmy Stewart's in good form. Anyhow, that reminds me of Obama's Presidency. Lots of great ideas, crushed by the US political system. Which makes Biden's actually getting shit done all the more surprising, to me at least! (And some of Obama's actual achievements got deleted by his successor.) Anyhow, the most significant death of 2022 was obviously Bernard.

Point of order - meeting Boris Johnson is a happy ending? Tbh I think she went the way my other gran went. Health complication in the morning, family told to come see her ASAP as she didn't have long left, only to get there and find that she'd taken a sudden turn for the worse and died while folk were on route. Happens all the time.

Campaigning did officially stop, briefly, due to Diana's road safety failure. The BBC website did exist in 1997 but the News section became more of a thing in 1998. Here's the earliest example on the Wayback Machine. Top stories - Clinton's Sex Life, space adventures, a shooting in Northern Ireland, and people taking the government to court. Could be any other day in the 90s! "A drama like Jonathan Creek isn't what you'd expect from creator of One Foot In The Grave, David Renwick." - Tell me you haven't seen One Foot without telling me you haven't seen One Foot. "Can you imagine what life will be like in the year 2010?" No, no I cannot.

Btw the top read BBC stories thing is based on your region. The UK one is still Ukraine and lots of the Queen.
-
Shows how quickly the internet took over in 2003. John Ritter was still a TV star here with 8 Simple Rules, but confirmation of his death took a week or two to reach the print papers. By December, Earl Hindman from Home Improvement made the papers a day after his death.
-
Hmm, internationally perhaps but that was always likely. Currently the top 10 most read BBC news stories today - 7 are on the death of the Queen, 1 is about Brexit, 1 is about Ukraine, and 1 is about Darius dying from sniffing glue.

Jimmy seems unlikely to be able to travel, and the FBI seem unlikely to allow Trump to travel, but Clinton and Bush will presumably be there. Oh, and Obama. Forgot him.
-
This thread always reminds me of BCAlum.

Many thanks! At least that nobbles my "why can't I recognise this presumably famous politician?" annoyance.
-
Here he is. He was only on screen for about 2 seconds at 41.16 into the event, so that's the best screenshot I can get.
-
Legit thought you'd seen it and would go "Oh it was Lord so and so, remember he was Education Secretary?" I'll have a look for a pic.

One for @Ulitzer95 most likely. Terrible with recognising old folk on TV without help. At King Charles's proclamation earlier, any idea who the old guy in the wheelchair Emily Thornberry helped move out of the room was? My mind went blank at the time and social media is providing no help.

John Astin is def famous enough. Never mind the Addams Family, he was The Riddler! He was in Eerie Indiana! He got bumped off in Night Gallery! Absolutely an "Oh that guy" recognisable face. He's also only 92, so it's not like if he was going to make it, he would have by now - time yet. Lee Grant was a 70s Columbo killer, so again, clearly a notable person. Roger Corman, I'm surprised there's any debate over. His films have been regular schedule fillers on UK TV for the past 60 years. Usually the same ones, with Vincent Price. I used to watch his films on Saturday omnibuses as kids, and my dad used to do the same when he was a kid. Proper big name, imo.

As you only marked points off, how many people is that in joint 1st?
-
Aye you can always trust a Yugoslavian war criminal in a deadpool.
-
It's folk famous in America who seem to get the big numbers.
-
I hear they were really buzzed off about the news.
-
Well if you knew Hitler Two before the world did I'd hope you'd have acted on the pre knowledge!
-
Honest answer, no. And look at how fast pro-royalist critics (I don't mean republicans) of Charles are u-turning opinions for a reason why. The show goes on. (Also after one big change there usually isn't the appetite for another big one for a while.)

Top work, friendly admin!
-
Yes, but after 90 mins I really wanted to know a frontpage fact so loaded up the Wayback Machine, got the answer, then found the forum was back. Sods Law successfully activated!
