Sandy Gall well enough to write a biography of Afghan warlord Ahmad Shah Massoud.

I wonder if the late foreman hummed Tennessee native Johnny Cash's spookily prescient Five Feet High and Rising, before being swept away to his untimely demise?

Afghanistan's Vice President Amrullah Saleh has declared himself rightful leader of the country and vowed to fight on against the Taliban, saying he will not surrender to them or flee "under any circumstances". That sort of fighting talk might make him a good deadpool pick before too long

I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole last night reading up on incel culture, something which seems to have passed me by so far. I'm still not convinced that these people qualify as 'terrorists', but I do fear that there will be more of this to come in the future, with our growing legion of internet addicted young men who have untreated mental health issues and unrealistic expectations of sex, based on what they have viewed online I also read the Reddit output of the killer. A litany of sexual frustration and appalling grammar. -
I'm really sad to hear about Nanci Griffith. I saw her perform at Glastonbury in 1997 (which was memorably muddy!) and she was brilliant. A tragedy that her and John Prine have both gone within a year.

Yes Sykes ploughs quite a folky furrow, so she ticked that box. I have failed to include all four in the past, but do try. Also there's a dreadful gender imbalance in deadpooling and I like to include women in my squads. Looking forward to my Boxing Day binge PS congrats Reptile and thanks Joey for running the show.

A cheerful article from today's Observer, citing research suggesting economic growth will cease in ten years and civilization will have collapsed by 2040.

Yes, I also wondered if both parties were scanning the nest for passion killing cameras or other recording devices before Gina fell on Matt's sword, or summat.

Close, but no cigar. 75:84 I think. 'Tis a rare and special thing to make that thread. -

Frith's cheery book about cricketing suicides (I thought it was called By Their Own Hand?) had a forward written by Peter Roebuck, who later jumped to his death from a hotel balcony. -
The Living End rocket into the top twenty. Can one of the more statistically inclined let me know my all time hits tally?

As an antidote to the doom and gloom surrounding this worldwide festival of death, I thought it might be nice to look on the positive side and forecast the date when there are zero deaths attributable to Corona recorded in the UK. There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel and I predict the date when no virus deaths occur will be July 1st. Over to you. The winner will be the person who gets closest to the date (obviously). There is no prize, as achievement is its own reward. In the event of the virus mutating and killing ever increasing amounts of humanity on a daily basis until we're all extinct, there will be no competition winner.

Long distance legend Ron Hill, who went on to set up his own sportswear label, dead at 82. -
Yes, me too. About time that young upstart Remco was taken down a peg or two. It's Bernal's to lose, but I predict Lanky Hugh Carthy will do something special in the mountains.

I thought Steve Earle wrote Galway Girl. Truly a great man, and not even ginger. -
There was a great article in the Guardian the other day about how we can look forward to a post covid renaissance, as and when we overcome the pandemic. The summers of 2023 and 2024 in particular were forecast to be extra hedonistic, with packed events, increased spending and sexual freedom high on the agenda. So I thought I'd make a thread about it. How is life going to change post covid? I don't think things will ever be the same again, nor do I believe that is a bad thing. My prediction is that homeworking will become the norm, that cannabis will be legalised as a tax raising measure and that we will inadvertently discover a cure for the common cold in our efforts to cure covid. Trust in central government will be greatly diminished and young people, with very good reason, are going to rebel on a grand scale Might liberal attitudes even cause deadpooling to become more socially acceptable?

We all need to do our bit and each drink 124 pints of beer this summer to save the pub trade.

Not often we get to report an execution in this thread, but Egyptian Coptic Orthodox monk Wael al-Saad Tawadros has been hanged for the murder of his Bishop, who he bludgeoned to death in 2018.
