I had this strange idea/dark thought that Jimmy Carter may decide to go for one last ambitious piece of foreign diplomacy by contacting the Islamic State and offering himself in exchange for the last remaining western hostage, John Cantlie, agreeing to being beheaded on camera in his place. Everyone would win here; IS would have a big name, representing everything they stand against, to decapitate rather than some unfortunate photographer, Cantlie would get his freedom and Carter’s suffering would be brought to a rapid conclusion, while at the same time securing his legacy in a big way - something all ex-presidents obsess about. Thanks for listening.

I'm sad to report the death of Travis Linton Galleymore, a well known Big Issue seller in Devon, who supplemented his income by spending considerable periods of time upside down with his head in a bucket. I met and chatted to Travis several times (when he was the right way up) and he was a lovely man. He had emigrated from South Africa to the UK to improve his prospects, but things didn't work out for him and pride stopped him from returning home. He struck me as a poor, lost soul and while I am upset to hear of his untimely death, I'm not that surprised. His death was covered by The Independent and there is footage Travis suffering for his art in Exeter High Street here. -

On that basis, Warren Mitchell would fit the bill, he's British and has looked ancient since the sixties. Yet somehow he doesn't seem worthy. It's a difficult one as I think DL benefited in a strange sort of way from worshipping at the totem-pole of the omnipresent deity that was Clive Dunn, but, as you say, he is just irreplaceable.

Michael C Gross, creator of the Ghostbusters logo amongst over things has given an interview to the Daily Telegraph. He is on my DDP team as he has terminal cancer, however the article doesn't touch on this at all and tells us that he is now working in California as a nature photographer.

I don't agree, I'm afraid. His breathing seems quite laboured in this footage, probably meaning either his heart or lungs are failing him.

On this day in 1419 the First Defenestration of Prague occurred, when an enraged mob threw a judge and thirteen members of the council from the windows of the town hall. King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia apparently died of shock shortly after he was informed of these events. -

Strange goings on in LA, where the remains of a man called Jeffery Lash have been found decomposing outside his address. A search of his home revealed he was the owner of 1200 guns and six tons of ammunition. Meanwhile, Mr Lash's fiancee has provided police with the perfectly straightforward explanation that she believed he was

Rosaline Rowe, who became a world table-tennis champion in the 1950s, has died at the age of 82. She got obituaries in all of the broadsheets, which means it would be worth keeping her twin sister Diane in mind as she was also a table tennis world champion. A bit of googling found some research - albeit from 1948 - stating the average time which passes between the deaths of identical twin sisters over sixty is two and a half years.

Although not F1, Russell Phillips' fatal crash in 1995 takes some beating in the gore stakes. Grainy footage is available for MPFC's perusal on YouTube, but the camera-work doesn't do justice to the full horror of what unfolded.
