This year has been a bad year for the traditional baddy. Osama bin Laden, Colonel Gaddafi, and Kim Jong-il all gone. Hopefully we can squeeze in the Ayatollah before the 1st January.

Sky News has just reported that Kim Jong-il has died! Edit: Link - http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-19/kim-jong-il-north-korea-s-dear-leader-dictator-dead-at-70-yonhap-says.html

My attempt at an update. Any errors are regretted. you forgot to take John Forsythe off the 2007 list. He died last year Ah yes. I remembered he was still alive. I'll fix it.

A unique pick for the Theme Team "And Its Goodnight From Him...". Given that he fell down the stairs, I'd assume that's an unnatural death bonus? Unless it is deemed natural for 89 year olds to fall down stairs... -

It is interesting that the British Prime Minister makes a speech about "embracing Christianity" to deal with Britain's "moral collapse" on the same day Hitchens died. He's probably spinning already - even before they put him in the grave.

The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret died in the Golden Jubilee year. It would be some bad luck for the Queen if Prince Philip was the party pooper of the Diamond Jubilee.
-
Well this is a relief. Especially after all the fuss a few of us caused back in January when we discovered he wasn't on the list. This almost makes up for my premature Mubarak rant.

I'd sooner see the Ayatollah on the list - even if he were to survive 2012 and Heesters were to die.
-
Millions of people served during the First World War. She is only notable because she has outlived the rest of them due to her advanced age. It would, therefore, be against the unwritten rules to put her on the list because she is famous only for being old (and therefore ill if you count 'extreme old age' as an illness). Thats probably the reason why the likes of Henry Allingham and Harry Patch were never put on the list.

Brooke Astor was more well known that Johannes Heesters - and more likely to get a suitable obit. At 108 (109 in 2012), I think Heesters would be the oldest candidate we've ever had.* *Except Ruby Muhammed, depending on her actual age (which I maintain, based on the evidence, was 10 years younger than stated).

Go Windsor! That was you, right? Err...no...honest: http://www.metro.co.uk/news/884716-father-of-fare-dodger-calls-for-assault-charge-after-son-is-thrown-off-train -
Some newspapers were reporting that Margaret Thatcher is 'open' to the idea of a state funeral: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/2011/12/12/margaret-thatcher-approves-plan-for-state-funeral-costing-at-least-2m-86908-23628665/

Try to dodge a train fare in Scotland: -
I hope the committee aren't that desperate. If they must go for a centenarian, they should go for Sir Nicholas Winton who turns 103 in May. He is also more likely to get an obit.

What about John McCririck? He's fairly obese...

I would hope Al-Megrahi may make a reappearance...and perhaps Doris Day.

Liz Smith, nana from the Royale Family, celebrates her 90th birthday today.

I agree with your choice of Jim Bowen. He strikes me as the kind of guy who could drop down dead tomorrow - much in the way of Bernard Manning.

I think my north-east corner is now experiencing what LG had earlier. To give you the short version - the dog won't be going out for a walk tonight... -
No need to be gay about it...

It actually seems more likely that the US influence is keeping him alive. Articles stated that he was to be executed "after the American's leave Iraq".
-
That's why they supposedly rushed Saddam's execution in December 2006. He would have turned 70 in April 2007.
