    Birthdays, Births, Anniversaries Etc...2006

It appears as though I missed a significant anniversary at the hands of Mother Nature, so... Congratulations Windsor!!! on a fine three-hundred-and-sixty-five-days'-worth of posting eloquence. Please do enjoy a Pimms from your vintage imitation royal mug on me.

Definitely you should Dan even if you are just a bullshitter. although claiming to be Dickie O's waiter would be a bizarre piece of bullshitting. Yes, I was thinking that young Dan might find himself in a spot of bother if his employers discovered he was posting the health status of their clients on the Internet. Something about Dan's email address being his guest name brought an air of falsehood to the whole thing...

A little known fact about this picture is that his boxers are actually a Magic Eye painting, if you stare long enough. Ahhhh and what is the picture then? a tiny penis. and two little balls Really? I saw Martha Stewart.

It might depend on your location. In Canada, one is very encouraged to be ____________-Canadian, to embody one's ancestral roots. It is therefore entirely standard for CP to refer to himself as Ukranian, as it's already a given that he's Canadian. For example, my mother's father's father came over on the boat from Holland to Canada. In Canada, this would legitimate me to claim Dutchness. So, if I were to get chatting to someone in a bar who was from Holland, it would be standard for me to say: "Oh! I'm Dutch!" and then to qualify it by explaining the ancestral lineage. Or, at least that's how it used to be, though I haven't lived in Canada for a while. Having just been back for a couple of months, I noticed how much more pride Canadians are taking in being Canadian. I think this might be because there is now a multitude of 2nd-generation Canadians. When I was in my teens, I felt quite strongly that there wasn't a sense of individuals' Canadian identity within the country. That's definitely changing, which I think is a good thing.

Similarer and similarer! One of my earliest memories was from the day that John Lennon was shot. They announced it on the CBC, and I remember my father being extremely upset about it. I still remember hearing the report. I was four.

What a balls up that was, eh? Geez! I think my favourite line of ITV commentary was, during the 2nd half, when the ref stopped (for some reason) rather abruptly, and the commentator said something along the lines of: "Wait! I think the ref's just been advised there are still three players on the pitch who haven't been booked yet." Commisserations to Mr Hein.

Isn't Rooney just a shaved chimp, or is that insulting to chimps? Shaved? I think not. Netherlands 3 - Portugal 1 (apologies to my brother-in-law )

Agreed, though I do think it's so easy for those of us watching from a birdseye view to be critical of close calls. Not for the first time, today as I was watching the games I wondered to myself why the world of football does not embrace technology and have a third ref "upstairs" whom the refs on the pitch can call on when needed. Granted ice hockey moves at a much quicker pace, and the object being scored with is much smaller. But they use video replay in cricket and, I believe, in rugby. Why not in football? Wouldn't it make for a better game allround? If the argument is purely that it'll slow the game down because of constantly "going upstairs" then as far as I'm concerned that's rubbish based on the following two points: #1 - it's been more-than-adequately demonstrated in other sports not to be the case; #2 - surely all of the appeals and all of the rolling around on the grass like sissies slows the game down even more. FIFA heed my call: time for football to move into the 21st century, that's what I say!
  19. Very much to my surprise - given that there were only five questions in this quizlet - this response is pretty damn accurate, and very suited to me. Roll on the sunshine!

Finally! A really excellent game of football has been played in this world cup. Argentina and Mexico were a true pleasure to watch; hopefully this was just a preview of greater things to come in the upcoming weeks.

S Korea v Switzerland was one of the better matches I've seen thus far. Seems to make a difference when the teams actually have a reason to try and win. My loyalties lie as follows*: 1. England 2. Netherlands Either of those two teams winning will be fine with me. *Canada has not been included for, er, obvious reasons.
