Speaking of curries etc., here is an Indian recipe for cabbage that is very very delicious. It comes from this cookbook: Buttered Smothered Cabbage (NB: "Buttered" refers to the texture of the cabbage, not to butter as an ingredient) 1 small cabbage (c. 2lbs) 2 tbsp ghee or light vegetable oil 1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 asafetida (optional) 1/4 tsp tumeric 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh ginger root 1 cup chopped fresh ripe tomato (1 large one) 2 green chilies, seeded and minced 2 tsp Kosher salt 1-2 tbsp coarsely chopped fresh coriander leaves Shred the cabbage into 1/4 inch-thick shreds. Heat ghee/veg oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan. When it is hot, add the cumin seeds. When they are browned (c 10 - 15 secs), add the asafetida if you are using it, then immediately add the cabbage. Sprinkle tumeric over the cabbage and saute, turning and tossing rapidly until the cabbage is wilted (c 5 mins). Add the ginger, tomato, and chillies and cook for another 5 mins. Add salt and one cup of hot water. Reduce heat to med-low and cook the cabbage, covered, for around 20 mins, until it is tender and the water has been absorbed. (Make sure to stir it often so that it doesn't stick to the pan.) Add the chopped coriander and stir it in. Serve! Yum!

You can't mind it too much, as you've now mentioned it twice on this forum.

Well mpfc, I would say that she does a reasonably good job of pursuing the investigation objectively. However, I would also say that she has a fairly low opinion about a lot of the experiments/research she discusses. Or maybe it's less a 'low opinion' and more 'skepticism'. Quite possibly both. With about five pages left to read, my impression is that she does not believe any of the existing research (aka the stuff she's looked into) is conclusive evidence of an afterlife/soul. Whether or not she believes that there actually is an afterlife/soul, well... she does not commit herself either way. -
He most certainly is/was! Big name here. They've even retired his jersey. He was a bit before my time. I confess to having never heard of him. What a bad Canadian I am. He was Wayne Gretzky before there was Wayne Gretzky.

Hm. Sounds me to like dr4g either fancies Michael, or in fact is Michael. Either way, welcome to the club!

As much fun as it would be to add to the berating of iain, I must change the course of this thread ever-so-slightly in order to wish Bou an extremely belated HAPPY LEAP-INTO-POST-TWUNTDOM! I can only grovel in gestures of apologetic grief in not being able to do so On The Day. Please feel free to blame my mother, for having crappy slow dial-up. Anyway, a message in honour of your Post-Twuntdom shall be winging its' way to you pronto! -
That happens whenever I go on holiday, perhaps if we both took the day off Mrs Thatcher might oblige us and snuff it? Perhaps if the three of us went elsewhere, we'd have a whole slew of successes?! Outside of DL success, I have no feelings whatsoever about Mr Profumo, but will wish him a somewhat belated Happy Eternity, wherever he now is... JP

Read Any Good Books Lately?

Am pleasantly surprised to find this thread revived, as I was recently thinking of posting in it. Thank goodness it hadn't been deleted as irrelevant... I am just finishing Mary Roach's latest contribution to Popular Science, entitled Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife, which is her sequel to Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavres, as aforediscussed in this thread. I find her latest book as well-written as her former, and given that I know her research on the former to be quite thorough, I am confident in her research of the latter. I enjoy her writing (even though she's a journalist); I find it both informative and entertaining as anything which falls under the rubric of "Popular" should be. This one's all about the various "scientific" tests which have been undertaken over the years, with the aim of discovering whether or not there is a soul. As I began this book, I found her writing ever-so-slightly OTT, but then as I got into it, I began to enjoy it more, and must admit that I find her writing style pleasurable to read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a general overview of the subject. As noted above, I trust her research, and would therefore also recommend the bibliography as, at least, a good starting point. -
Could someone please help me?! I'm still having this problem, though it would seem that everyone else can get in without a problem. Have I been banned from deadchat?
-
You leave my beard out of this; it took me weeks to get it just right.
-
Okay, I've obviously missed the boat here. I clicked on the deadcaht link, and got the password screen. I tried to input my password that I use to access the forum and the following message appeared: Invalid Username or Password. Please try again. So I thought that maybe I was supposed to register, so I did. I then tried to access the deadchat again, and it didn't work. Meanwhile, the front screen was showing that I was sitting in the deadchat room the whole time. Then my server crashed. I am confused, and am feeling less-than-deserving of my honourary anorak. (Which will go very nicely with the new DL knickers, btw.)

NICE!! And just in time for my birthday, too. Consider the knickers ordered!

Ah well, you know what they say about opinions...

I personally love cooking, and do so almost every day. Not only do I find it very relaxing, but there is usually something delicious to consume at the end. Also, I prefer to know what's in the food I'm eating and can therefore rarely bring myself to purchase pre-prepared items, as after I've read the ingredients I'm generally put off. With regard to wonton stuffing, it is as follows: ground pork - not too lean ginger - very finely chopped spring onions - also very finely chopped salt 1 egg for every lb-or-so of meat Mix it all up and hey-presto! I've also been informed that wontons are less about the stuffing, and more about the wonton wrappers. You should therefore never try to put too much meat in any one wonton. (PS. If you're interested in knowing about what goes in the wonton sauce, just let me know! It involves a particularly pleasant 'tongue-numbing' spice.)

diabolus - I was looking at the link you provided, and almost registered. And then I saw the part of the forum called Pixel Hell, which deals with "gore, death, disease, deformities, sick porn, oddities and more." Now, I can understand the first four topics being covered, but why on earth is "sick porn" included? Here you have a perfectly good site about death, and you have to go and ruin it by including porn; as if, somehow, the two topics are inseperable. There is a time and a place for porn, and I personally think that a site about death is neither the time nor the place. Drives me nuts! (Unless, of course, it is necrophiliac porn, in which case as least there's some justification for it being there.) Very disappointing.

Didn't want to. But it's on my birth certificate, so it can be proved. Hippos and Birdies, OoO! Hope you have a great one!

In a state of extreme procrastination, I decided to google my username once again, to see how it was fairing in the popularity charts. The top hits continue to be dominated by my counterparts: In Eternum, The Band. According to their website, they have a gig in High Wycombe coming up on March 4th - and I shan't be in the country to attend! What a shame.... However! During my foray into the murky google waters, I was... um... fortunate enough to be able to listen to one of their tracks - all 6:58 of it. Although I am the first to admit that I am not particularly savvy in the world of heavy metal/prog rock, I'm sure that this is top-notch stuff (please disregard the fact that the song's top ranking was 4,712, and it's current ranking is 23,590). I believe this track - The nigth; Tom of souls - was performed in collaboration with Charlotte Church and the Cookie Monster. It would also seem that Hanz and Franz made a vocal cameo at the end. In other news, I am very pleased to say that yours truly appears as the 7th and 8th google hits.

My goodness! What a thing to wake up to... Mr Fugit prancing around to The Mikado. Would never have pegged you as a G&S man, Tempus. Now I'm gonna have that bloody song in my head all day!

Hear! Hear! Although in the deadchat CP justified this point to me, I disagree with it. I may be naive and un-anorak deserving, but I can't imagine that the small number of threads falling into the category under debate would ever cause mass transit chaos on the DL site, regardless of the number of new members. The crappest of the irrelevant threads ge deleted anyway, so what's the issue here? I don't see how merging all the less-than-immediately-relevant threads into one giant thread would be a change for the better. Wouldn't it just get really random and confusing? Again I question the logic behind establishing standards/procedures/quality etc. Surely the fact that some threads fall to the bottom of the pile due to lack of posting is procedure/quality control enough. I would not be happy if I started a thread that I thought was relevant, only to have it deleted by some upstart. Case in point: I recently started a thread which I thought was relevant/appropriate. Turns out it was less so, and so it is currently drifting down towards the bottom of the pile. As far as I'm concerned, that's fine. Who knows, maybe some day it'll be more useful/relevant. Maybe not. I am willing to put myself at the mercy of the discriminating bunch that are the DL members. However, if said thread had been deleted, I might well have been really annoyed.
-
You keep a list? That strikes me as a bit obsessive, TF. ... and thus I descend into flippancy. Having been away from this thread to make myself a snack, I return not really remembering the point of the argument. Needless to say I defer to your expert opinion Mr Fugit. Unless it's about deleting threads, in which case I disagree vehemently.
-
It's not a question of "closing your eyes and pretending it's not there". My god, you're speaking about old threads as if they're crimes against humanity! Just leave 'em. If you don't want to read them, ignore them. Then, they're there if others do want to read them. Who knows, maybe one day they're regain relevance. Like the Don Knotts thread. The Don Knotts thread has always been relevant, that kind of thread most certainly shouldn't be deleted. You're only saying that because its relevance has come to the fore; he's died, therefore it is now relevant. If he had simply faded into obscurity for the next five years, you'd probably be arguing for its' deletion.
