    The Hartlepool Deadlypool

Dancing rodents! I'm still busy selecting worthy ream members. Still a few hours left. regards, Hein Ta. Admittedly the order is a bit, er, random... but I decided on the Zen method of order-picking. I have, in the past, successfully relied on the Zen method of finding my way to places for which I only have the sketchiest of directions, so fingers crossed!

    Derby Dead Pool 2007

Not entirely sure what you're all on about, but I just wanted to add my own two cents' worth and say that for the first time ever, I've submitted a DDP team - hurrah! I double-checked this year's teams and saw that there are several that did not score any points at all, so I feel that I will at least have some company down at the bottom of the league at the end of 2007. Guess I'm going to actually read this thread from now on... Happy New Year, folks!

    The Bible

Would somebody mind explaining this to me in words of one syllable or less? God good, sin bad? I'm sorry to contradict you, CP, I'm pretty sure that Sinbad wasn't a Bible character.

    Saddam Hussein

According to Al Hurra TV (and via BBC News 24), the deed's been done!

    Saddam Hussein

That is definitely bad news for deadpool enthusiasts. I've got Saddam in this years DDP, so hang away, Just leave his two chums until Jan 1st. It was all over the news today (well, Radio 1 news... or should I call that: "news") that thousands of people have rung up the Iraqi PM's office asking to be Mr Hussein's executioner. Looks as though TF has possibly gone to great lengths for a few measly points...

    Saddam Hussein

That is definitely bad news for deadpool enthusiasts. Not for those who gambled on him this year.

    James Brown

In honour of his demise, we listened to James Brown's Funky Christmas this evening, which is (quite shockingly) owned by my sister. Unfortunately, his death didn't change the fact that it is genuinely a rubbish Christmas album. However, tribute was payed nonetheless. RIP James

    2007 DL Nominations Please

May I please request that CLS retain a position on our humble list? It would be a sad, sad thing to see him gone from here. I maintain full and enduring faith that our beloved Admin/Mods/Decision-makers-extraordinaire will make the 2007 list a spectacular list indeed.

    Joseph Barbera

Although a bit late, I'm pleased to see Mr Barbera coming in at a cool No 12 this year. We've not done so badly after all! Of course, these last few deaths seem to have coincided with absence from the DL on my part: I am otherwhere for a while, and upon my return someone else has died. Coincidence? One wonders... Anyhoo, go us!

    General Pinochet

I heard about Mr Pinochet's demise whilst driving cross-country on Sunday, and although I knew he'd been hotly debated on the DL I couldn't remember if he was on this year's list or not. It was only yesterday that I was able to confirm that he, indeed, was, and was therefore able to properly celebrate our 11th graduate of the year! Once again... ROCK ON, TEAM DEATHLIST! Eleven hits this year is not too shab... not too shab at all...

    Claude Levi-Strauss

First of all, thank you very much, 'in eternum+', for your reply! I appreciate that a lot. Secondly, I would like to emphasize that the reason for me writing at this site derives exclusively from the affection I have for the writings of Lévi-Strauss. It can seem a little bizarre to encounter a place, where people are concerned with the potential death of that same man. That is, however, not to say that you should put this hobby or whatever one could call it away. Rather, I find it appropriate to share with you that I find it to be a great thing that Lévi-Strauss is still alive, so that he as a "thinker" can give his view on certain things happening in the world at the moment. After all, it doesn't seem to be the case that people think before they act in our present day world. As a matter of fact, certain people declare that "we are not thinkers - we are do'ers"... So, what I'm saying is that instead of being focused on the potential death of a man like Lévi-Strauss, we should instead be a little bit more concerned with what the man did and do for obtaining a better understanding of life in the pusuit of making it better to live. I'm glad to see that not everyone on this site "hopes" he will die soon, although it seems to be the case for some. Consider for instance the very first posting under Lévi-Strauss made by Grim Reaper hoping to get a french too... Is the life of others just a joke for some people at this site? This joking with life is what I would like to comment on, and so I did. And about the health of Lévi-Strauss - I was only underlining my occupation as a student of anthropology to show that I was not just another somebody saying something about Lévi-Strauss he or she had seen on some obscure french homepage. I have actually met people, who themselves have met Lévi-Strauss just recently, in 2004 and 2005! I wanted to prove the validity of my information on the health of Lévi-Strauss, not to braggle. So screw you, Godot! My pleasure, Christian. I remember you from last year and am pleased to see you still around, and still sharing the same enthusiasm for Prof LS. I acknowledge your points above about celebrating CLS's life's achievements etc. and certainly don't disagree. However, there are many places - both in and out of cyberspace - where that occurs (indeed, the fact that CLS has the honour of being on the DL circuitously does exactly that). However, our humble website elects to focus on individuals via the inevitability of their demise. To each their own, yes? You seem clever enough to realise that the members of this site don't see anyone else's life as "just a joke", and it's a shame you wrote that as I think it demeans you somewhat; it's such a weak and pedestrian remark. I hope you don't let Godot put you off. Again, I personally appreciate your CLSian contributions as there seems to be precious little information about him. If you hear anything further about his state of health etc., please do feel free to let us know!

    Claude Levi-Strauss

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY PROF LEVI-STRAUSS! Absolutely gutted I missed The Big Day. This working-for-a-living malarky really is a bit much... Nice to see you again, Christian; hope you're keeping well. Thanks for the reminder and update. Please do keep us abreast if and when you have any new news of our mutual friend. I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

    Most Obsessive Deathlisters

How extremely odd. I have not had access to our little forum of fun and happiness for the past while for a variety of reasons... and upon my return I can't help but note that I seem to have less posts to my name than I did when I left. I'm sure I didn't dream the milestone - various congratulatory messages support my belief otherwise. I'm confused - if you don't post for a while, does your post-count start going backwards? Or have some of my posts been deleted? Or is this some sort of post-modern commentary on my comment above? All very curiouser and curiouser...

    Room 101

I like "DL Limbo". Limbo is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as: limbo (UNCERTAINTY) noun an uncertain situation that you cannot control and in which there is no advancement or improvement: (ex) Until one of the DL candidates dies we're in limbo. and therefore represents exactly what the new forum is. And besides, the term has been incorporated into mainstream vocabulary in such a way that it has lost it's religious overtones.

Whilst attempting to log into the DL, I mistyped the URL name and found this website, which is a portal to many other very interesting websites. A bit American, but mayhep useful nonetheless.

    Deathlist 2006-an All Boys Club?

Which was precisely my (and the panel's) point. If the DeathList operated purely on a 'everybody dies' premise, it wouldn't make for a particularly exciting competition, would it? [youthful idealistic mode]Shouldn't the decision about whom to vote for be based on who would best represent the people and/or who would best run the country, and not gender?[/youthful idealistic mode]

    Deathlist 2006-an All Boys Club?

Last month I went to a talk at the Cheltenham Literature Festival about obituary writing in The Times. The talk itself was, unfortunately, not particularly stimulating, but at the end someone in the audience asked the panel members why there are always so many more obituaries for men than for women. The answer provided was that the generation predminantly dying at the moment is one that, for the most part, did not really allow women into high positions of power: women weren't really involved in politics, the higher ranks of the military, etc. The only sphere in which women might have made a name for themselves was the arts: as musicians, actors, authors, and the like. Which is why there are so few female obits at the moment. Which makes sense. The general feeling of the panel was that more female obits will begin to appear as women become more prominent within the fields that are considered worthy of warranting obits by the major papers.
