[mode = nerd] From that website I glean that 45 people born in the 19th century are still with us. After all, those born in 1900 were also born in the 19th century, for the same reason that the 21st century began on 1 January 2001: there was no year 0. [/mode] regards, Hein We may as well name & shame them, for all the fruit pickers out there. In a jingoistic spirit, I'll have my fiver on Grace Jones to beat the Japs and the Yanks and take a surprise gold in 2017. All that nightclubbing will keep her fit and healthy. 1. Crashing Companies

It's free if you spend more than £20. There are many stores that don't even allow you to order online and have it delivered to a store, or you have to order it while you're in the store. I know it's free if you spend over £20. That isn't the point. The point is that their direct competitors (eg Superdrug) make no such charge at all, so it's not a very good business move to introduce charges IMO. I would say that ordering online and collecting in store is becoming an increasingly common system. I don't know of any other retailer that charges its customers extra for this. It doesn't cost them anything to implement it as the orders are simply added to the regular stock delivery. Hot Topic in the U.S. charge if you order online to have shipped to a store. The only way to avoid the charge is for one of the sales assistants to do that for you at the store itself. I think that customer chasing is now a thing of the past and now businesses are wanting quality not quantity. Those customers that cost them money (or don't make them very much) can go to their competitors and they will concentrate on the best customers. Customers may have to adjust their actions accordingly. I imagine free returns for online orders will not be around much longer.

Has now been found but in hospital after hunger strike. I have a feeling a few chancers may play her in their 2014 DDP teams.

Someone who is surprisingly not a DDP pick this year is Biddy Baxter (b.1933) who is about to receive and honorary BAFTA.

Whom Are You Tarring With The Epithet "twunt"?

If you really want the extremely nerdy answer to the question. I was on another site and wanted a name that reflected both my love of reading but also have a fantasy element to it. Intially I went for Bookwyrm but this had already been taken and rather than add just a prosaic number I thought more laterally and literally so Bookwyrm became Bibliogryphon. I liked it and decided to use it for this forum as well as I didn't stay very long on the other site and didn't want to waste the name.

    Discuss The 2013 Deathlist

Sods law that - I drafted an "as it stands" DDP list a month ago (giving it a bit more though, seeing how badly I did this year) - and a whole quarter of that bloody list has since popped their clogs. At least it shows you are thinking along the right lines. This is my 1000th post.

    Discuss The 2013 Deathlist

I am predicting that the next week or so may see a bit of excitement in the Deathlist circles maybe not one of the 50 (forty one) but some of those on the DDP lists and peoples planning for next year. There are two reasons for my prediction 1. I am going to China where I find it difficult to access the list and the two times I have been earlier this year brought the deaths of Henry Cecil and Ray Harryhausen. 2. Yesterday on the train I completed the first draft of my 2014 entry form for my works competition, now that I have got the line up of 400 they will start dying to make the list out of date. It will be worse after 02nd December when I circulate the list. Last year I lost six picks before the competition started. This does not constitute scientific evidence.

    Survivor

I would agree with you if this were 3-4 years ago. The Daily Mail online in the last 2 years or so has been trying to appeal to the Us market, specifically the types of people in the Us who read stuff like TMZ and or People magazine. If you combine that with the show Survivor itself reliant on stunt casting and constant returning players the last few years, has turned some contestants into quasi celebs. It certainly increases the pool of past contestants who could get UK Obits. Even BB an obscure 2nd boot who wasn't even on my list of people who would get a UK obit scrapped by with a Daily Mail obit last week. This show is a complete mystery to me, I have never seen it and only its discussion here has brought it to my attention. Is it even shown in the UK?

    PD James

I also think she is over optimistic about the integrity of her family and publisher. I suspect when she does die they would happily publish her shopping lists if they thought money could be made from them. (I know nothing of her specific family but other literary families do not give much hope)

Things To Do While Waiting For Death

Attend a fancy dress party and cause maximum offence To be honest I couldn't get hysterical and offended in the same way the papers did but there again I frequent this site. The young ladies in question probably did not expect to end up on the fronty page of national papers - shows a creative flair.

    Death Anniversary Thread

It is a pity he did not live longer because surely he would have been the first person to go to for the theme tune to the latest James Bond film. He could have formed a "Skyfall" band. Obviously an Adele fan - he even included her picture.

    Brinsworth House and Denville Hall

Daily Mirror article says Bruce is still visiting and caring for his first wife. Apparently, she was moved in five years ago, after it became impossible to care for her at home. Also, mentions she had a stroke. That article includes the line: "His infectious smile and bubbly character brighten up living rooms across the country every weekend." So, it's my problem if I think him a twat and leave the room when Mrs MPFC starts indulging her Strictly passion, then? You will be able to watch next week as Bruce gets the week off.

    Kate And Gerry

I for one would buy this book. Mostly for Mrs Bibliogryphon to read as this is her pet subject. I would approach it as another view on the facts from someone who was close enough to be knowledgeable but it would be read in context and after reading this i might pick up the Kate & Gerry propeganda to compare it to. However, it is possible that this could be an attempt to cover up any mistakes the Portugese police might have made during the investigation but I expect it would be less partial than Kate & Gerry's book. It is hypocrisy in preventing publication of this book whilst flogging thier own.

    5. Pope Francis

In keeping with his drive to better serve the poor Pope Francis has abandoned his traditional gold cross in favour of an iron one. Which is fine as a symbol of austerity but if Pope Benedict has awarded himself an iron cross there would have been hell to pay.

    Jimmy Savile

I don't think this guy was Savile's driver, this is somebody else. It says in the report that this case was unconnected to Savile. This guy was a BBC staff driver (I think).
