Who Should Be On The Deathlist 2014
Bibliogryphon replied to Spade_Cooley's topic in DeathList Forum
I am going to suggest Rodney Bewes and I also think Eddie Large might be an outside shot. On the widow front what about Dolores Hope and Barbara Marx? -
Just like Nelson Mandela. many people subscribe to the view, and increasingly I am one of them, that Nelson Mandela may allready be dead, and his death is being covered up till after the South African elections, so Zumas chances won't be damaged. Jaruzelski on the other hand is of no importance to anyone so when he dies we will be told of it I'm sure. That could come any day now. watch this space... Fortunately I've been out of circulation since this message was posted so have not wasted eight days watching this space.

Assuming life spans stay as they are (a dodgy assumption, I know) we may expect the last person from the 20th century to die around 2115. It doesn't take "at least two generations", but rather more exactly a century from now, or slightly more than three generations. regards, Hein Talking about life spans I remember my biology teacher saying the human body could probably live for maximum 150 years with some medical help (operations, medcine etc) and living a healthy life with the luck of good genes,I'm guessing were approaching that slowly and i think you will see a big jump in the longer we live with the decline of smoking . Humans could potentially live forever by stopping the cells aging or reversing them ,however wouldn't cells begin to break down after so many reversals kind of like photocopying a photocopy ? I am currently at a conference in China and somebody put a slide on the screen yesterday of charting the worlds population over the last two hundred years there was a sharp up turn in the 1950s which the speaker attributed to the introduction of the polio vaccine. The question is what will be the limiting factor for the ageing of the general populace and are the Japanese and certain sectors of the rest of the world genetically disposed to longer life.

OK I have some time on my hands so here is the current top 10. All women, the oldest bloke is Arturo Licate from Italy who wasn't born until 1902. 1. Misao Okawa 1898 Japan 2. Jeralean Talley 1899 US 3. Susannah Mushatt-Jones 1899 US 4. Bernice Madigan 1899 US 5. Emma Morano-Martinuzzi 1899 Italy (Oldest European) 6. Anna Henderson 1900 US 7. Antona Rivera 1900 US 8. Ethel Lang 1900 UK (Oldest Britain) 9. Nabi Tajima 1900 Japan 10. Blanche Cobb 1900 US So Ethel is starting much higher than Grace Jones did.

Ideas And Possibilities For 2014
Bibliogryphon replied to The Unknown Man's topic in DeathList Forum
A definite possibility - nothing like keeping your options open -
[mode = nerd] From that website I glean that 45 people born in the 19th century are still with us. After all, those born in 1900 were also born in the 19th century, for the same reason that the 21st century began on 1 January 2001: there was no year 0. [/mode] regards, Hein We may as well name & shame them, for all the fruit pickers out there. In a jingoistic spirit, I'll have my fiver on Grace Jones to beat the Japs and the Yanks and take a surprise gold in 2017. All that nightclubbing will keep her fit and healthy. 1. Besse Cooper USA 115 (World and Olympic champion) 2. Dina Manfredini Ita 115 (European champion) 3. Jiroemon Kimura Jap 115 4. Misawo Okawa Jap 114 5. Kame Nakamura Jap 114 6. Merle Barwis USA/Can 111 Oh Grace, you've let yourself down, you've let Britain down, but more importantly, you've let me and my fiver down. Well considering that list must be 12 months old she did well to climb from 26th to 6th Where is Ethel on the world ranking now?

I hope it wasn't severe stomach cramp. -
Just like Nelson Mandela.

It's free if you spend more than £20. There are many stores that don't even allow you to order online and have it delivered to a store, or you have to order it while you're in the store. I know it's free if you spend over £20. That isn't the point. The point is that their direct competitors (eg Superdrug) make no such charge at all, so it's not a very good business move to introduce charges IMO. I would say that ordering online and collecting in store is becoming an increasingly common system. I don't know of any other retailer that charges its customers extra for this. It doesn't cost them anything to implement it as the orders are simply added to the regular stock delivery. Hot Topic in the U.S. charge if you order online to have shipped to a store. The only way to avoid the charge is for one of the sales assistants to do that for you at the store itself. I think that customer chasing is now a thing of the past and now businesses are wanting quality not quantity. Those customers that cost them money (or don't make them very much) can go to their competitors and they will concentrate on the best customers. Customers may have to adjust their actions accordingly. I imagine free returns for online orders will not be around much longer.

Ethel Lang from Barnsley come on down!!
-
Has now been found but in hospital after hunger strike. I have a feeling a few chancers may play her in their 2014 DDP teams.
-
Even more scary he is targeted by Sarah Palin
-
Someone who is surprisingly not a DDP pick this year is Biddy Baxter (b.1933) who is about to receive and honorary BAFTA.

Whom Are You Tarring With The Epithet "twunt"?
Bibliogryphon replied to maryportfuncity's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
If you really want the extremely nerdy answer to the question. I was on another site and wanted a name that reflected both my love of reading but also have a fantasy element to it. Intially I went for Bookwyrm but this had already been taken and rather than add just a prosaic number I thought more laterally and literally so Bookwyrm became Bibliogryphon. I liked it and decided to use it for this forum as well as I didn't stay very long on the other site and didn't want to waste the name. -

Am I now gifted with any supernatural powers? ...... Thought not. -
Sods law that - I drafted an "as it stands" DDP list a month ago (giving it a bit more though, seeing how badly I did this year) - and a whole quarter of that bloody list has since popped their clogs. At least it shows you are thinking along the right lines. This is my 1000th post.

I am predicting that the next week or so may see a bit of excitement in the Deathlist circles maybe not one of the 50 (forty one) but some of those on the DDP lists and peoples planning for next year. There are two reasons for my prediction 1. I am going to China where I find it difficult to access the list and the two times I have been earlier this year brought the deaths of Henry Cecil and Ray Harryhausen. 2. Yesterday on the train I completed the first draft of my 2014 entry form for my works competition, now that I have got the line up of 400 they will start dying to make the list out of date. It will be worse after 02nd December when I circulate the list. Last year I lost six picks before the competition started. This does not constitute scientific evidence.

Just been reading another thread - silly hat, silly beard therefore was Bob the leader of the Stewart Taliban? -
I would agree with you if this were 3-4 years ago. The Daily Mail online in the last 2 years or so has been trying to appeal to the Us market, specifically the types of people in the Us who read stuff like TMZ and or People magazine. If you combine that with the show Survivor itself reliant on stunt casting and constant returning players the last few years, has turned some contestants into quasi celebs. It certainly increases the pool of past contestants who could get UK Obits. Even BB an obscure 2nd boot who wasn't even on my list of people who would get a UK obit scrapped by with a Daily Mail obit last week. This show is a complete mystery to me, I have never seen it and only its discussion here has brought it to my attention. Is it even shown in the UK?

I also think she is over optimistic about the integrity of her family and publisher. I suspect when she does die they would happily publish her shopping lists if they thought money could be made from them. (I know nothing of her specific family but other literary families do not give much hope)

Things To Do While Waiting For Death

Attend a fancy dress party and cause maximum offence To be honest I couldn't get hysterical and offended in the same way the papers did but there again I frequent this site. The young ladies in question probably did not expect to end up on the fronty page of national papers - shows a creative flair. -
Apparenlty she wants to appear on Who do you think you are? before she dies. This is from a couple of weeks ago

It is a pity he did not live longer because surely he would have been the first person to go to for the theme tune to the latest James Bond film. He could have formed a "Skyfall" band. Obviously an Adele fan - he even included her picture.
