    Donald J Trump

I said here before that I would never comment on the Israel/Palestine struggle because it's pointless and divisive. Now here's another example. If you're pro-Israel, you're anti-Iran, and consequently, anti-Russian. Can Trump be both pro- and anti-Russian? Guess we'll see.

    Shannen Doherty

Shannen Doherty, known globally for Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed has breast cancer: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3203822/Yes-cancer-Shannen-Doherty-44-confirms-breast-cancer-filing-lawsuit-against-business-manager-letting-health-insurance-lapse.html Very interesting case, she sues her former company for lapsed health insurance, so she couldn't visit a doctor for over a year. So it's possible the cancer is already at an advanced stage.

I guess the Kennedies had a similar trajectory - would have worked twice or three times, with Bobby and, to a lesser degree, Ted.

If there is one thing Trump knows, it's how to put completely loyal people into key positions. That's what he's been doing for decades, it's how he evaded the law time and time again. He has the mob mentality in him, and he elevated the "quid pro quo" kind of mafia dealings up to the presidency. Luckily for him, the GOP after Obama was exactly in the kind of weakened, dependent state to be ripe for a takeover.

    Football

No doubt the best team of the tournament won. I am still thinking that the best two teams played against each other in the quarter-finals. England was not that far behind though. They played very "Germany in the 80s", i.e. they win the games but nobody really knows why.

Yesterday, somebody pointed out that everything with Trump is drama and chaos. I do think that THIS is the single-person thread that will get up to 200 pages, so more than QE II, more than Margaret Thatcher. This man is just one perpetual drama machine.

    Death By Numbers 2024

Okay.... well I hope I got it right with all the replacements, all the Sven-Göran Erikssons and Johnnie Walkers and Jane McAleveys. Speaking of which.... McAlevey is dead and gets a rare Morningstar Online obit, we love to see them. The American labour activist hung on just long enough to be a popular replacement pick, thus keeping me from getting a nice differential hit. An interesting effect this year that I don't lose that much terrain with the replacement picks because I had some of the names before. Other names for this update are quite the heavy hitters. First of all, Shannen Doherty. She seemed the most notable face of the Beverly Hills 90210 crew to me. But I never watched the show and have to rely on the memories of my sister's youth magazines there. Later, she got another hit role in "Charmed" which wasn't quite the same phenomenon but still quite popular. Afterwards, her career stalled, as she suffered a severe case of "aging in Hollywood". In the final years, the cancer of course didn't help, but she seemed to be doing alright, and didn't have that long final painful period that other long-time breast cancer sufferers have - at least she didn't show it! Here's another breast cancer case where the ominous spreading to the bones announced the final year. Let's move on to Ruth Westheimer. The trained sniper was catapulted into world-wide fame in the early 80s when she first got the chance to have her own radio show, and then even a TV show in which she gave relationship advice as she had previously done for decades in her own sex therapy practice. It was still a time when people were afraid to ask, and when there wasn't more info than you could possibly want on the internet. TorvaMessor receives a unique hit, well done! Vic Seixas is a unique hit for Lady Fiona, also congratulations there! He was a winner of two grand slam titles and the no. 1 US player for quite some time. He was one of VERY few top sportspeople to make the full century. Joe Engle is a hit for tracy and the Immortal. He was a trained pilot and astronaut, first flying experimental airplanes to altitudes that count as "space", and then as part of the first Space Shuttle flights. Then Shelley Duvall, a hit for a couple of teams. Somewhat unfairly, she'll be remembered mostly for being the wife of a bonkers Jack Nicholson in Kubrick's Shining. The same year she starred in the Popeye movie, and then a few months later in Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits. Afterwards, the big movie roles somewhat dried up. And there were always rumours of some mental instability - sort of a presumed Kubrick effect, who wanted her to be actually scared instead of just acting that way. Somehow one knew that she wouldn't quite make average life expectancy, and it was diabetes that killed her. Now, Jim Inhofe. The Senator from Oklahoma is a unique hit for tracy. He had been retired for two years, but probably could have had the seat until he died, because it was a very safe republican seat in Oklahoma. He was one of the cases where you wondered whether he's dumbing it down for his audience, or whether he is actually a little simple. I assume it's the former, but you can't quite tell. He once brought a snowball into the Senate and thus demonstrated the difference between weather and climate. Apparently, certain jobs require a bit of grandstanding and acting for the base. And also, there was one hit I saw that I had previously forgotten, Queens Park Rangers legend Stan Bowles. The indisputable star of his team had suffered from Alzheimer's for many years and already died back in February. Maybe I mentioned him but forgot to allocate the points? Toast, Book and Sean get some late points. Predictably, I lose the lead after the substitutions, and it's Cpt. Chorizo and his always well-balanced selection of advanced cancer sufferers who takes the lead with the death of Shannen Doherty: Rank Team Score 1 Cpt. Donald J Trump

Seems like to shooter was a republican, but of the gun nut/libertarian brand. That might be an unlikely blessing in that it's harder now to further rile the partisans up. If it had been a black or outspoken LGBT person...

Yeah, I don't know how this affects the "horserace" of the election, I just know that it's going to get nasty. But to be honest, we all knew this election was going to be nasty, and assasination attempts were kind of expected. They usually don't get that close to succeeding though.

    Israeli Targets

I'm not quite letting this one go. This thread has literally never worked. For the first 13 years, nothing noteworthy happened. Then a few mentions of Netanyahu, who now has his own thread, and is still alive!, and then the majority of mentioned people are palestinians. I do think a real middle east conflict thread might be more useful.

Oh well, I quoted a post in this thread and it has kind of morphed, see arghton above me. Let's rename it to "Israeli/Palestine clusterfuck" or something.

Yeah, Biden cant win. His appearances after the debate were better, yesterday's appearances were even good - except for those two slips of the tongue, or mind. Those get the headlines.

I'll be singing Chappell Roan at karaoke tomorrow, so if I don't post again... Since she died of diabetes, maybe the music was too saccharine for her.

Emergency surgery for Josh Homme, European leg of the tour cancelled. Curious. https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/musik/queens-of-the-stone-age-sagen-konzerte-in-europa-ab-josh-homme-muss-operiert-werden-a-d4c27874-e816-4f3f-a0a7-c607da4dc7ca English source: https://pitchfork.com/news/queens-of-the-stone-ages-josh-homme-to-undergo-emergency-surgery-band-cancels-european-tour/ Edit: The Internet suggests that it's a hernia that Homme tried to "play out". Looking even deeper, the touring schedule is killing him. He had lost weight after cancer and seemed healthy in 2023. But he's drinking like crazy and seems to have been in ill health for a couple of months now.

    Deathlist Cup 2024

It's quite unbelievable, but yes, a person in hospice care has died, and they were picked in this round! Jane McAlevey was part activist, part academic - a frequent combination in leftist circles! She was an internationally renowned name for her research on labour rights and her hands-on activism. In fact, the second obit I found of her today was from the german Rosa Luxemburg-Stiftung. She wrote a couple books on organizing labor into a political force and was in the midst of labour battles right until the end, when the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee got forced into accepting unionization. McAlevey was diagnosed with ovarian cancer already back in 2009 actually, beat it, but then got ill with multiple myeloma in 2021 and lasted for three more years. Unfortunately, wannamaker ran out of patience and switched out a few of the hospice names, whereas max_bossetti kept the faith and is rewarded: wannamaker 0-4 max_bossetti

    Deathless Days

Every day, I check Wikipedia's list of daily deaths: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2015 I used to think that there is never any day with less than 7 deaths per day*. But that belief was refuted when the 6th of November only had 6 deaths (there's almost no chance left another death appears). Sometimes it takes a while for a death to be known and to be noted, but so far, the 20th of December only had one death. Could this be the least deadly day ever? *=That rule is not true for years prior to 2010, because Wikipedia wasn't yet as careful and thorough with their death notifications.

    General Election 2024?

Looks like France is also heading for such a LAB-LIB government. Accidental win for the centre-left.
