Foreign Personalities, From Stage, Screen, Politics And Life

Holocaust survivor and "birthgiver" (incarnait?) of La RĂ©sistance during World War II, Yvette Farnoux, has died at 96: http://www.lemonde.fr/disparitions/article/2015/11/09/yvette-farnoux-survivante-d-auschwitz-est-morte_4806130_3382.html(link in French)

    Helmut Schmidt

That raises a couple of questions though. Did anyone permit his personal physician to publicly speculate when he'd die? Isn't there any legislation in Germany preventing doctors from... divulging medical secrets? Or at least the Hippocratic Oath? Now I have an answer to that, because yes, doctors are meant to keep the secrets of their patients, but according to this article: https://de.nachrichten.yahoo.com/helmut-schmidt-nur-sehr-selten-060948711.html(german link) Schmidt's daughter has given his personal doctor the permission to talk. He says that in the past two days, Schmidt has only rarely been conscious. Schmidt "should be moved to a hospital" but it was his wish to stay at home. Also, asked whether Schmidt would ever recover again, he says "No, sadly I don't believe that."

French philosopher André Glucksmann, commonly counted among the "nouveaux" philosophers along with Sartre or Foucault, has died at 78: http://www.lemonde.fr/disparitions/article/2015/11/10/mort-d-andre-glucksmann-le-philosophe-en-colere_4806244_3382.html(french link)

Who Should Be On The 2016 Deathlist?

If the Death List wants to replace Helmut Schmidt with a similar character (if he dies...) they could go for other "forefathers of the Euro". I'm thinking of Valerie Giscard D'Estaing or Jacques Delors. In the latter case, it's also completely obvious that the Death List headline would be some kind of "Up Yours, Delors" joke. And they would both cover the "token french" slot, which was unoccupied this year. Both of them still seem semi-active though, but that was true for Helmut Schmidt as well.

    Deathrace 2016

I will handicap myself again and not choose the same person for two deadpools (excepting the Rotten Dead Pool). Let's see how it goes... I feel there is an unusual eagerness on this forum this year to get the next year going.

    Helmut Schmidt

I wonder if Schmidt is still aware of the idea that dying today would be of historic importance, since November 9th, is Germany's "fateful date": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_9_in_German_history Also, the president of the german football association resigned today because of the possible bribery scandal regarding the award of the 2006 World Cup.

    Helmut Schmidt

Not responsive anymore: http://www.bild.de/politik/inland/helmut-schmidt/wie-schlecht-geht-es-dem-altkanzler-43328282.bild.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter(link in german) This, however, is one of Germany's less reliable papers. The biggest tabloid. Edit: His personal doctor apparently said that Schmidt has high fever (39* Celsius) because of an "unclear infection" and his body has "hardly any resistance" left. Ahem, and there are also a couple of "onlookers and reporters" around the house.

    Helmut Schmidt

His general condition has declined "dramatically": http://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/altkanzler-helmut-schmidt-soll-es-sehr-schlecht-gehen-1.2728355(german link) His daughter has traveled to Hamburg (from Great Britain) and friends "fear for the worst". This newspaper is one of Germany's best. So it looks like it's going to be the end, fairly soon.

    Sepp Blatter

They're surviving without him, mind. A cynical prediction: he'll conveniently hover in the medical twilight zone where his fitness to appear in court is always under threat whilst his hold on life stays up there with the likes of Ernest Saunders. Probably. Though I wonder how strongly the arm of American justice lingers in the background here. There something similar going on here in Germany regarding the decision to award the WC 2006 to us. The responsible people are tearing each other apart in the press at the moment. They're selling out each other in the hope of escaping justice.
