But he had an air of "elder statesman" around him and became the "conscience of the nation" in his last decade of life. He was a contrast to the more pedestrian, power-conscious, ruthless Kohl.

I can't read the interview in the Hamburger Abendblatt, but in the assumption that de.nachrichten.yahoo.com didn't make it all up, this sounds very much like Schmidt's Schluss.
