    Stranger Than Death

Three elderly japanese people fell to their death from the same nursing home veranda in the past two months: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/09/07/national/three-seniors-fell-from-nursing-homes-verandas-late-last-year-no-suicide-notes-found/#.Ve1QX_ntlBc No suicide notes were found, but it could be that they were pushed to their death by a worker who has quit the job by now. The more interesting possibility is that these were simply curious accidents which is what the nursing home says.

Ben Kuroki, only Japanese-American to fly above Japan (during WW II I should add) for the American side, has died at 98: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/09/07/national/history/ben-kuroki-japanese-american-wwii-bomber-crew-hero-dead-98/#.Ve1QUPntlBc He enlisted after Pearl Harbor and overcame U.S. discrimination policies.

    Syria

I wish other arabic countries would at least help a little (excepting Lebanon, which probably has more refugees than indigenous people). Germany can well shelter several tens of thousands. But they are projecting numbers of more than half a million this year alone. Though I can understand the desire to escape from ISIS. I'd do the same, probably, before they kick me off a roof.

    Derby Dead Pool 2015

I wonder if this year someone is going to break 100 pts. The winner usually did. All the easy ways to do that lead through Martin Crowe's death. And with him, TJS is still a likely winner, mostly because I think that Christy Dignam is safe for 2015 (but not beyond), so that other teams need multiple hits to surpass him. Yes, there are cases like Leo Scullion or Ed Drummond, but then TJS still has Harry Beitzel. So in terms of probability, it's a wash. Golden Slumbers still has a chance, with Monty Brinson and Goran Hadzic (plus Martin Crowe). DQSP, Star Dust and Going Underground (and everyone else) are out, in my very personal opinion.

    Helmut Schmidt

That list of smokers is very interesting, from a statistical perspective. Helmut Schmidt's smoking habit has two special factors though: He likes to smoke menthol cigarettes, and his favorite (only?) brand is Roth-Händle, an ancient german product only being smoked by old people. I suspect, that this brand is so old, it might not contain all these carcinogenic additives that are meant to improve the taste. But the latter is just my theory...

    Rotten Dead Pool

Statistically, it's a probability of around 40%, according to U.S. social security statistics. Hmm, could be the closest one ever got, except for that team that missed Norman Wisdom's death by a year - oh, and the one banking on Ariel Sharon, that must have been a frustrating wait. Edit: Hmm, I had forgotten I had picked Oliver Sacks here. Made my decision not to choose him for Shaun's deadpool even sillier.

  23. I'm not sure if immortality is a blessing or a curse. However, both immortality and death are pretty intimidating because they both last forever. Maybe the best solution is to be aware that your soul will survive but your identity will be wiped out, so you have a fresh life and an empty mind again. I do think that there might be astonishing medical successes this century, like extending the human life span by a century or so, until the next biological problem appears. The current generation of billionaires, the Google brothers or Peter Thiel are investing billions in fighting death. I could imagine something happening by 2060-70 and I wonder if I would like to stay in the shape of an 80-year old for decades.
