So, How's Your 2017 Shortlist Looking?
Predictor replied to msc's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
I have submitted my main team earlier today. Half of them are ill, but won't get an obit. The other half would get an obit, but aren't ill... Ok, a bit of an exaggeration maybe, but there is some truth to it. Only 8 of my entries have ever been selected for the DDP. Out of the remaining 12, only 6 of them have ever been mentioned on this forum (for health/age-related reasons, at least). 5 of those never mentioned actually have any known illnesses. Between 1-4 of them could be obitable in DDP-terms, although it's hard to say for sure. Oh, and I can only realistically expect to get a Drop 40 bonus from a single "mainstream" entry. -
Oooh, I have a great idea. How about we keep count of those who have been mentioned so far? And perhaps extend to those who died in previous years? We can even have a target like, say, one million folks!!!!!!

It is. He has several teams... Both teams have 30-something points atm, so at least he is consistent in his deathpool mediocrity. Sent from glass house. Ah, I understand you taking this very seriously. One's first time is very special and you want it to be as memorable as possible. But in reality, it ends up in complete disaster... Same here. At least, I haven't found any online obituaries for MH (not that he is a celeb but still), so I'm hoping for the best. -

What's Zorders score, because you might get a fourth hit with Reynolds. His team name is Dead and Deader 3: Lie Back and Think of Lynndie England. It currently has 3 hits and 32 points. Even with Debbie Reynolds' death, my team is still 7 points behind despite having one more hit. I guess making Rob Ford the joker was a winning strategy (by "winning", I mean our internal competition). But, the year isn't over yet and I still have time to catch up. Have you sent in your main team yet, Joey? -
"Goodbye Charlie". Btw, I hate it when I'm ONE team away from having a unique pick. Happened three times this year: Conrad Phillips was chosen by myself and "Last Gasp Saloon". Bobby Vee was chosen by myself and a lousy theme team called "Shake, Rattle, Roll Over And Play Dead". Debbie Reynolds was chosen by myself and yet another lousy theme team called "Antique Femme Fatales".

Hey! I saw the new "Drop 40 pick" bonus while reading the DDP rules. To be honest, I'm not sure I understand why it was introduced. Basically, the Drop 40 consists of the celebrities that have been included in the most amount of teams. Almost by default, the most popular selections are those whose fame levels are high, whose ages are advanced, and/or those whose illnesses have been publicized substantially in mainstream media. In other words, the research effort that goes into finding these people is negligable. So why are we rewarding deathpoolers with bonuses for going with people like Kirk Douglas and Vera Lynn? It's like the exact opposite of the "unique pick" bonus, ain't it? Also, it becomes a self-fullfilling prophecy when a large amount of entrants choose celebrity x because they believe that others will choose him/her, which results in x being chosen. While without the bonus, teams would have opted not to pick x because (s)he is just really old and takes up space for better picks.[/rant]

Mamie Van Doren posted the following picture two hours ago on her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mamie.vandoren If that's not a clear message to death poolers worldwide as we approach the starting line(s), then I don't know what is. What's awesome about Mamie, besides having Swedish ancestry on her father's side, is that she could easily pass for someone in her 50s. On her website, she posted a nude picture of herself from a little over a year ago (November 2015). Won't post the actual picture here, but here is the link to her site: http://www.mamievandoren.com/ Her second husband, bandleader Ray Anthony, is also unusually active (for his age) on social media. https://www.facebook.com/rayanthonyband These two FB-pages could come in handy in the near/far future should they ever reveal any health issues.

The obit is indeed written in Swedish, but YLE is actually a Finnish media company.

Sorry misread that clearly. That's what happens when people don't use the comma sign to distinguish one noun from another in a sentence, Shaun.

Working on it at the moment. Although I seem to get worse for every year that I participate...One thing I hope is that Dead and Deader 4 will enter the 2017 DDP. Zorders and I used to have a "friendly little rivalry" and compare our results. It turns out we both always end up with either the same amount of hits or the same score. Trivia that probably only he and I care about: Anyway, back to the 'getting worse for every year' part...My points for the four DDP seasons I've participated in goes as follows: 43-33-25-19. A downward spiral if there ever was one. My very modest hope is to get at least a better result next year than this one. At least in previous years, I've been able to whine about Bess Myerson & Magnus Härenstam not getting proper obits and use that as scapegoats. But in 2016, I just simply made some bad selections (although I do feel somewhat proud that I opted for Bobby Vee and not Bobby Rydell instead). -

He was one of the 11 names in the first online prediction I ever made on New Year's Eve in 2011. May he rest in peace. -
It sort of amazes me that the chat room always is completely packed around midnight on New Year's Eve. Luckily for me, Britain is an hour behind so I usually have a whole hour for fireworx/celebrations before the new list is released. I'm in Chicago, where the new list comes out at 6:00PM. Plenty of time to chat, complain, compliment, etc. before the celebrations begin. Hmm. I thought you moved from United States to Poland recently. It's hard to keep up.

I'm a huge fan of your signature, Lewd. It's a modern classic.

Mine is 49.2%. Took me over 6 months to get my first like. Like buttons in general can be a bit impersonal though; I'd much rather have 1 person paying a compliment with actual words to a post I've made than 10 "likes". -
So, when's part 2 coming?

It's only fitting that my 450th post comes exactly 3 years after my 1st post. That makes an even average number of 150/year. It's only fitting that my 600th post comes exactly 4 years after my 1st post. That makes an even average number of 150/year. -
Same day as Ronnie Biggs. Coincidence?

Have you tried knocking on the door yelling WIIILMAAA?

I think it's just misplaced; it would perhaps suit better in extra-curricular since this section is for death pools that members of this site play on these boards?

Brilliantly put Bibliogryphon.I was thinking a similar thing. If say Gudrun Ure Geoffrey from rainbow or Matthew Corbett or Richard Caddell was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer no one would say they arent famous enough for the Deathlist.Stefan Karl Stefannson is clearly an equivalent of those names so to me the argument for including him is really obvious. The DL criteria stipulates someone has to be famous in their own right prior to illness and also likely enough to get uk obits when they die.Stefan fits both boxes without a doubt.I mean the DL committee needs to be more innovative.Their current policy of picking nonogenarians is looking increasly narrow focused as their hit scores indicate.I am not saying alter the rules but at least use them to your advantage.I suspect the committee will ignore StefanKarl Stefannson as well as Leah Bracknell Errol Christie Scott Putesky Helen Fawkes Fernando Rickson Piers Sellers Colin Meads Ian Martin John Wetton Steve Hewlett Lynne Stewart Peter Sarstedt and King Michael of Romania despite them all being within their criteria and unlikely to make 2018. I think this is one of those cases where the character is more famous than the person who portrays him. In other words, people may know about Robbie Rutten but give a blank questioning stare when the name Stefan Karl Stefansson comes up...I am of the generation that watched LazyTown occasionally when I was a kid, and I had never heard of this guy until a few weeks ago. Granted, there were other children's shows that I prioritized, like the one about a cow and a badger cohabiting. WOW. I think that could explain so many things. It reminds me of the head trip that was Polka Dot Shorts which my daughter unfathomably enjoyed. All children seem to love the type of shows that make adults go "wtf am I watching, am I high on acid right now??" I guess that's one of the reasons why our childhood heroes generally shouldn't be seriously considered, lest we end up with a Teletubbie on the DL...
