I have to admit as a child I liked the zoo. As an adult I agree with the premise that animals belong where their habitat is, not in a zoo (nor an aquarium/seaworld) with one possible exception - those that are close to extinction because of something we did in the first place. I appreciate this would mean kids of future generations might not be able to see these animals up close (at least not that easily), but that to me is the lesser of two evils. Just my 2p worth.

Not really. Long ago there was YTS and YOP which were the subject of quite a few jokes back in the day. These were later replaced by simply YT, which is also gone. They all failed in one way or another, arguably because all that happened was those nasty capitalist companies just used government funding (i.e. other peoples taxes) to pay most of the wages of young people they then just used for cheap labour citing it as on the job training. To be fair any discussion about that will have advocates on both sides because some companies were much better than this very low bar and did include proper training and day release for college courses and so on. Regardless of the reasoning, the schemes themselves are long gone. The latest I'm aware of was called kickstart and that was ended in January last year. TL:DR - Not that I'm aware of, but it's a damn long time since I was of an age where it was pertinent so younger posters hereabouts may be more up to date .
