Right, this is the first of a two part post - one focusing on this lot, the other a round-up of footballing possibilites, because there seem to be so many. Firstly, CP, I must mention something from the above. The 5 I mentioned are/were players who actually played in the tournament. Most of those above were just squad members - that's not to say they're not worthy, but records of them are even less kept than the players & it is unlikely in the extreme that any of them will get obits. Anyway... Boucek d. 10 Oct 1987 Diepenbeek d. 8 Aug 1981 Sole & Patzel... all sources seem to agree that they are dead, but they just don't know when precisely. Snitt would be around 104-105 now if he is still alive, which I doubt. Streb appears to be alive, but didn't play & that German side was pretty poor, so there won't be an obit. As for Kalocsai, he only recently passed away - the link is in Hungarian, but he appears to have died on 29 July 2007. Wow, how thorough. Thanks OoO!

Had Gabriel París Gordillo lived another month and a half, it would have been him. The oldest living former head of state is now Johan Ferrier of Suriname, with Mamadou Dia of Senegal not far behind. These lists may be of some interest to you.

I made brief mention of Foote's health here, and I've seen no signs that he's slowed down since.

Birthdays, Births, Anniversaries ,etc ...for 2008

Happy Birthday HJT! Here's a classy chick for a classy guy: -
You've gotten me into it too. I went through Wikipedia and composed a quick list of players who neither listed as deceased, nor could I find any evidence that they were deceased (eg. I found a source saying that the entire U.S. team is dead, so even though there's no DOD on a lot of their pages, they're all history). Since this discussion is surprisingly on the topic of the thread, I thought I'd share. I suspect even an obscure footy player would get attention if he were the last one from a World Cup Final, though Varallo is an inaccurate measure, since he's well-known outside of being the last from 1930. Also, as a caveat, being that I could only browse the names that people had bothered to add to Wikipedia, it's not a comprehensive list - in fact, of OoO's final five, only Llense had a Wikipedia page before yesterday (I gave Jaccard one last night). So aside from the four mentioned by OoO and Cisar, we have: Jaroslav Bouček Franz Dienert Jan van Diepenbeek Géza Kalocsay Ehrenfried Patzel Einar Snitt Pedro Solé Josef Streb I'm sure OoO could trim the list if he gets the time, but I don't have resources (ie. the Player History site) that he does. If all were alive (unlikely) that would bring the total to 13 survivors.

That Wiki entry on Alcazar is shamefully wrong. Alcazar died, first of all, April 4, 1979. But where on earth the Oran, Algeria came from, I do not know. He was known as Joseph "Pepito" Alcazar & part of the reason for this was because he was born in Spain - La Union, nr. Cartagena, to be precise. As for Cisar, all I have on him is the following "dead, death date unconfirmed". I suppose in the issues of fairness, you could leave that one open, but I have no knowledge that he is still alive. Doubt Cisar would get a proper obit even if he were alive anyhow. In defense of Wikipedia, all three sources claim that he was born in Oran, although I can't speak to how professional those sources are. Do you have a whole list of all the '34 players with their living status? Not that I want to steal it, just that you seem to be well organized on the topic.
-
Voted Betty Ford to give Levi Stubbs a break. I can certainly see it being Pollack or Sharon though.
-
Well done Deathlist! Just throwing in my congratulatory hat amongst the obits.
-
Do you know anything about French player Joseph Alcazar or Franz Cisar from that final? I came across them by accident and couldn't find anything about their deaths.
-
Before I cleaned up his Wikipedia page a while back, you would have thought this man was next prophet. Apparently he's quite well known, which should translate into an obit.... I would point out, however, that the faith itself is somewhat obscure... so don't count on the fact that he's a religious leader alone for this one.

Sent to you via Facebook Handy. 10 WDPers + 10 Gap Fillers. Let me know if there's anything that I need to correct.

Ideas And Possibilities For 2009

New CNN commentator Tony Snow was reportedly taken to the hospital this morning. In Washington state, the DC-based Snow canceled a series of speeches at Eastern Washington University because of illness. He was treated for exhaustion at the hospital, says a source. There is no word yet on his health status - he's been battling colon cancer - or whether he will appear on the air tonight with CNN, during its coverage of the Pennsylvania presidential primary..... He was on my Weatherman90 team for this year before it was aborted. I may have to find a home for him when my RDP switches over in May (if he lasts that long). CP: How many pools are you in? RDP? RDP = Rotten Dead Pool it has the advantages of being able to start whenever, a Hall of Fame that starts at 7 hits and, since you have to choose from a predetermined list of a couple thousand names, there's no worrying about whether or not you'll get an obit or that you'll be competing against a team of Edna Parkers or Josie Groves. The downsides are that even among the thousands of choices, it tends to be fairly Americentric - and even still, they don't have Phil Hill and only just added Jack Ramsay, so you have to be prepared for the fact that you won't be able to pick a lot of your bankers. Also, since every hit is worth one point, there's no incentive to pick interesting picks - if Britney Spears dies, that's as many points as Billy Graham. I was in 5 - DDP, WDP, CPDP, HDP and RDP. Out of those, however, I don't tend to take my own too seriously, since I don't really want to win my own pool, so I tend to try and pick more interesting (or at least less standard) teams for S&Gs. Also, NAP's HDP is reserved strictly for my "Dream Team," in which I only pick people who I have seen die in dreams. While I take the picks out of that pool seriously, it's still not exactly a winning strategy - and I list them in the order that I saw them die in dreams, so that means (at least it did last year) that I have to hope for incredible coincidence rather than using skill. The WDP is gone now but, if Handy is going to be restarting her pool in May as she suggested, I will probably submit my WDP team (thus far, none have died *knocks on wood*) for that, along with other things I need to fill the gap, since all my picks should be eligible by her rules. So it will remain at five. Also, to keep (sort of) on topic, I will be updated the I&P Names lists soon, now that I have a bit more free time because I'm done with one of my classes for the year (at least in terms of assignments). -

Werner Groebli has died. Frick. He was always on (albeit low) my radar, so it will be interesting (for me) to see if he gets a UK obit. He did get a quasi-Canadian one though...

If I'm not mistaken, this one (of their two hits) would not have been famous enough for the DL. Thus the DL are at an unfair disadvantage (but who cares - we are winning). Christodoulos got a BBC obit, so it would have counted. Don Wittman, however, would not have, since it didn't even qualify for the looser DDP standards. But then again, they don't list him as "dead"...
-
Looks like she gave up on that one and got a different domain name in 2007. From the video, she looks as if she'll be around for a bit yet.
-
Doesn't quite fit the bill of this thread, but I couldn't find anywhere to put him. BAFTA award-winning set designer Ron Oxley has not been heard of for some time - I suspect that he's dead but, if alive, he'd be turning 109 this year. BAFTA award means a very likely obit as well.

Happy Birthday T4H! I'll leave it at that, since I suspect that a search for "horse" and "sexy" on Google images would not be at all pleasant. -
Whom Are You Tarring With The Epithet "twunt"?
Canadian Paul replied to maryportfuncity's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Oh, I'm not bothered about being a sad W**ker. That comes naturally to me. But intellectual? Me? You are kind, MPFC, but sadly mistaken. I am but a fool compared to some of the intelligensia on here - Twelvetrees, Alphonsin, TAFKAG, Godot & Anubis to mention just five. Handy too & Monoclinic to make it 7. And CP, who has mastered Arabic which is VERY difficult to do. I am the Norman Wisdom to their Claude Levi Strauss. Thank you MPFC and OoO, but "mastered" is very far from the word I would use to describe my current Arabic skills. "Dismal" or "abysmal" would be a better choice perhaps. I can't say, though, that I'm not excited to get my Master's in a year or so so that people can refer to me as a "Master of the Middle East." Anyhow, if it comes to the point where I've made 6,000 points, I'll live with it. Just as "I don't have a girlfriend but you've probably guessed that already!" is followed by several more complementary titles, I'm sure 6,500 promises to bring more pleasant ones. -

HAPPY BIRTHDAY IE+!!! -
Well back in 2005, there were apparentely only two left: Audrey Lawson-Johnston and Barbara McDermott. According to the German Wikipedia, McDermott is still alive and will be turning 95 shortly. Similarly, it lists Lawson-Johnson is also alive at 92 years of age. Also if you don't trust Wikipedia, genarians.com lists them both as still living, and they do far superior research. CP this could be a real find. Lusitania survivors are just as important as Titanic survivors in their own way. Sadly they're not going to earn many points in the DDP except perhaps as unique picks if no-one else has noticed this. Let's keep it to ourselves. I hope that you didn't squander the opportunity Godot, as McDermott has died
-
If you can find a single news article relating to Barbara Kent in the past year (or five) then you're a better man than me, Gunga Din. Maybe, just maybe, and it's only a maybe, that's why her thread sees as much action as Stephen Hawking's cock. I see what you mean. Maybe she's already dead but we just don't know it. Possible, though she signed autographs around her 100th birthday so, if she has died, it was relatively recently (signed for free too, making it unlikely that someone's pretending to sign for her long after her death for profit)
-
Despite this probably not sounding like I think it sounds, I feel that Buzz Nutter was a miss for DDT's finely named fellows.
-
John Archibald Wheeler, whom I had on my DDP for 2 years, then took off, has died. I suspect that he'll get a UK obit of some sort for coining the term "black hole," although the last guy who died after I took him off my DDP (Fred Saberhagen) didn't. Nevertheless, he's already got an obit that's good enough for the HDP, which is where I kept him (albeit third from the bottom ). EDIT: And it's a 13th-of-the-month hit as well!
-
Yes, but first you must bring me the head of one of my currently living DDP picks... Seriously though, there's no petitioning or anything like that... all are welcome. All you have to do is send in your team in August and you're in! Maybe I'm missing something here or not understanding your request, but why would you get points last year for a contestant who died this year? EDIT: I just noticed that Wyman died on September 10, and I do remember that I originally started the competition twoish weeks into September. Is that what you're referring to? Because I can't remember if I said I would end the first competition on August 31 or the September 1X (whatever day was one day before the first one started).
