None of the above. Worked a treat last time, and there's still some 2011 left. regards. Hein

BBC news also has the story. Finally, my second DDP 2011 hit! regards, Hein

Well done, but it's not quite a coincidence: Let's have a look at mr Havel's DDP history: Year Picks Teams Percentage 1996 ? 19 1997 ? 20 1998 0 31 0.00 1999 ? 27 2000 4 33 12.12 2001 5 32 15.63 2002 9 40 22.50 2003 5 24 20.83 2004 4 43 9.30 2005 5 124 4.03 2006 5 229 2.18 2007 2 421 0.48 2008 2 463 0.43 2009 3 480 0.63 2010 2 480 0.42 2011 1 477 0.21 From this table we can glean that after a record share of 22.5 percent of all teams, mr Havel has gently slipped under the DDP radar. Considering that your team picked him for the last few years, I would expect the same would have happened should he have lived to 2012. I'm sure similar trends can be spotted for other DDP picks, but I can't be arsed to check. regards, Hein

Thanks - great find. (Welcome to Deathlist, by the way!) There have been very few articles about this Pope's health with that much detail. I expect we will see more and more of these as the media will scrutinise his health more closely the older and weaker he grows. For those who can't be bothered clicking the link above, here are some key quotes: One wonders what His Holiness had for lunch. Young virgin? regards, Hein

Today in 1987 Bernard cardinal Alfrink, former Archbisshop of Utrecht, died, aged 87. As cardinals go, he wasn't a bad bloke. regards, Hein

Certainly. Perhaps. Whatever the case may be, I did admire him for his saying what I often think but am to polite (or cowardly) to express. Mr Hitchens' demise caused me to watch, for the first time, a few videos showing him. I wasn't aware he was a member of the drinking class. It appears he managed to write without slurring. Anyway, it's a shame he's gone. Not only for us godless heathens, but also for my DDP MMXII plans. regards, Hein

I can't speak for Syd, but I haven't, not even a dead one. I've never cooked or eaten dog The recipe works fine with beef or mutton. I had the opportunity to taste dog while on holiday in Indonesia1, but I let it pass because some in my company looked rather green while we discussed the menu. I don't think it's a good idea to eat Spot, for the same reason you don't eat your pet rabbit. From that it doesn't follow that you can't eat an anonymous dog, preferably bought dead. A friend of mine, no longer with us, claimed to have eaten cat, during the Hongerwinter. 1I've eaten several interesting animals in Indonesia: sting ray, sago worm and fruit bat come to mind. regards, Hein

How about this: Chien Cantillion Ingredients: A good-sized, moderately aged dog. A poodle feeds 6 - 8. 100 grams of butter 1 tablespoon of rosemary 1 tablespoon of basil pepper salt 2 onions garlic 2 bottles of Cantillion Kriek wheat flour Cut the dog in handy chuncks. Rub the chunks with salt and pepper at will. Melt the butter in a skillet and fry the chunks of dog till golden brown. Add the Kriek and the herbs and reduce heat when the beer boils. Cut onions to rings and add to skillet. Cut garlic, as much as you like, to small pieces and add to skillet. Let simmer for 1h 30'. Use flour to thicken gravy. Serve with fried potatoes, Belgian endive and Hoegaarden Grand Cru. regards, Hein

Miss Nijmeijer is very much alive, and still playing at soldier. Dutch broadcaster NOS recentely interviewed her. Her Dutch has suffered a tad, it has a remarkable Spanish sound. Here's a clip. She says: "Als je hier in de jungle zit en je hoort continu bombardementen en je hoort continu geweren; de enige reactie die je als guerrillera hebt, is schieten", which translates to: "When you're sitting in the jungle and continuously hear bombardments and rifle fire, the only reaction for a guerrillera is to shoot." regards, Hein

Dutch cyclist Jos van der Vleuten, a sprinter active in the late 1960s and early '70s, died yesterday in his holiday home in the Dominican Republic, from a brain hemorrhage. Mr van der Vleuten was 68 years of age. I haven't found an English news source yet, but here a Dutch one, and here a French one. regards, Hein
