    Last Minute Cuts

Here are a few of the candidates I dismissed, mostly because I couldn't find much health-related news on them: Mikhail Gorbachev Simon van der Meer Vasily Smyslov Friðrik Ólafsson regards, Hein

    Zelda Rubinstein

Perhaps Mrs Rubinstein can do something similar? BTW, if indeed all news winds down to the same source, there may well be something fishy about this story. I'm glad I didn't put her on any of my teams. regards, Hein

    John Demjanjuk

There are not many people left from that time who are not old or sick. As far as I know, illness or being old are, from themselves, no reasons to not put someone on trial. If the crime is trivial, these may well be good reasons, but we're discussing a suspect of mass murder and war crimes. By international legal rules, war crimes have no statute of limitation. That's true for all suspects. Ah, you touch a good point there. It doesn't seem likely Vietnam will cause much activity in this respect. Iraq and Afghanistan may prove to be different, although I doubt it. The scale of those wars is different and there are no clear winners and losers, as was the case in WWII. All that said: I sympathise with your sentiments. It's all rather pathetic. On the other hand: I sympathise more with the relatives of the victims of those suspected of these horrible crimes. I hate the thought of them getting away with it, if they're guilty. regards, Hein

    Anna Wing

It's nice to see Anna Wing return on the list, after all these years. She seems to be our female Clive Dunn. If I understand her Wikipedia entry correctly[1], there's little reason to expect her demise soon, though. Ok, she'll turn 96 this year and she got an MBE last year, which has a bit of the kiss of death nature, but she seems in good health otherwise. [1] and if we are to trust that online encyclopedia, of course. regards, Hein

    The 13th Death Of '09

Seconded. I'm always wrong in these polls, so we'll score at least 13 hits this year. Damn, it seems I was right this time. As were HCW and Josco. Congratulations seem to be not in order. regards, Hein

    Pope Benedict XVI

The idea that Christ (and therefore, according to Christian orthodoxy, the Christian god) is like Christians is very disturbing indeed. regards, Hein

    Read Any Good Books Lately?

But we didn't have a Caroline Taggart at my school... All the more reason to read the book, I'd say. BTW, my school only had a Caroline Visser. I won't say what she taught me, for legal reasons, but I assure you it was worth learning. regards, Hein

    Pete Doherty

Perhaps it's just his "Who nobody will miss"[1] value that does it. If I remember what kind of musicians[2] I liked at that age, I can only say that kids that age know everything they think they need to know. Old farts like us know better, but what do we know? [1] I have a little list [2] Musician as in: earns money by selling recorded noise. regards, Hein
