I wouldn't exactly put it like that, I prefer: you don't have to be mad to play chess, but it helps. Well, there's at least something wrong with each and every grandmaster, but to call them totally unstable is stretching it a bit. That said, some of the greatest (like Steinitz, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine, Fischer) showed some very weird behaviour. Yup. regards, Hein (very unstable)

    General Pinochet

Ah yes, that totally unsingable translation by Henriette Roland Holst. One must skip a third of the syllables to sing it to the notes. Many years ago I got into a fight with a few members of a choir, who were singing Christian hymns at Rotterdam Central Station. They didn't appreciate my joining in with The Internationale. When asked to stop, I changed to Gimn Sovetskovo Soyuza and they became violent. So much for The Other Cheek. regards, Hein

    Not Exactly Famous...

I call your 5.25 inch floppy and raise you an 8 inch one as the first one I used. The medium I first used for digital storage was a cassette tape, of course. BTW, according to my sources Mr Shugart didn't invent the floppy disk, but one of his workers, David Noble, did. See Wikipedia on floppy disks, if you're inclined to believe that source. Anyway, an important computer man has died. regards, Hein

    The Bible

It's a Good Thing you don't claim that the bible is God's word. If you did it would, combined with the above, be a strong argument against both God and the bible. The Bible is God's word [...] According to the Bible God does change his word. Two examples: Genesis 7:17: And the flood was forty days upon the earth. vs. Genesis 7:24: And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. Malachi 3:6: For I am the Lord, I change not. vs. Genesis 6:6: And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. regards, Hein

    The Bible

It's a Good Thing you don't claim that the bible is God's word. If you did it would, combined with the above, be a strong argument against both God and the bible. My main objection to Xianity is its claim that it's based on the Bible. My main objection to the Bible is what is says. That the Bible condones slavery is far from the worst bit. regards, Hein

I did that. Less than a month ago I deleted dozens of members who never posted and hadn't been active for more than two years. Now that you've posted it won't happen again. regards, Hein

What were the people in Santiago celebrating? The death of Pinochet, or the fact that Deathlist got it's 11th sucess? I can't speak for the people in Santiago, but I am both. regards, Hein

Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice! The bastard is dead! I congratulate the Chilean nation. Party time! And he's given us our 11th hit. And my 7th DDP hit (and second in a week). I'll drink to his demise! Unfortunately I left him off my HDP team. And he died while I was watching the footy on the box. Anyway, time. regards, Hein

Now that Friendman carked it there are only 40 candidates left. Or will the haul stop with him? Voted Waldheim, for no particular reason. regards, Hein

Let me add a few thoughts to the discussion. With regards to being eligible for a death list I see no qualitative difference between picking a 16 year old girl or a 91 year old man. If one is morally reprehensible, so is the other. If there's a difference, it's one of scale. I appreciate the tragedy of a dying child. Thanks to progress in medicine it's a rare occasion in the West nowadays, but that makes it just more of a tragedy. That said, most dying children do so without the media attention Ms Grove gets. The article to which themaninblack pointed doesn't make it clear why she does. If I read this Daily Mail article correctly she is herself partly responsible for it: I'm not sure those nurses did the Right Thing, but Ms Grove is in no obligation to accept an award and could have chosen to do her thing in anonymity. As Cowboy Ronnie already remarked she's ineligible for DL, the Unwritten Rules explicitly exclude anyone Famous for Dying. She'll get the DDP nod, though. I'm far from sure I'll pick her. She's not certain to die in 2007 but she'll score big if she does. Picking her does leave more than a whiff of bad taste, though. As far as I'm concerned that's not because of her age or her disease, but because of the way she got her media attention. regards, Hein

Those housekeeping tasks (like taking out the rubbish) can be done by anyone who can recognise spam and click a mouse. Preventive measures may need a bit of technical knowledge of how the WWW works, but not much. regards, Hein

Unfortunately they're running their forum with different software than ours, but I may be able to give a few hints and tips on how to make life bearable. We have no lack of spam and spammers here, but thanks to very active policing by our Most Esteemed Mods and some preemptive measures by technical staff our members rarely notice. regards, Hein
