Today in 1929 gambler, deputy sheriff in Pima County, Arizona, deputy town marshal in Tombstone, Arizona, and survivor of the 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Wyatt Earp, died from a bladder infection, aged 80 and presumably with his boots off.

Hmm, atheist theology, I don't think there's much employment there.

Oh, good evening, Miss Elk.

is she a metalist or just a hard-rocker?? Metal, I'd guess. Lemmie's death must've shocked her.

He'll do what he's told.

Unacceptable indeed. I had completely forggotten about that flick. There´s no need to remind us.

It's the Dutch name of the Grim Reaper. The 'Magere' bit means skinny. 'Hein' is a name related to Hendrik, Henrik, Henk, Henri, Heinz, Henry and Enrico.

I think you meant AND rather than BUT. No she means but. I do indeed. I wish I had read my message once more before I hit the Post button. I'm a he BTW. I did look at it, and I'm not sure what the complaint is, so I'll do this helpdesk style. Please have a look at the profile of member Graeme Hine. There's a profile photo there that is wider than high. Is your complaint that you cannot upload such a picture, or something else, sir?

Eh?

I've been told his son Mike now does that.

I have no idea. I'll have a look at it later (which is a polite way of saying: "I can't be arsed now."), but I don't promise results.

The French language version of Slate, slate.fr, has an article about DL: Deathlist, le site cynique qui essaie de prédire la mort des célébrités. Apparently we're cynics.

So the pitch is flooded and frozen? The Dutch would start skating on it.

Germany did, Nevertheless I voted Pratchett, 'cause I'll miss him most.

Cruijff is the correct spelling. The spelling Cruyff is, well what? This is a subject about which the Dutch only speak in whispers and hints, preferably with no ignorant foreigners around. Primary schools and children´s books teach that Dutch is written in an alphabet of 26 letters: [a-x], [ij], [z]. This is doctrine, dissident thoughts amount to treason. Dutch orthography uses [a-x], [ij], [y], [z], a total of 27 letters. Y is only used in loanwords, with two different pronunciations, similar to English yoghurt and system, although y in Dutch systeem is pronounced like ee in English deep. In ordinary Dutch words those sounds are written j for the consonant and ie for the vowel. In standard Dutch the digraph ij represents a diphthong (ɛi in IPA), not used in English, and which some Dutch dialects, mine including, pronounce as English eye, others use ee like in English deep. This latter pronunciation was standard into the 18th century and written as ij and y indiscriminately until standardisation of Dutch spelling in the 19th century. Anyway, the Dutch are in denial about that 27th letter and won't let ignorant foreigners in on their secrets. A clever ploy has been to change ij to y and hope nobody takes notice. It only matters in proper names (my beloved Feyenoord is named after the Rotterdam neighbourhood Feijenoord, itself named after a former island with yet another spelling, Fijenoord); no ignorant foreigner reads Dutch anyway. The string of vowels in Cruijff is pronounced œy (in IPA), a sound that Scots (and French) can do, but English, Merkins and Strayans can't and most often pronounce his name rhyming with strife. The r is supposed to be rolled, but is often realised as a short ch as in Scottish loch. In modern Dutch his name would be spelled Kruif. The c and ij in Cruijff are an earlier spelling, fossilised by laws introducing and governing a civil registry and family names and their inheritance during the French occupation in 1811.

Topic split from "Time Added". Cruijff's son Jordi reports that Johan is "doing very well". He gave no details on treatment of Cruijff's cancer, but stated: "I can tell that we heard reasonbably good news recvently." I'd prefer solid medical evidence, but I think I did the right thing to leave Cruijff out of my teams.

Anyone else hear George Orwell turning in his grave? [T]he original (turgid, as I remember it, reading it for my Englist Lit) writing of Orwell. I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one who doesn't like the book. I bought it second hand, started reading it and abandonded the read well before page 96. BTW, Orwell's Animal Farm sucks as well. I suppose he had great ideas, but wasn't a good wordsmith.

Already reports are coming in from eye witnesses that he did not shout the usual "Allah" whatever. Maybe it'll turn out his "fake suicide vest" was in fact his iPod and headphones wires. Whilst I appreciate these are dangerous times, this is what happens when you arm your police routinely. No questions, no attempt to remonstrate and calm, just shoot the feckers and deal with the consequences later. Indeed I've often wondered how many criminals, especially in the US but also elsewhere, involved in mass shootings or the like have in fact not committed suicide as is reported but have simply been executed by the cops. Varying reports coming in CNN has him wielding a cleaver, shouting "Allahu Akbar" and holding a piece of paper with the ISIS flag on it. The ones I've seen in the US, vary depending on their motive. It could be a case of society has been ignoring me, so I'm going to do something that people will remember me by. So they get a gun or number of guns and head off to some large public building. It's usually about 50% of those that choose the suicide by cop method as opposed to taking their own life. He could also have been plain stupid. -

Aaahh... even in intensive care. Aha! Bummer. He took a fall in the bathroom, it says, and he received a skull injury, but the report adds: "He was admitted to the intesive care unit, but according to a spokeswoman his injuries aren't serious an Zorreguieta was in no danger. He'll return to his holiday address in Villa La Angostura wednesday, where king Willem-Alexander and queen Máxima have a holiday every other year." I sacked him from my DDP team, so I hope he´ll live another year.
