The Fringes Of Fame/family Of The Famous

The BBC report mentions that Ron is now disabled. (Not through the shooting but was already disabled). So losing a wife and son can't help any. -

Edited and put Lavery in. However, Mick Nagy (b. 1929) died as long ago as 1970, so he's been removed. -
And this is the thing with ex footballers and racing drivers. Sometimes the announcement never comes and you find out the hard way they've gone. I recently discovered a F1 racing car designer died 7 years ago and no one announced it. Sad news about Bob VK. Think he was the last survivor of the 54 team.

SC, you make very good points actually. With Lavery, I'm going on intuition but who would've thought Simpson was still alive. I think I'll take your advice and put him in some kind of symbol to denote thst he probably is dead but can't be sure. -

Due to this news - https://www.dundalkfc.com/paddy-durkan-r-i-p/, this rules out the below still being alive. (There was a tentative 2008 death date for him anyway) John Lavery 24/11/1919 Bradford City, halifax, Dundalk -

One of the aims of this list was that early on when U95 put the original list together, there was surprise that such a large age gap could exist between Smith and the next contender. I'm pleased that, already, we have someone who wasn't on any of the official lists now in 2nd place. And who knows, he may not be 2nd, there may yet be others to be found. -
Got to agree with this. Pretty much excellent in any role I ever saw her in.

Nuttall died as long ago as 1963 - http://hugmansfootballers.com/player/14751 A more recent death is Reading's Len Vallard who died on the 12th September - https://www.readingfcformerplayers.co.uk/news/152/Len_Vallard

In the final stages of the oldest football league players search. Two who are alive - both in care homes - have had articles about them lately: Jack Butchart - Dundee United - https://balhousiecare.co.uk/news/dundee-uniteds-oldest-living-player-and-the-clubs-youngest-ever-player-meet-for-96th-birthday-treat/ Frank O'Farrell - West Ham - https://kumb.com/story.php?id=133874

Lady Susie has thanked well wishers for the messages etc to SCM. In other words Sir SCM is not well enough to make a statement himself. This is a report on both the Daily Mail and iol. Za on his health but I wonder if there is more to it than this. https://www.iol.co.za/motoring/f1-grand-prix/racing-legend-sir-stirling-moss-fighting-on-as-he-turns-90-33120989

Also mentioned in The Chequered Flag thread as a possibility by me three years ago as for me, his most important role was that of racing car designer. He certainly was a remarkable man. -
Research for the oldest footballers is going well. Just checking off the names now. One definitely alive is Roy Killin, but he has bladder cancer. https://oshawaexpress.ca/a-life-worthy-of-reflection/

Having not seen Jason Connery since the 1980's, I'm more shocked by his appearance than his father's.
-
Progress recently has been made on the oldest footballers again - 19 clubs to go before people are rechecked again via three sources but I have found this nugget - https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/huddersfield-town-players-now-16413265 which rules out Graham Bailey as living (22/3/20) but confirms Albert Bateman 13/6/1924 as still alive.

Jose Luis Brown, scorer of one of the goals in the 1986 World Cup final for Argentina has died. He was only 62 and suffered with dementia. A regular header of the ball too... https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/797939/breaking-jose-luis-brown-dead-diego-maradona-argentina-world-cup-1986/amp

I think the Ryder Cup Gordon Brand is different. He was English, this guy Scottish. Could be wrong tho. -
Drivers who are poorly or have an illness of some sort: Bondurant, Campbell - Jones (dementia or similar age related issues) Ashmore, von Rooyen (cancer) Tambay, Laffite, W Fittipaldi (Parkinson's) Cabral and Edwards have age-related issues. I'm sure there is a few more but I can't remember currently. Obit chances of the non-Parkinson's trio? Probably only Bondurant, maybe.

We don't see Murray as much as we used to. He wasn't at Goodwood or Silverstone this year whereas he would normally make at least one event. But he Is still out and about and travelling fair distances from his home https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/opinion/f1/murray-walker-royal-automobile-club-talk-show I would hope he's got a good few years yet but is getting noticeably frailer (albeit doing okay as he is nearly 96)

Of course, SCM is as strong as an ox as proved by surviving numerous scrapes in times of yore, but unfortunately he does need to stay on the list I think.
-
Msc, It's the same illness for SCM that ruled him out of public life. Sadly he is too poorly at the moment. I can't say too much more than that out of respect.
-
Well to be totally honest, I was doing very well until May when I was commissioned to write a motor racing book. So it's come to a bit of a standstill but I still intend to complete it (oldest footballers) this year.

Just to say that apart from the aforementioned Sammy Chapman, one other 2019 non-playing squad member death is that of 1954 Swiss player Ivo Frosio back in April. Also found out Franz Swoboda of Austria died in 2017. Totals are IIRC 8 living from 1950 39 from 1954 77 from 1958
