Suspect you're thinking of Andrea de Cesaris. Elio de Angelis, generally, was a careful, smooth and fast driver - Andrea, bar 1991, none of the three.

Another 1950 non-playing "survivor", Manuel Machuca of Chile, died in 1985, 29 years ago now, aged 61 - he didn't even get to see the Maradona Hand of God, let alone the 2014 tournament. I've updated his English Wikipedia page. Suspect more Spanish-speaking players will be removed accordingly soon.

Well as Mandela didn't even make the starting line and Crowe got me points, I don't regret this, although I KNEW she'd died the year I dropped her off my DDP team for the first time in aeons. Ah well. RIP Dora, always enjoyable to watch.

I'm going through the lists as I'm not at all convinced a lot on there are still alive - but I'd like to find something to prove it. One of the non-players in 1950 mentioned, Ervin Katnic, actually died aged 58, in 1979. http://nogomet.lzmk.hr/clanak.aspx?id=1017 If I was to trust my instincts and remove who I think is more than likely dead, then the totals will be quite different, signifcantly lower me thinks.

That's right, but he also wrote biographies of Jim Clark, Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren - the latter two he he actually worked for. But the most likely link to an obit is his work with James Hunt in Against All Odds, Hunt's version of his 1976 title winning season. That said, he's a well known name but in a niche field, so there's no guarantee of obit.

Eoin Young, 75, esteemed motor racing journalist, is very poorly right now, after years of ill health, and in truth, hard living. There's every chance that he won't see 2015, or possibly not even August, but if he does make January, regrettably, I can't see him being alive for much longer. Would he obit? Well, he's from New Zealand which won't help from that respect, but he's written many books on the subject and may just get something - certainly more than Bamber, who was really only identified with one magazine, will.

Blackie, Thank you for taking over at much shorter notice than you are giving your sucessor. I was sorry to give it up, but circumstances went against me to have the time to diedicate to it and keep it going, and circumstances will still stop me from running it again. I hope you've enjoyed it. I've always felt that I kept it going so that it still existed, but I didn't really advance anything with the site using a "it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. I like the fact that you've advanced it in so many years - the Theme Team league, the Drop 40 and also if you go into previous years, you can see who is still alive and dead from those lists - I like that. I know - in fact apart from you, I'm the only person on DL who does know, as much as it's good fun and interesting, what an absolute pain in the arse it is at times- and yes, people do constantly email "is this an obit?" "did you know this person is dead (someone obvious like Mandela)" and so on, similiar to what Predictor keeps mentioning, minor quibbles in the scheme of things. You deserve the rest. I knew Blackie was stopping last year, and that's part of the reason I announced my retirement early, rather than towards the end of the year or at the start of 2015. I didn't want it to look like I'd only do it if Blackie ran it and I didn't want to look like I wasn't supporting the new host - as mentioned before, I very nearly didn't enter a team for this year (Wags will say I still haven't...) Whoever takes it on - it's long, it's tiring - Christmas and New Year will have to be cancelled.... but overall, it's immense fun and very rewarding. I wish all potential candidates well. Please, even though I'm not entering any more.. keep it free.

Guy Edwards, father of Sean, who was killed in a crash last year, is in poor health. He has suffered a stroke (last year or so, before Sean's death) and now requires full-time care. Like Leo Kinnunen, who is in a similiar situation, he's no longer physically well, but mentally okay. Edwards is 71. Two recent deaths not posted on here thus far were 1950's one-time GP driver and engineer, Paul England, and the former Lancia F1 team manager Gianni Lancia, son of Vincenzo Lancia, the founder of the company, has died aged 90.

I doubt, as I always did, that he will get the relevant obit - a well known and popular name but in a relatively small field. But he had many friends in the media, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he will get a broadsheet mention. Dying on a GP weekend may help. He certainly lasted longer than I thought he would as he was SO ill towards the end of last year. RIP Jim.

Colombia are doing well in this World Cup and I'm sure some of their living veterans are enjoying a run of good form at last. But Antonio Rada, one of Colombia's goalscorers in the 1962 World Cup won't be, as he died at the start of the month before the World Cup began. http://www.futbolred.com/mundial-brasil-2014/noticias/previomundial2014/mundial-brasil-murio-antonio-rada-heroe-del-empate-con-rusia-en-el-mundial-del-62/14063355

Cheers OoO, and whilst we're on the subject of venerable speed merchants, how's the irrepressable Norman Dewis? Incredibly well. Just flown to the US again and looked very well last time I saw him in March.

Hot Tip: Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first female F1 driver is, according to sources, "not at all well". No link, you will have to take insider knowledge for whatever it is worth and whatever "not well" specifically means

Another North American 1960's racer, Tony Settember, has died aged 87. Settember competed in 6 GP's, but was better known for being the man behind the Scirocco F1 car and was a very good driver in sportscars - http://www.oldracingcars.com/driver/Tony_Settember

People I Was Surprised To Find Are Still Alive

He's not any more - he's died - aged 91. http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2014/05/02/20105/variety_era_comic_eli_woods_dies -
Clive Clark, former DDP pick for my theme team, but better known for his many years a profilic goalscorer for his position, a winger, for West Brom, has died after a long, long illness, aged 73. http://www.birmingha...wn-pays-7062282

Edited 1954 & 1958 for Boskov's death and added Jardine (thanks Charon) to the 1978 early losses. I say early, but it's 36 years ago now... I forgot Jardine was there in 1978 - he's the 3rd of the 1974 team after Holton and Bremner to die.

A BBC report into dementia in footballers (alive or deceased) mentioned that Norwich City legend Duncan Forbes is now in a care home with dementia - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-26817099. He'll definitely obit, he was a colossus for the Canaries for aeons.

Very, very sad news. Poor Clive (Dan's dad) has had a miserable few years.

1958 Hungarian squad member and 1962 player;FW.....Tivadar Monostori.........(1936-08-24) is dead. PS Roger Bocquet (Swiss '50) died 20 years ago, Charles Casali (Swiss '54) died earlier this year. Both have been taken off the list. http://www.rotweiss.ch/bocquet-roger/

Thanks guys. Banshees, well, you know, that's the thing isn't it, I could! But no, I'm true to my word. Of course it only takes 5 minutes to think of 20 pretty old or ill people from the top of my head, but if you're going to do something well, do it properly. TMIB, that's true, if DDP is stil going in about 10 years, then yep, I'll probably chip in. But I need to let other people experience mid-table mediocrity now....

Doubt it, as Romania weren't there in 1974. Didn't play either in 1970, squad player, I'm afraid.
