I wonder how many England Players who played under Walter Winterbottom are left. Bryan Douglas and Colin McDonald from 1958 squad with Alan Peacock and George Eastham from the 1962 squad but surely they are others who didn’t go to a tournament.

Just 7 additional but note Eastham never played for Winterbottom. He made his debut for Ramsey in May 1963.

    Blunstone

    McGuiness

    Holliday

    McNeil

    Crawford

    O'Grady

Sad news about Tommy Banks. Last England International who was born in the 1920's. Colin McDonald takes over the poisoned chalice now.

I wrote to the EFL two years ago about Graham. Asking if they could confirm if he's the oldest living player, and if he is, could they do something to mark that. I never had a reply, sadly.

I spoke with Graham last week and we spoke about his old teams, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United. He's still very interested in following their fortunes on TV.

EFL are f*****g useless at everything so its in line for them not to reply.

But fabulous hes doing well, thank you.

  3. I'm very close to completing 1933 and 1934 births onto the main list

On Wikipedia - Christy Fletcher Wiki, is listed as being 90 years of age.

Sadly, not, he died as long ago as 50 years ago in Scotland; where he moved to play football after his spell at Brentford; dying at just 40 years of age.

I do wonder if some of those on the list have died so long ago, it's no longer easy to find records on them.

Surname Forename Age at death Mother's Maiden Name Gender Year Ref RD Name

@Octopus of Odstock, had a bit of spare time tonight so did the names on your Jimmy Stewart list who are over 85. Only found one death – Jacques Roux, in 2006. The five four in gold I can't be sure if they're alive or not – though I'm sure msc will know about Evans. All the rest are still with us!

Jackie Russell – Not sure, can't trace her despite me having her father's birth name/dates from IMDb. Still living I imagine. Maybe born c. 1936 if she graduated from high school in 1954?

    Finally solved this one!

After going on newspapers.com, it features a casting director called Ralph Winters. It mentions his wife, Jackie Russell and two children. It mentions that they live in Hollywood. After searching, Ancestry, a Ralph H Winters married a much younger Jacqueline Ruth Russell in 1958

    So her birthdate is:

    Name Jacqueline Ruth Russell
    Gender Female
    Marriage Age 22
    Affidavit or License Age 22
    Birth Date 4 Jul 1936
    Marriage Date abt 1958
Affidavit or License Date 21 Feb 1959
    License Place Maricopa, Arizona, USA
    Spouse Ralph Harold Winters
    Description Marriage Affidavits 1959

Is she still alive? It appears so:

    Name

    Jacqueline Ruth Russell
    [J R Russell]
    [Jacqueline R Smith]

    Birth

    Jul 1936

    Residence

    2017-2020 Alvin, Texas, USA

  5. Occasionally, a player presumed dead, largely due to zero information, or too common a name, is actually found to be alive.. or was in this case.

Allen Oliver Wiki, born 1924 was presumed dead because of a post by Gateshead's historian that such and such (someone younger, can't remember who) was now the oldest. But actually, up until April, he was still alive. - considering the lack of people at his funeral, this might have slipped the net.

The full article is here - https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/stockport-county-anti-wrexham-barcelona-3026246 - but the key bit is this:

    Quote

An email from a nursing home in Newcastle alerted Stockport to the presence of their oldest surviving player Alan Oliver, who appeared 151 times for the club in the 1950s. He was 99. Stockport were one of eight of Oliver’s former teams contacted by the home.

Bellis was touched and pledged to visit Newcastle at the season’s end to present Oliver with a cap, maintaining the tradition of honouring every player who has played 100 games. He also promised to bring along the League Two trophy should they win it.

Oliver was said to be overwhelmed by the response. Sadly, on the weekend Stockport sealed the title, Oliver passed away. His funeral took place last Monday two days after the official presentation of the trophy.

Bellis made it his business to attend the service in the North-East with a fellow member of staff. “None of the other clubs responded to the initial email, and there were only eight people at the funeral, including us,” Bellis tells i.

“The family asked if we would go back to their home in Hexham, which of course we did. We chatted and gave them the memorabilia that we had promised Alan. They couldn’t believe we had made the trip on behalf of the club.

“It is those little things that we can do that Mark [Stott, owner] wants us to continue with. I have free rein to protect the club’s DNA. It is a privilege to do it and I’ve told Mark this, the minute I think we are going off in corporate direction and losing touch with that, I’m off. Count me out.”

  6. Not complaining, merely an observation.... Nature's Way, currently on top of the DDP theme team, doesn't look like a complete theme team to me. Field, Burrow, Whale, Roche, Brooks etc. I get, but Newhart and Rantzen?

There’s a source on his page that gives 24th as a date.

Amusingly on Google there’s an article from 10 years ago that describes him as one of the worst F1 drivers ever. Thoughts?

I don't think that source is right to be honest. Waiting for next Ryerson update tomorrow and then if nothing in there, it might trickle through.

To be honest, Walker suffered from "Lotus 2nd driver syndrome". Look at Taylor, Spence, Arundell, Miles, Oliver, even Graham Hill to a degree. All pretty much given inferior equipment to Clark, Rindt and Fittipaldi, despite Chapman's protests they were in equal machinery.

But not scoring a point in one of the quickest and most iconic cars of all time still doesn't look good. He was quite brilliant at Formula 3 level, but maybe Formula 1 - especially in one of the top seats - was a step too much.

Anyone racing related becoming a nightmare over on Wikipedia now. It seems a lot of these old racing sites that used to put up obits of sorts have closed down or simply stopped getting updated. All these announcements come through Facebook now, which is less than ideal given that Wikipedia is getting even stricter as of recent with regards to sourcing from social media (which in this day and age is not practical for the reason I've just outlined).

    Rick France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_France
    Blackie Wangerin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackie_Wangerin
    Vic White https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_White

    David Walker https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Walker_(racing_driver)

If anyone find proper obits/death or funeral notices for any of the above, please post them on here or DM me with them.

Oldracingcars.com still updates for some drivers but it's often been queried if it's a genuine source. It's basically the racing Hugmans so it should be okay.

That said Walker is not updated on there yet.

  9. Former Lotus Grand Prix driver Dave Walker died last week. Trying to get more information. Not entirely sure if a full obit will come but will keep an eye out for local news/Ryerson.

  10. A 1934 birth. not on Wikipedia, but he is on Hugman's.

Keith Turner, instead of being 90 this year, ex-Nottingham Forest actually died as long ago as 1967, aged just 32! Definitely the same man as on the Ancestry tree, there's a picture of him in his Forest gear. Died of coronary thrombosis and a myocardial infarction.

Rip.ie is a phenomenally useful website for things like this. I was able to find someone with the same name who died around the sane date. The thing is, I'm pretty sure it's not the same person and the article mentions a woman with a different name as his wife. I think both are still alive

They lived in Sherborne, Dorset so probably wont be on rip.ie. Phelans own website lists him as alive.
