  1. You know, only 2 days ago, I was thinking "When Graham Bailey dies, who is definitely the oldest surviving player"? I'm doubtful any of those on the list between Bailey and Watling are actually alive and at some point, I'll have to bite the bullet and declare them "presumed dead".

Watling was a good person to have as the oldest, especially considering his wartime experiences, but alas. RIP Josser.

Joe Lancaster (born 28th April 1926) is definitely still alive.

Mike Kelly, Eddie Martin, Eric Hampson, Herbert Robinson, Frank Winters, Syd Ward, John Taylor, Ambrose Wilson, James Kelly, Ted Harding, Bill Mellor, Bill Parker, Eryk Kubicki and Joe Houston are all between Graham Bailey and Lancaster but I doubt any of them are still alive. That said, I'll keep looking for that golden nugget which would officially rule them out.

Heard on the grapevine that FB is reporting Marcus Plantin, TV producer/director responsible for many shows from Top Of The Pops, The Generation Game, Blankety Blank, Live From Her Majesty's etc etc has died.

    Anyone able to confirm?

His son is the one who has posted it on FB, so looks legit. I'm sure a broadsheet obit will follow given him fame in the 1990's.

There is also a listing for a Douglas Cameron. Surely they don't mean Douglas Cameron MBE (wiki), the legendary broadcaster?

Far too many off radar deaths this time round. Sad that a lot won't receive write ups.

McCallum got a notice earlier this year, but the article is written in a way that only mentions his death at the end, rather than "former EastEnders actor dies"

Further documentary filmmaker, producer and director famous for Whicker's World and then the shed load of travel documentaries filmed with Michael Palin, Roger Mills Guardian Obituary: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/may/18/roger-mills-obituary

Also an executive producer on 40 Minutes and the special Sailor (the 1976 documentary famous for embedding Rod Stewart's Sailing in our heads that year).

Great shame. First Terry Jones, then Palins wife Helen and now Roger Mills, the Palin 'team' is slowly being picked off.

Here is a list I made of surviving cast members of A New Hope, I will expand it further whenever I will have time for that (unlike George Lucas, I will not do it only for some quick grab...)

    06/04/1947 John Ratzenberger

Ratzenberger and George Wendt reunite again, both looking their age.

  7. Where's the proof it's a private ambulance? Looks like a normal tradesman van to me.

How reliable is this Merritt guy as he seems to be the source for the 'gravely ill' quotes.

First player to play in 5 World Cups and the last survivor of 1950, a true World Cup legend even though he actually conceded a lot of goals.

Sad news, but 93 is a fine age to get to.

  9. Two recent deaths, both had some degree of notability in their particular discipline:

Long-time sportscar driver, a Le Mans specialist, George Fouche, died after complications of a fall. He was only 57.

     http://www.autonewsinfo.com/2023/05/05/deces-de-george-fouche-429277.html

Took a class win at Le Mans and one-time test driver for Jordan's F1 team, but he nearly perished in 1987 for had his connecting flight arrived on time, he would've been on the ill-fated (South African Airways) Flight 295 which crashed, killing all 159 people on board including wrestler Kazuharu Sonoda. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazuharu_Sonoda

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Gagliardi, who raced in European Formula 2 and 3, also took a class win at Le Mans and very nearly raced in Formula 1 for Frank Williams (in the days before Williams struck gold), died 1st May in Varese - https://www.varesenews.it/2023/05/addio-a-giancarlo-gagliardi-pilota-e-imprenditore/1603544/

  10. There's plenty of photos of the Duke in the Abbey, he was only second row back so quite prominent. Seems no worse. If anything, he was able to take more of a role in this one than the Queen's Funeral, but he still looks ghastly.

Ok thanks I was misleading : I saw his name on the last 1966 update, so I thought his death had not been posted yet. I actually erase his name on the list.

By the way, shall I erase Nelson Lopez (the Argentinian) from 1966 list ?

Whoismakoto had found a post suggested that he is dead, but with no sources

Fwiw, I've removed Lopez from my list. It was only when cross referencing the list above that I realised Maszoly was already removed which led me back to Youngwillz post.

I remember when he was doing something like Pole to Pole or Sahara, that there was a medical issue with his wife but she convinced him to continue filming. It's actually in one of the behind the scenes documentary. I have most of his books so could probably find it written in there as well.

I know when away he would speak to her nearly every day.

Brain tumour. But she didn't tell him until after the surgery as she didn't want to come back and fret and to continue filming. When he knew he was in the remotest South East Asian village and it took him ages to get back.

So it must've been Full Circle about 25 years ago.

Anyone reading anything into him retiring as a pundit with only six games of the season left? Seems odd to step down now rather than just hold on for a month...

Cheaper holidays now than six weeks innit?

player from the 1990’s who won the European cup has Brain damage. Only one English team won that in the 1990’s and that was Man United in 1999. Through most of those have more than several caps and have all been in the media recently appearing healthy.

Probably Gordon Cowans. Has dementia, won the European Cup in 1982, played in the 1990's and had several games for England.

If not him, then you're looking at one of the players from the early 1980s that had a long career into the 1990's.
